Mobile phone masts and health in the news again

By Ian Douglas

Last updated: January 15th, 2010

The erection of a new mobile phone mast is often met with local opposition, with complaints of ...

I thought this report was interesting but without independent evidence from those actually living near this real mast - having used a microwave monitor confirming this mast was turned off day and night for 6 weeks - there is no proof that this mast was turned off as the company stated.

Laboratory tests using mocked up masts are not the same as living near a mast twenty four hours a day, as there will be many emission fluctuations from an actual mast in real time.

Some neighbours of mine were told a mast was turned off a few years back - before microwave monitors were easily available - and then when I managed to borrow such a monitor - I found the opposite to be the case. So, I personally could never accept a mobile phone company's statement that a mast was turned off unless I had checked for myself. Its a shame these poor people have not had that benefit.

Secret police

by Brian Doherty

Civil libertarians hoped that the Obama era would see a renewed commitment to privacy protections. But their dreams are being dashed. Congress seems likely to recess without adjusting aspects of the Patriot Act set to expire at the end of the year, which means that the existing law will be temporarily extended. Elements up for reconsideration include roving wiretaps in foreign intelligence investigations that are not targeted to a specific communication mode or person and ’section 215’ ability to seize business or other records in a presumptive terror investigation...

If you liked the Patriot Act …

Just how far down this road are you willing to go? How much of your life, privacy, dignity and self-respect are you willing to lay bare, if you will, in the name of security? The right to see you naked

Ludwig von Mises Institute
by Christopher Westley

Providence, Rhode Island, journalist Froma Harrop is as establishmentarian as they come, and her post-Christmas-Day-terrorist-bombing-attempt column does nothing to alleviate this impression. The title? ‘To Be Safe Flying, We’d Happily Perform This Strip Tease.’ That failed attempt, you see, did not simply exhilarate those on the left and right, who see it as reason to justify further expansions of state power. In Harrop’s case, it also brings out her inner exhibitionist...

Bob Wiedemer is explaining to a roomful of hedge-fund investors that the end of America as we know it won’t be as bad as they think. Wiedemer is co-author of the new book Aftershock: Protect Yourself and Profit in the Next Global Financial Meltdown. Sound overblown? That’s what they said about his first book, America’s Bubble Economy, in which Wiedemer and his co-authors, his Ph.D. brother David and writer Cindy Spitzer, predicted that the U.S. residential real-estate market was overvalued and due for a crash. That was in 2006, months before the crash actually occurred. Now Wiedemer is warning people that another bubble is about to collapse: America itself...

Saving capitalism …

The Weekly Standard
by Irwin M. Stelzer

We have met the enemy and he is us. So Pogo might have described the situation that the business community has created for itself. There is no question that the Obama administration, and even more the Democratic leadership in Congress, harbor something between skepticism and hostility towards free markets. They believe they can do a better job of allocating the nation’s resources than can millions of consumers signaling their preferences to millions of producers by setting the cash registers ringing. That’s one reason — indebtedness to trade unions is another — Obama and the Democrats bailed out a manufacturer of cars no one wanted to buy. But the wave of regulations that characterized the latter part of the Bush administration and the first year of the Obama administration has as much to do with the behavior of the business community, or at least some of its most prominent members, as with the ideological bent of our political masters... President Obama, the “war on terror,” and liberty

Intellectual Conservative
by Jack Kerwick

War is the emblem of a state emergency. There is no greater crisis that a state can suffer, no set of circumstances further removed from the ordinary, than those of war. It is true that in our violent, broken world, war, regrettably, is more often than not an indispensable means to sustaining freedom, but it is no less true that during times of war freedom is never more greatly imperiled, for it is then that the government, in the name of victory, faces none of the resistance to the measures it appropriates that it otherwise would. It is during war that government is expected to exercise its vast powers, not just toward the Enemy, but toward citizens. To put it more simply, when a state is at war, its government can coerce the citizenry far easily and to a far greater extent than it could at any other time...

Obama's Latest Ruse: The Bank Tax

Return to government by the people, for the people

Boston Globe
by Joe Kennedy

I did not get into this race for fame or money. It cuts my pay and intrudes into my private life, but I expected that. I entered because every day I see more friends out of work, struggling to support their families, and I know how to fix it. Our taxes increase, while those on entitlements live better than those working multiple jobs to support their families. This must be stopped. Like many in Massachusetts, I am fed up with government taking money and freedoms, giving us nothing in return. Everyday when you go to work to feed your family, Congress goes to work to take more from you. I will not let that continue. We, as a nation, invade and occupy foreign lands to protect ‘our interests.’ In truth, it is because of oil. Our interests should be the men and women who have completed their mission and want to come home...

Environmentalists Outraged Over Obama's Offshore Plan

Arctic permafrost “leaking methane at record levels”

The Guardian [UK]

Experts say methane emissions from the Arctic have risen by almost one-third in just five years, and that sharply rising temperatures are to blame. The discovery follows a string of reports from the region in recent years that previously frozen boggy soils are melting and releasing methane in greater quantities. Such Arctic soils currently lock away billions of tonnes of methane, a far more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, leading some scientists to describe melting permafrost as a ticking time bomb that could overwhelm efforts to tackle climate change...

Scientists: Methane frozen beneath Arctic sea bed destabilizing

Times Online [UK]

Huge quantities of methane below the Arctic seabed are showing signs of destabilising, according to research conducted in the East Siberian Sea. Scientists aboard Russian icebreakers have discovered that methane is leaking from the sub-sea permafrost far faster than had been previously estimated, raising concerns that climatic tipping points may have been reached. As a greenhouse gas, methane is 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide but emissions from subsea permafrost are not included in climate change prediction models...

Is Obama a Republican?

When it comes to defense, history suggests that the two major parties offer a choice on the order of McDonald’s and Burger King. Anyone looking back 50 years from now at objective indicators would have trouble identifying a meaningful difference between the current president and the last one. For that matter, it’s easy to assume that when President Obama began addressing national security policy, he accidentally picked up John McCain’s platform instead of his own. Critics suspect Obama is a closet Muslim. But maybe his real secret is that he’s a closet Republican...

The US refused to recognise the new Haitian republic and imposed an embargo that lasted until 1862. Local Haitian leaders were no less predatory than foreign forces, as demonstrated in the truly terrifying reign of Papa and Baby Doc.
