A CONTROVERSIAL bid to build a new mobile phone mast in Barnards Green is back on the cards.

Mobile giant 02 has submitted an application to Malvern Hills District Council to put up a 12.5m mast with three antennas on the Six Ways Industrial Estate, in Barnards Green Road.

The mast would be made to look like a telegraph pole, and require an equipment cabinet nearby.

An application by O2 for a 15m mast on the same site in 2006 was refused after members of the public raised concerns over then visual impact, and the possible harmful effects from radiation.

Matt Apuzzo and Lara Jakes Jordan report for The Associated Press: "Federal prosecutors investigating the 2001 anthrax attacks were planning to indict and seek the death penalty against a top Army microbiologist in connection with anthrax mailings that killed five people. The scientist, who was developing a vaccine against the deadly toxin, committed suicide this week."

Die Partei DIE LINKE unterstützt die Demonstration "Freiheit statt Angst - Stoppt den Überwachungswahn!" am 11. Oktober 2008 in Berlin. Eine entsprechende Erklärung wurde heute abgegeben. Dazu erklärt die stellvertretende Vorsitzende Halina Wawzyniak:

Die Demonstration richtet sich gegen die zunehmende allumfassende Überwachung von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern und damit gegen das sukzessive Verschwinden der Privatsphäre. Wer eine widerständige Demokratie will, muss auf Datensammlung und Überwachung von Bürgerinnen und Bürgern verzichten. Dafür wollen wir am 11. Oktober demonstrieren. Der Umgang des Staates mit den persönlichen Daten seiner Bürgerinnen und Bürger wird immer ungenierter. Das Recht auf informationelle Selbstbestimmung wird nach und nach ausgehöhlt. Mit der Unterstützung der Demonstration wollen wir erneut deutlich machen, dass der Kampf gegen Überwachung und für Demokratie nicht nur im Parlament, sondern auch auf der Straße stattfinden muss. Im Gegensatz zu Bündnis 90/Grünen und der SPD hat DIE LINKE der Sicherheitshysterie stets widerstanden. DIE LINKE bleibt dabei: Der Schutz von Bürgerrechten muss Priorität haben. Alle Bürgerinnen und Bürger haben das Recht, über ihre Daten zu bestimmen. Sie müssen nachvollziehen können, welche Daten über sie wo und warum gespeichert werden. Sie müssen über deren Verwendung informiert werden.
