Probe Sought of Bush Handling of Alaska Oil-Spill Case

Renee Schoof, McClatchy Newspapers: "An environmental watchdog group asked the Department of Justice's inspector general on Monday to investigate whether the department had prematurely halted a criminal prosecution of BP for a 2006 oil spill in Alaska. Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility filed the complaint on behalf of Scott West, who as the special agent in charge for the Environmental Protection Agency participated in the federal and state investigation of the spill."

In Final Days, Bush Pushes for Iraq's Oil

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "As the Bush administration rumbles to an end, it is pushing with increasing urgency for a commitment to a long-term US presence in Iraq. Though the military aspect of this 'commitment' has garnered substantial publicity, the administration is equally invested in the economic aspect: securing US control over Iraqi oil before Bush leaves office, according to experts in the field."

City families set up anti-mast group

Rupert Read, Green Party city councillor for the Wensum Ward, at the spot on Earlham Green Lane, where Orange are planning to put a phone mast.

11 November 2008 17:00

People living in one city ward have united to oppose plans for another mobile mast by forming a campaign group to stop it being set up near their homes.

Earlham Mast Fight has already collected 100 signatures of support in its fight against a 20-metre mast being put up on an industrial estate on Guardian Road.

The mast has been proposed by Orange and it is the third application in just one month in the Wensum ward, with applications already submitted for two masts close to the Co-op in Earlham Green Lane.

Vom Ausbeutungsfeld Arbeitsplatz

Minnesota ripe for election fraud

Fox News
by John R. Lott, Jr.

Minnesota is becoming to 2008 politics what Florida was in 2000 or Washington State in 2004 — a real mess. The outcome will determine whether Democrats get 58 members of the U.S. Senate, giving them an effective filibuster-proof vote on many issues. When voters woke up on Wednesday morning after the election, Senator Norm Coleman led Al Franken by what seemed like a relatively comfortable 725 votes. … Late Sunday night, the difference had gone down to just 221 — a total change over 4 days of 504 votes. Amazingly, this all has occurred even though there hasn’t even yet been a recount. Just local election officials correcting claimed typos in how the numbers were reported. Counties will certify their results today, and their final results will be sent to the secretary of state by Friday. The actual recount won’t even start until November 19...

GOP needs Night of Long Knives

Human Events
by Deroy Murdock

The GOP has been laid low, thanks to politicians who swapped their principles for power and lost both. As the chief electoral vehicle for conservative and free-market ideas, the Republican Party cannot regain America’s confidence, nor should it, until the guilty have been catapulted into the nearest volcano. Comrade George W. Bush has spearheaded the most aggressive federal expansion since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. As a delivery system for socialism, he has been the most effective Trojan Horse since that pine steed rolled into Troy...

Hospitals Deport Seriously Ill, Uninsured Immigrants

Deborah Sontag, The New York Times: "Soon after Antonio Torres, a husky 19-year-old farmworker, suffered catastrophic injuries in a car accident last June, a Phoenix hospital began making plans for his repatriation to Mexico. Mr. Torres was comatose and connected to a ventilator. He was also a legal immigrant whose family lives and works in the purple alfalfa fields of this southwestern town. But he was uninsured. So the hospital disregarded the strenuous objections of his grief-stricken parents and sent Mr. Torres on a four-hour journey over the California border into Mexicali."

Bush Spy Revelations Anticipated When Obama Is Sworn In

Ryan Singel, Wired.com: "When Barack Obama takes the oath of office on January 20, Americans won't just get a new president; they might finally learn the full extent of George W. Bush's warrantless domestic wiretapping. Now privacy advocates are hopeful that President Obama will be more forthcoming with information. But for the quickest and most honest account of Bush's illegal policies, they say don't look to the incoming president. Watch instead for the hidden army of would-be whistle-blowers who've been waiting for Inauguration Day to open the spigot on the truth."

A Recipe for the Next Great Depression

The Mini-Depression and the Maximum-Strength Remedy

Robert Reich, TPM Cafe: "This is not the Great Depression of the 1930s, but nor is it turning out to be merely a bad recession of the kind we've experienced periodically over the last half century. Call it a Mini Depression. The employment report last Friday shows job losses accelerating, along with the number of Americans working part time who'd rather be and need to be working full time. Retail sales have fallen off a cliff. Stock prices continue to drop. General Motors is on the brink of bankruptcy. The rate of home foreclosures is mounting."
