Avatar Obama and the United States of Hype

Angel Luis Lara, La Jornada (Translation: Ryan Croken): "We live in the era of hype. The word, which bounces and bounds throughout the matrices of our information age, refers to a cultural product that has been so juiced up with marketing that its popularity takes off independently and regardless of its quality. It is the wrapping that matters: the advertisement is louder, more important and more real than what is advertised."

The 2010 political timebomb is unemployment

The Nation
by John Nichols

American employers eliminated 4.2 million jobs in 2009 and sent unemployment soaring into double digits for the first time in more than a quarter century. Since the fall of last year, the official jobless rate has been over ten percent, while the unofficial rate (taking in the severely underemployed and those who have given up looking) has been over 17 percent. Analysts had predicted that December layoffs would number around 8,000. Instead, the figure was more than ten times higher: 85,000. Unemployment held steady at 10 percent — not because the job market is stabilizing, but because tens of thousands of Americans gave up looking for work and are no longer counted among the unemployed...

by Nick Bravo

01/28/10

It’s easy for the masses to make excuses about homelessness, that the people who are homeless are crazy, or criminals, or drug addicts, or in some other way the worthless floatasm of society that should be pushed to the edge and out of the sight of ‘polite society.’ The homeless are scorned, ridiculed, pitied, taken advantage of in many ways and where can the homeless go for help? Not the police, the police more often than not are given free range to abuse and victimize the most disenfranchised members of society. In many ways the homeless are the perfect prey for societal predators who sadistically thirst for the thrill of harming one of their own kind...
