Gold-Plated Indifference

"What's really striking about Mr. Bush's remarks is the tone. The stuff about providing 'incentives' to buy insurance, the sneering description of good coverage as 'gold plated,' is right-wing think-tank jargon," writes Paul Krugman. "In the past Mr. Bush's speechwriters might have found less offensive language; now, they're not even trying to hide his fundamental indifference to the plight of less-fortunate Americans."

Your MasterCard or Your Life

"A disturbing new report shows that with health care costs continuing their sharp rise," writes Bob Herbert, "low- and middle-income patients are reaching for their credit cards with alarming frequency to cover treatment that they otherwise would be unable to afford. This medical debt, to be paid off in many cases at sky-high interest rates, is being loaded onto consumer debt that is already at dangerously high levels. Many families have been crushed by the load, driven from their homes, forced into bankruptcy, and worse."

Mired in the Trenches of the Iraq Fiasco

Adam Hochschild writes: "If we needed more evidence that those surrounding President George W. Bush have a tin ear for the lessons of history, it came ten days ago, when National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley referred to increasing the number of American troops in Iraq as 'the big push' that would bring victory closer."

Überfischung: Konferenz diskutiert Rückgang der Tunfisch-Bestände

22.01.07

Bush’s soldier-kids

Common Dreams
by Jacqueline Marcus

01/21/07

As I was standing in line at the market the other day, I looked up and noticed between the tabloid magazines, bubble gum and chocolate bars, the cover of Time Magazine: a young boy in a combat helmet who looked no older than fourteen. … During the recent televised interviews, George W. Bush referred to our soldiers as ‘kids.’ He was smiling, completely unaffected by the unconscionable fact of his assertion. No one says a word, including Hillary Clinton, who was proud to announce that she called a young boy’s mother in New York from an Afghanistan military medical camp to let her know that her son is getting good medical assistance. … Bush’s ’surge’ is a military euphemism for sacrificing twenty thousand CHILDREN into his Iraq’s purgatory. And should his ’soldier-kids’ survive Iraq’s purgatory, many will return without legs, arms or faces severely deformed beyond recognition...

Intelligence vs. evidence

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

01/22/07

You’ll recall that we had scads of intelligence coming at us, including on the front page of the New York Times, such that even most war opponents — present company excluded — conceded that Saddam undoubtedly did have ‘weapons of mass destruction,’ but that, for other reasons, we ought to at least delay attacking him. There was, however, as some of us pointed out at the time, no hard evidence of Iraq’s fabled WMD. Like tales of the Yeti and the Loch Ness monster, breathless stories of the Saddam Bomb, ubiquitous since the early 1990s, turned out to be utterly false, imaginative narratives spun by Ahmed Chalabi and his fellow ‘heroes in error,’ with a little help from Judith Miller. I suppose it takes a libertarian to fully appreciate the irony of how American taxpayers paid for their own deception. Once again, we are seeing the victory of ‘intelligence’ over solid evidence, this time in the run-up to war with Iran...

Russia sees threat from US plan for missiles in eastern Europe

Czechs Give Go-Ahead for US "Son of Star Wars" Base

The Czech government has announced that it wants to host a large US military site for the Pentagon's much-criticized missile shield system, confirming for the first time that Washington had asked Prague for permission to build a radar site for the national missile defense program. Russia had warned earlier this month that any extension of the US missile project to eastern Europe would force it to review its own missile defenses.

Senators Seek Support Against Iraq Surge

Senate Democrats are building support for a bipartisan resolution opposing Bush's war strategy in Iraq, cautioning that division over whether it goes far enough could spell defeat. "The worst thing we can do is to vote on something critical of the current policy and lose it," said Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.), who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee. "The public doesn't support his policy, a majority of Congress doesn't support his policy. If we lose it, the president will use the defeat of a resolution as support of his public policy."
