Phone mast 'yes' despite concerns

A CONTROVERSIAL mobile phone mast looks set to be built on hills above Whitworth.
Members of Rossendale Council’s development control committee approved the plan by six votes to one at a meeting at Hardmans Mill on Monday night.
Councillors accepted a prior notification application by communications giant Orange to build the 15-metre structure in High Barn Lane, close to Cowm Reservoir and other Green Belt land.
Nearly 650 individual letters of objection from local residents were received by the council. Concerns included the visual impact the scheme would have on the landscape, that a magnetic field set up by the phone mast would affect wildlife, radiation emitted from the column could be harmful to people and that the proposed construction was too large.
Councillor Catherine Pilling told the committee she had concerns about the mast’s location and also noted the number of objections to the application.
