Bush Authorizes Record Defense Budget

Maya Schenwar, Truthout: "Last week, Bush signed the 2009 Defense Authorization Act, allowing $611 billion to be spent this fiscal year on defense. Though the number was not a surprise - the money in the bill had already been appropriated over the last few months - this bill makes it official, placing ceilings on spending, granting authority on who gets to spend what, and nailing the 2009 defense budget into place. It is the highest defense budget since World War II, and Pentagon officials estimate that it will increase by $450 billion over the next five years."

McCain Giving Up on Colorado, Reports Say

US Election: McCain Campaign Backing Away From Colorado

Suzanne Goldenberg, The Guardian UK: "John McCain's path to the presidency narrowed further today with reports that the Republican was giving up on Colorado, a day after a campaign swing through the battleground state by his running mate, Sarah Palin. The signs of retrenchment for McCain came as a new poll showed Barack Obama steadily increasing his lead since mid-September."

F Is for Failure: The Bush Doctrine in Ruins

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "On the brief occasions when the President now appears in the Rose Garden to 'comfort' or 'reassure' a shock-and-awed nation, you can almost hear those legions of ducks quacking lamely in the background. Once upon a time, George W. Bush, along with his top officials and advisors, hoped to preside over a global Pax Americana and a domestic Pax Republicana - a legacy for the generations. More recently, their highest hope seems to have been to slip out of town in January before the you-know-what hits the fan. No such luck."

Number’s up for phone mast plan

by Ben Turner

Macclesfield Express - United Kingdom

22/10/2008

RESIDENTS are celebrating after plans for a large Vodafone mast in the centre of Tytherington were scrapped.

The communications’ giant withdrew its application to install a mobile phone mast on Manchester Road, close to the Shell Service Station, following objections from Ian Davies and his neighbours on Bluebell Close – and, bizarrely, the Bat Society.

Residents sent letters of protest to Macclesfield Borough Council on the grounds that the mast did not meet Government guidelines and was too close to Marlborough Primary School and Tytherington High School.

Would Republicans accuse Joe the Plumber of voter fraud?

Mother Jones
by James Ridgeway

10/16/08

Under the GOP’s current vote suppression strategy in Ohio, McCain’s now famous icon might have had a hard time casting a ballot. In a case that has now gone to the Supreme Court for review, Republicans in the state are challenging the registrations of all new voters whose names and other information do not exactly match those in government databases. It turns out that one of the present Ohio voters who could have fallen into this category is Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher — or is it Worzelbacher? — otherwise known as Joe the Plumber. The man John McCain lionized in Wednesday night’s debate has since had every aspect of his life scrutinized by the media. They’ve uncovered some contradictory facts, to say the least: He’s not really a plumber, he probably wouldn’t pay more taxes under Obama if he bought his business, and he hasn’t actually paid some of the taxes he already owes. He’s also registered to vote under a different name...

A Philosophical Dead-end

By Conor Clarke

In 2000 George Bush ran for president as something called a compassionate conservative, which Bush described obscurely as "first and foremost springing from the heart". But the heart, Bush was quick to insist, must be set free. The word "regulations" or its variants crops up 28 times in the 2000 platform, and Bush wasn't asking for more of them. Instead, he was fond of mocking Al Gore for presiding over a regulatory bureaucracy.

Why Wont The Bail Out Work?

Video

Voters are rightly furious at the proposal to spend $700,000,000,000 that the government doesn't have to bail out Wall Street bankers who created the current economic crisis in the first place. But why then aren't we concerned about the trillions of dollars the Federal Reserve is pumping into the system? Or the trillions missing from the Pentagon? Or the quadrillion dollar derivatives bubble.

Fed announces new plan to help money market funds

Las Vegas Review-Journal

10/21/08

First, it was the banks. Now the Federal Reserve has come to the aid of money market funds as the government seeks to break the credit logjam that threatens the global economy. A week after the government announced it would spend $250 billion to buy stakes in U.S. banks, the Fed stepped up Tuesday to help money market funds that have been squeezed by worried investors demanding to cash out their holdings. Meanwhile, the Treasury named two accounting firms to help manage the $700 billion bailout package...

Is this a good idea? The surprising answer in this video from Dean Baker of the Center for Economic and Policy Research highlights why it’s important for grassroots activists to stay informed and stay active as federal officials move quickly, with no real congressional or public input, to reshape the financial landscape...
