The White House said today that it may have lost what could amount to thousands of messages sent through a private email system used by political guru Karl Rove and at least 50 other top officials, an admission that stirred anger and dismay among Congressional investigators.

A report Thursday details steps taken by the Bush administration to intentionally subvert the mandatory archiving of official email. The report indicates that the Bush administration willfully dismantled the email archiving system put in place by the Clinton administration and did not replace it with an adequate method to keep track of administration email, resulting in the loss of millions of messages.
