Councillors reject advice to oppose mobile giant bid

CITY councillors have ignored expert advice and taken a major stand against mobile phone giant Vodafone over plans to upgrade a mast on the edge of a public park.
Planning committee members were told they were powerless to stop the company increasing the size of its mast next to Pype Hayes Park, in Eachelhurst Road, Erdington.
But they decided that it was too large for a parkside location and at 6ft tall the cabinet base presents a security risk as a hiding place for “lurkers” or “muggers”.
Committee vice-chairwoman Coun Paula Smith (Lib Dem, Hall Green) said: “There is a real safety risk. These cabinets are getting larger and larger and can conceal people behind them. Someone can easily lurk there.”
