Mobile masts bid near schools

12:30pm Monday 20th October 2008

By Gerran Grimshaw

CONTROVERSIAL plans for two mobile phone masts, both close to York primary schools, have been filed with the city council.

Mobile phone firm O2 wants to install a communications mast on the roof of the King William pub, in Barkston Avenue, Chapelfields.

Governors at nearby Westfield Primary Community School have already criticised the telecommunications giant for failing to consider the wellbeing of youngsters.

Government To Spy On Every Mobile Phone User In Britain

The planned database containing information on every email and phone call, held at GCHQ

Everyone who buys a mobile telephone will be forced to register their identity on a national database under government plans to extend massively the powers of state surveillance. Phone buyers would have to present a passport or other official form of identification at the point of purchase. Privacy campaigners fear it marks the latest government move to create a surveillance society. The Labour government is behaving irresponsibly and illegally with our privacy. There will be hell to pay at the ballot box for this.

UK: Big Brother database threatens to 'break the back of freedom'

Government plans to build a giant database holding information about every phone call, email and internet visit were last night dealt a major blow after the man in charge of prosecuting terrorism in England and Wales warned of the dangers posed by a "Big Brother" security state.

UK: Government black boxes will ‘collect every email’

Independent [UK]

11/05/08

Internet “black boxes” will be used to collect every email and web visit in the UK under the Government’s plans for a giant “big brother” database, The Independent has learnt. Home Office officials have told senior figures from the internet and telecommunications industries that the “black box” technology could automatically retain and store raw data from the web before transferring it to a giant central database controlled by the Government. Plans to create a database holding information about every phone call, email and internet visit made in the UK have provoked a huge public outcry. Richard Thomas, the Information Commissioner, described it as “step too far” and the Government’s own terrorism watchdog said that as a “raw idea” it was “awful”...

Iraq Wins Right to Prosecute Felonies by Off-Duty US Troops

Agence France-Presse: "Iraq has secured the right to prosecute US soldiers and civilians for crimes committed outside their bases and when off duty, in the latest draft of a security pact that will set the terms of their deployment beyond this year. The draft stipulates that the United States will have the primary right to exercise jurisdiction over its soldiers and civilians if they commit a crime inside their facilities or when on missions, according to a copy obtained by AFP."

The Real Plumbers of Ohio

Paul Krugman, The New York Times: "Forty years ago, Richard Nixon made a remarkable marketing discovery. By exploiting America's divisions - divisions over Vietnam, divisions over cultural change and, above all, racial divisions - he was able to reinvent the Republican brand. The party of plutocrats was repackaged as the party of the 'silent majority,' the regular guys - white guys, it went without saying - who didn't like the social changes taking place. It was a winning formula. And the great thing was that the new packaging didn't require any change in the product's actual contents - in fact, the GOP was able to keep winning elections even as its actual policies became more pro-plutocrat, and less favorable to working Americans, than ever."

Voters Say They Were Duped Into Registering as Republicans

Old Growth Forests Are Carbon Sinks and Must Be Protected

ISIS Press Release 20/10/08

A forest levy and other financial mechanisms within the Kyoto Protocol are appropriate measures for protecting natural forests. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

General misconception leaves old growth forests especially vulnerable to wonton destruction

Old-growth forests sequester carbon in live woody tissues and in slowly decomposing litter on the ground and buried in the soil, thereby acting as effective global carbon sinks. Yet, they are not protected by international treaties because of general misconception that ageing forests cease to accumulate carbon.

An international team of scientists led by Sebastian Luyssaert at the University of Antwerp in Belgium reviewed the literature and existing databases for forests between 15 and 800 years old. They found that all forests, from the youngest to the oldest, show positive net ecosystem productivity; i.e., they are growing and hence sequestering or accumulating carbon [1].

Over 30 percent of the global forest area is unmanaged primary forest and this area contains the remaining old growth forests. Half of the primary forests (covering 600 million ha) are located in boreal (near the Arctic) and temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere. These forests alone sequester about 1.3 + 0.5 Gt of C per year. This 15 percent of the global forest area currently not considered when offsetting increasing atmospheric CO2, provides at least 10 percent of the global net ecosystem productivity. Old-growth forests accumulate carbon for centuries and contain large quantities that will move back into the atmosphere if these forests are disturbed or cut down, especially tropical forests [2, 3] (Saving and Restoring Forests Saves Far More Carbon Emissions than Biofuels, SiS 37) .

Net ecosystem productivity and age of forests

Net ecosystem productivity (NEP) is the net carbon balance of the forest ecosystem as a whole, and is the difference between CO2 uptake by photosynthetic assimilation and losses through plant and soil respiration. Tropical forests were excluded from the study because of the lack of data, and only 12 sites were found for which NEP and age estimates are available.

Self-imposed crisis?

TCS Daily
by Craig S. Marxsen

10/17/08

How can such an old-fashioned liquidity crisis panic financial markets under today’s regime of fiat money? The Federal Reserve was fighting energy and food inflation by slowing the money growth rate. The low interest rates were an ambiguous indicator of monetary policy because an energy crisis was depressing the return on expansions of the capital stock. The energy crisis of the 1970s also depressed the real or inflation adjusted interest rate in a feedback loop that further discouraged petroleum extraction...

Dear conservatives, will you help save the republic from military takeover?

AlterNet
by Naomi Wolf

10/18/08

The founders sought to keep soldiers off our streets because they knew how easily a standing army could subdue a population. That’s why the National Guard is answerable primarily to the governors of states and hence to the people of the United States. But the military is answerable to the commander in chief. These are the president’s troops. The president now has a personal army. One definition of a police state is when the leader has seized control of the military to police citizens domestically. Why listen to me? Not because I am a genius, but because this blueprint is so very predictive. Listen to me because everything that I warned would happen, according to the historical record, has happened, and I have documented the borne-out evidence of the crisis in Give Me Liberty...

American conservatism is “Gone with the Wind”

Whatever one says about Marx, certainly some later thinkers of that School, along with some early Americans over a century ago, saw this rise of Finance Capitalism, as opposed to earlier Industrial or Entrepreneurial varieties. Carroll Quigley in 1961 correctly called it ‘Financial Capitalism,’ in The Evolution of Civilizations. CQ understood already morally bankrupted Empires then proceed to economically bankrupt themselves in seeking to fulfill both their Warfare and Welfare dimensions. The Total State! These take a long time to actually ‘fall,’ but the ‘decline’ can go on for a long time, unless a new ‘instruments of expansion’ can be discovered and then decentrally put into use without the bureaucracy comprehending what has occurred...

Capitalism or freedom

Foundation for Economic Education
by Sheldon Richman

10/17/08

‘These measures are not intended to take over the free market, but to preserve it,’ George W. Bush said in Orwellian tones Tuesday as he announced the partial nationalization of nine major American banks. He was partly right, though not in the way he meant his words. There is no free financial market to take over. But that means there is no free market to preserve either. The moves he announced, which include government part-ownership of smaller banks too, were just more, albeit big, steps along the corporatist route the country has been following for generations...

The coming military spending surge

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

10/16/08

A substantial progressive landslide — involving the White House, over a dozen House seats, and at least half a dozen Senate seats — now looks like an increasingly likely scenario for November. But to translate electoral victory into policy victory will require this new progressive majority to free itself from forces that are already gathering steam. Forces that will, if successful, prevent it from doing anything more than offering a term or two to clean up the most egregious aspects of the current mess in order to lay the groundwork for a new round of tax cuts and deregulation. … Less noted amidst the recent focus on the economy, though crucially important, is the fact that the uniformed military is preparing an ambush for the next president...

More voters say machines are switching votes

Charleston [WV] Gazette

Three Putnam County voters say electronic voting machines changed their votes from Democrats to Republicans when they cast early ballots last week. This is the second West Virginia county where voters have reported this problem. Last week, three voters in Jackson County told the Charleston Gazette their electronic vote for ‘Barack Obama’ kept flipping to ‘John McCain.’ In both counties, Republicans are responsible for overseeing elections. Both county clerks said the problem is isolated. They also blamed voters for not being more careful. ‘People make mistakes more than machines,’ said Jackson County Clerk Jeff Waybright...

Fox News

As John McCain and Barack Obama prepare for the final sprint after wrapping up Wednesday’s presidential debate, it appears Ohio’s Democratic Secretary of State, Jennifer Brunner, is running a race of her own. On late Wednesday evening, Brunner filed an emergency appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court seeking to block a decision handed down Tuesday by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. The Sixth Circuit directed Brunner to hand over to local election officials ready and direct access to computerized lists of new voters whose registrations do not match state driver records or Social Security information. A 2002 federal law required states to create a statewide database of voter registration information and to verify new voter information by matching such information with other public records...
