“Toughness” of imperial presidency not due our respect

In a Tennessee Voices piece Tuesday (You don’t have to like Bush, but you’ve got to respect his toughness), John Rebrovick writes that he is ‘thankful’ that George W. Bush is ‘president for one overriding reason: He has recognized and engaged the enemy, and despite all the handwringers, bitter opposition and the low favorability ratings, he has held that line in the sand which his father drew nearly 20 years ago.’ … As a retired historian, I cannot let these remarks stand without seriously challenging them in the name of one of the 20th-century leaders of my profession, George Santayana, who said: ‘Those who do not know the past are doomed to repeat it’...
