Six Crises in Search of an Author

Tom Engelhardt details the neocon agenda: "The post-9/11 strike at Afghanistan was never simply a strike at al-Qaeda (or the Taliban who hosted them). It was always a prelude to war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq. And the invasion of Iraq was never meant to end in Baghdad (as indicated in the neocon pre-war quip: 'Everyone wants to go to Baghdad. Real men want to go to Tehran.'). Nor was Tehran to be the end of the line."

Sweet Little Lies

Paul Krugman outlines the right-wing deception strategy and the media's complicity with it: "Before 9/11, the right-wing noise machine mainly relied on little lies. And now it has returned to its roots."

The Myth of the Risky Sub-Prime Borrower

Griffith says, "Sub-prime lending is just the latest example of how lenders have tarred entire segments of the population as credit-unworthy through the mortgage industry's own discriminatory, irresponsible - and now reckless - behavior."

'Isolated' Attorney General Crams for Hearings

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has virtually wiped his public schedule clean to bone up for his long-awaited April 17 testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee - a session widely seen as a crucial test as to whether he will survive the US attorney mess. But even his own closest advisers are nervous about whether he is up to the task.

US Prisons in Iraq Are Breeding Ground for Extremists

US-run detention camps in Iraq have become a breeding ground for extremists, where Islamic militants recruit and train supporters. Prisons have long served as an incubator for radicals, and mass roundups by the US military after the 2003 invasion are now blamed for antagonizing Iraq's Sunni Arab population and feeding the insurgency.

Bush/Cheney Still Lie With Abandon

American Tortured in Iraq Sues Rumsfeld

Donald Vance was falsely accused by the US military of aiding terrorists. He was held without charge for more than three months in a high-security prison in Iraq, and subjected to psychological torture day and night without legal counsel or even a phone call to his family. On Wednesday, the former private security contractor was honored for his ordeal and for speaking out against the incident. In Washington, Vance received the Ridenhour Prize for Truth-Telling, an award named in memory of Army helicopter gunner Ron Ridenhour, who struggled to bring the horrific mass murders at My Lai to the attention of Congress and the Pentagon during the Vietnam War.

Destruction of Boreal linked to Climate Change

Failure to change logging practices and protect Ontario's intact Boreal Forest will dangerously accelerate climate change according to our new report, "Robbing the Carbon Bank". The report exposes the impacts of logging Ontario's intact Boreal Forest on global warming and is expected to increase pressure on the Ontario government to deliver on its promise of protecting the Boreal. It's critical they set aside key areas of Boreal Forest as both carbon storehouses as well as habitat of critical declining species such as caribou.

Sierra Chainsaw Massacre

We're exposing the scary truth taking place every day in the Sierra Nevada forests. Sierra Pacific Industries (SPI), the largest private landowner in the Sierra Nevada--and the single greatest destroyer of its forests--has clearcut hundreds of thousands of acres of both public and private land, and they have plans to clearcut over a million more. There are more sustainable ways to log, but SPI persists in its destructive ways. But you can help! Join us in April on Friday the 13th for a Day of Action to stop the "Sierra Chainsaw Massacre." WAR EVERY DAY (EIRAQ BLOG)
Soldiers with Mental Health Problems Shipped to Iraq

Columbus, Georgia's Fort Benning is notorious for its involvement in training foreign soldiers, most notably some of the worst human rights offenders in the Latin America of the 80's and 90's. Today Fort Benning is in the news for a different kind of game: commanders at Fort Benning are reportedly ordering soldiers suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress disorder back to Iraq. From training foreign soldiers to torture to forcing tortured soldiers back into a war in a foreign land. It's a disgraceful legacy.

Out How? Juan Cole on Withdrawing from Iraq

Juan Cole has an interesting article in the Nation this week. In "How to Get Out of Iraq," he argues that "Bush is profoundly in error to think that continued US military occupation can forestall further warfare. Sunni Arabs perceive the Americans to have tortured them, destroyed several of their cities and to be keeping them under siege at the behest of the joint Shiite-Kurdish government of Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki. American missteps have steadily driven more and more Sunnis to violence and the support of violence. The Pentagon's own polling shows that between 2003 and 2006 the percentage of Sunni Arabs who thought attacking US troops was legitimate grew from 14 to more than 70."

Poof! That’s the American dream of homeownership vanishing for those unable to pay their mortgages — leading one major mortgage lender to declare bankruptcy this week. Perhaps Americans need to rethink the merits of this dream. The US rate of homeownership is at a historic high — 69 percent. But there’s no rule that says ‘countries prosper when ‘x’ percent of people own homes.’ Some developed nations have high homeowner rates (Singapore, 91 percent; Spain, 83 percent; Ireland, 77 percent). Others have lower ones (Switzerland, 35 percent; Germany, 43 percent; Denmark, 53 percent). The Declaration of Independence singles out ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,’ but the Founding Fathers often spoke of life, liberty, and property...

How Giuliani lost America

CounterPunch
by Alexander Cockburn

04/08/07

In the aftermath of 9/11/2001 New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani seemed as sure a bet as you could hope for as the Republican candidate destined to seek the White House in 2008. He rallied his city amid the rubble of the Twin Towers. His, not Bush’s, was the firm voice of resolve. … Until recently the American people were thinking mainly about the circumstances of Anna Nicole Smith’s demise and the likely inheritor of the former Playmate’s millions. Now Anna Nicole Smith has been swept off the front pages, along with the beleagured Gonzales, by the pet food crisis. … Into this firestorm of national anguish now has been tossed the news that Mrs Judi Giuliani was once in the dog killing business. This disclosure came on the heels of the news that Judi had not been entirely forthcoming about the number of her legal unions. Like Rudy himself, it turns out she’s on her third. The hitherto undisclosed numero uno, whom she married at age 19, was a salesman at U.S. Surgical, a company selling surgical staples. Young Judi’s job was allegedly to demonstrate to potential purchasers their efficacy on cuts made on drugged dogs. … The stapling had to be done on live dogs because, as one US Surgical CEO put it back in the 1980s, ‘A dead dog doesn’t bleed. You need to have real blood-flow conditions, or you get a false sense of security.’ Giuliani’s campaign spokesman declined comment on the charges about Judi’s hands-on role...

The gutless mini-politics of the congressional Democrats

Free Market News Network
by Dave Lindorff

04/06/07

Despite polls showing that 6 in 10 Americans want the U.S. out of Iraq asap, the best that this crew can come up with is a call — not binding, of course — for the president to pull out the troops by next spring or even summer. That would be over a year from now, and more than five years (!) into this criminal and incredibly stupid war. At the rate things have been going, it would also be perhaps 1000 more dead Americans, 14,000 more gravely wounded Americans, and 100-150,000 more dead Iraqis later. And in offering this limp request, Congress is in the process of approving the appropriation of another $122 million in spending on the War in Iraq and the War in Afghanistan. This is action?

Iraq war protester marches to Bush’s ranch

Reuters

04/07/07

Iraq war protester Cindy Sheehan urged President George W. Bush to ‘end this madness’ in Iraq on Friday in a march toward Bush’s ranch. Sheehan, a vocal protester of the war since her soldier son, Casey, was killed in Iraq in 2004, also expressed disappointment with Democrats in charge of the U.S. Congress for failing to stop the war. Sheehan, a vocal protester of the war since her soldier son, Casey, was killed in Iraq in 2004, also expressed disappointment with Democrats in charge of the U.S. Congress for failing to stop the war. Sheehan took advantage of a heavy media presence covering Bush’s Easter weekend by leading an anti-war protest of about three dozen people in a march to the security checkpoint outside Bush’s ranch. Sheehan asked police at the security checkpoint for permission to go see Bush and was told no. She and her group set up an altar with candles on top and she read aloud some of the names of the more than 3,200 American soldiers killed in Iraq...

Marc Tucker's "NEW" education plan

by Dennis Cuddy, Ph.D

Hillary Clinton at the beginning of her husband's presidency in 1993 developed a health care program that Milton Friedman called Socialist. During her own bid for the presidency, on March 17, 2007 in Houston she announced not only that she wants to provide health care for all Americans, but she also announced that as president she would create a universal pre-kindergarten program. This would be working toward the "cradle" end of their plan referred to in Tucker's 1992 letter......

O'Reilly, Rosie, & 911 coincidences

by Devvy Kidd

By now, most Americans have heard of the 911 bombs Rosie O'Donnell has been dropping on a show called The View. I've never wasted a minute of what time I have on this earth watching that show for many reasons, Rosie O'Donnell being at the top of the list. I monitor O'Reilly's show as well as the other factually challenged, partisan mouthpieces on FOX, CNN and MSNBC. Recently O'Donnell has, in her usual loud, bullying manner, began unleashing certain allegations regarding 911 on The View.......
