Iraq accord, U.S. bases perpetuate cycle of stupidity

How’s the Iraq war doing? As wars go, this has become a back-burner war now. It is still the war a majority of Americans love to hate, but we are understandably more worried about our pocketbooks now, and our borders. Besides, the surge, we tell ourselves, is working, is it not? Which kind of lets us off the hook from thinking too much about the war. Meanwhile, a weird kind of codependence has sprung up between the Iraqi government and the Bush administration — the latter doesn’t want to leave Iraq, and the former wants our troops there until 2018. On another note, it makes for some sad commentary that the Democratic-led Congress hasn’t shown much interest in holding hearings to investigate prewar intelligence. It is universally believed that the Iraq war was started and perpetuated by lies, but those who have the power to investigate are basically saying, ‘Let bygones be bygones. Now that we are in Iraq, let’s move forward’...
