Soldiers not surprised by Fort Hood massacre
"It's basically that the Army has an awesome way of getting you ready for war," he continued. "It gets you in that mindset to go over there and fight, but whenever you come back, they don't have a way of turning that switch off."

"The Shooter Was a Soldier"

The inconvenient truth is the deplorable act committed by Major Hasan cannot be a shock because we knew it was coming; in fact, it was foreseeable, unavoidable, and inevitable to a moral certitude. It takes no leap of imagination to understand this act as a predictable outcome of criminal wars of aggression, torture, and indifference to the slaughter and displacement of foreign peoples under the guise of freedom, democracy, and the market.

If we ask the people who are living the horrors, then maybe what happened at Ft. Hood isn't so shocking at all. What is surprising is that we haven't seen more of the same.

Call Joe Lieberman’s bluff
The Nation
by Robert Kuttner

Following the horrific shootings at the Fort Hood army base in Texas, Connecticut Senator Lieberman pulled a thread from the right-wing blogosphere and called for a congressional inquiry into whether the incident was an act of ‘terrorism.’ Not domestic terrorism, but full-blown terrorism that is comparable to what is seen in the most unstable of warzones. ‘This was an attack on America troops,’ Lieberman chirped on Fox New Sunday. ‘You’ve got to see it as if 12 American troops were killed in Afghanistan.’ But wait! … Is Lieberman serious about making a comparison between what happened at Fort Hood and what happens in Kabul? Not really...

Fear and Loathing in the Wake of Fort Hood
Raul Benoit, Diario La Prensa (Spanish Translation: Ryan Croken): "It should not come as a surprise to us that a US Army psychiatrist, stationed at a military base where soldiers come and go to fight in irrational and pointless wars, [allegedly] killed 13 people and left 30 others wounded, as happened Thursday, November 5, at Fort Hood, Texas. These wars themselves are insane, and the US military practice of plucking people from Hispanic, African-American, other minority and poor white communities to send them off to fight for 'freedom,' offering them the promise of a 'brighter future,' is abusive, offensive and harmful to the health of this nation and this world."
