The World Bank president, Paul Wolfowitz, yesterday said he made ‘a mistake for which I am sorry’ over his handling of the promotion and pay increase for his girlfriend, Shaha Riza. ‘I proposed to the board that they establish some mechanism to judge whether the agreement reached was a reasonable outcome,’ Mr Wolfowitz said in a statement handed out before a news conference ahead of meetings of finance ministers in Washington this weekend. ‘I will accept any remedies they propose,’ he added. … The controversy erupted last week when the bank’s staff association questioned the promotion and pay increase for Ms Riza, prompting an investigation by the bank’s board of member countries. Mr Wolfowitz said he admitted his relationship with Ms Riza to the board when he joined the bank and took the advice of the board’s ethics committee to promote and relocate her...
