US Soldiers Executed Iraqis, Statements Say

Paul Von Zielbauer, The New York Times: "In March or April 2007, three noncommissioned United States Army officers, including a first sergeant, a platoon sergeant and a senior medic, killed four Iraqi prisoners with pistol shots to the head as the men stood handcuffed and blindfolded beside a Baghdad canal, two of the soldiers said in sworn statements."

Zu viel Frieden in Deutschland?

Seeing Red, Feeling Blue in Purple America

David Sirota, YES! Magazine: "By all measures, those of us Americans not in the top 1 percent of income earners are under enormous economic pressure and most of us feel powerless to influence those who act in our name. Public attitudes toward Washington are reaching record levels of animosity. A Scripps Howard News Service poll in 2006 found a majority of Americans saying they 'personally are more angry' at the government than they used to be. And there’s a growing backlash against the hostile takeover of our government by Big Money interests. It’s the natural reaction from a country that is watching its pocket get picked."

Phone giant 'sneaky'

Published Date: 27 August 2008

By Anna Glover & David Waddington

PLANS to install a phone mast near an Old Colwyn residential area have sparked outrage.

Robert Dean of Wynn Avenue received a letter from planning company Mono Consultants giving residents 14 days to object to plans developed by phone giant Vodafone.

According to Mr Dean, the letter, which was sent to his home address, said the mast would be erected near the Aldi store on Abergele Road.
Furious Mr Roberts, who lives with his wife, daughter and granddaughter, stressed the mass could pose a "health hazard" for members of the community.

England’s surveillance state at work

Classically Liberal
by CLS

Dreary old England is suffering mightily under the weight of the authoritarian government of the Labour Party. Labour has been working assiduously to impose a total surveillance state trampling on traditional British freedoms. First, here is a video of the local police randomly stopping people and demanding to search them. As they make clear, if you do not ‘consent’ to being searched you will be arrested. Of course, once they arrest you they can search you. In other words, in England, the police may search anyone they wish, anytime they wish without any probabl[e] cause...

Very Big Brother, man weiß ja nie...

What a McCain Victory Would Mean

Robert Parry, Consortium News: "In judging the shape of a future John McCain presidency, there are already plenty of dots that are easy to connect. They reveal an image of a war-like Empire so full of hubris that it could take the world into a cascade of crises, while extinguishing what is left of the noble American Republic."

The Hollow Man

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "The facts reveal that Mr. McCain has thrown his support behind just about every asinine and idiotic decision made by the single most unpopular and unsuccessful American president there ever was and, God willing, ever will be. The facts reveal that he has boomeranged away from so many policy positions he once espoused, going so far as to denounce a whole sheaf of legislation he had personally authored, because the Republican base despised those issues, but since he needed their support if he ever wanted to have a chance of winning, it was whiplash be damned and the Devil take the hindmost."

US Judge: No Delay in White House Subpoenas Case

Matt Apuzzo, The Associated Press: "A federal judge who ruled last month that top White House advisers must comply with Congressional subpoenas refused to put that ruling on hold Tuesday while the Bush administration appeals."

Bush Steps Up Fight Over Balance of Power

Matt Apuzzo, The Associated Press: "The Bush administration is raising the stakes in a court fight that could change the balance of power between the White House and Congress. Justice Department lawyers said Wednesday that they will soon ask a federal appeals court not to force the president's top advisers to comply with congressional subpoenas next month. President Bush argues that Congress doesn't have the authority to demand information from his aides."

Denver: Reporter arrested taking pictures at meeting

ABC News

Police in Denver arrested an ABC News producer today as he and a camera crew were attempting to take pictures on a public sidewalk of Democratic Senators and VIP donors leaving a private meeting at the Brown Palace Hotel. Police on the scene refused to tell ABC lawyers the charges against the producer, Asa Eslocker, who works with the ABC News investigative unit. A cigar-smoking Denver police sergeant, accompanied by a team of five other officers, first put his hands on Eslocker’s neck, then twisted the producers arm behind him to put on handcuffs. A police official later told lawyers for ABC News that Eslocker is being charged with trespass, interference, and failure to follow a lawful order. He also said the arrest followed a signed complaint from the Brown Palace Hotel...

Denver: Activists fly the ‘freedom cage’

Christian Science Monitor

They’re outside city offices, in parks, on the capitol steps and near the US Mint. But the one place most protesters here are avoiding is the official demonstration zone, a fenced-in parking lot near the Democratic National Convention that activists here mockingly call “the freedom cage.’ The 47,000-square-foot zone is hemmed by rows of metal barricades and concrete barriers and watched over by uniformed Secret Service agents. Views of the Pepsi Center convention site, some 700 feet away, are blocked by a giant tent housing news media.

On Monday afternoon, a couple hours after the convention kicked off, the zone was an asphalt desert. …. Even so, most protesters are taking their message elsewhere, many to a constellation of 13 parks within a mile of the Pepsi Center. One of the most active groups is Recreate 68, an alliance of anticorporate and antiwar protesters that has demonstration permits every day of the convention. But rallies and parades have also being staged by groups pitching everything from immigrant rights, women’s equality, and Ralph Nader to lower fuel costs, legal marijuana, and a united Jerusalem.Police have so far been underwhelmed. A parade permitted for 25,000 Sunday drew just 1,000, according to the city. A march on Monday was so small that police reopened closed streets. As of Tuesday night, the city had reported 135 convention-related arrests. Most occurred Monday night, when police say a crowd of 300 disrupting traffic near Civic Center Park refused requests to disperse and then rushed a police line. Suspects were charged with disobeying orders, obstructing a public street, and interference, violations of city ordinances...

War With Russia Is On The Agenda

Thinking about the massive failure of the US media to report truthfully is sobering. The United States, bristling with nuclear weapons and pursuing a policy of world hegemony, has a population that is kept in the dark--indeed brainwashed--about the most important and most dangerous events of our time.
