Possible Cell Phone Ban In S.A.

Reported by: Kristina De Leon
Email: KristinaDeLeon@woai.com
Last Update: 7:35 am

When you drive through a school zone, you may soon have to turn off your cell phone.

A proposed cell phone ban goes before San Antonio's City Council Wednesday. Council Member Justin Rodriguez proposed the ban, which would require drivers to hang up their phones when they see a school zone sign.

The goal is to prevent accidents and make the roads safer before and after school.

Rodriguez says the ban is necessary for the safety of children.

US Attempt to Shoot Down Satellite Undermines Efforts to Ban Space Weapons, Reduces US Security

China Accuses US of Double Standards Over Satellite Strike

James Randerson and Mark Tran reports for The Guardian UK, "China today accused the US of double standards after the US navy fired a missile to destroy a failed satellite 150 miles above the Pacific. Beijing, which was criticised by the US and others when it shot down one of its own satellites last year, turned the tables on the Bush administration after this morning's space shot."

Experts fear debris isn't the only fallout from satellite shoot-down

"I don't see how other nations don't see this as an anti-satellite test," said Theresa Hitchens, the director of the Washington D.C.-based Center for Defense Information, a centrist national security policy institute. "They'll see it as the weaponization of space."

Stop the “weaponization” of space

Independent Institute
by Mike Moore

03/19/08

Space dominance has not been adopted as U.S. policy. But we are quietly edging toward it. And make no mistake: Such a policy would be regarded by other nations as an unacceptable violation of global norms and a threat to their sovereignty. ‘He who controls space controls the Earth’ is an assertion that began popping up after the Soviet Union launched Sputnik I in 1957. The assertion is widely believed. What would America do if we thought another country were about to place weapons in space?

Rigged Trials at Gitmo

By Ross Tuttle

Secret evidence. Denial of habeas corpus. Evidence obtained by waterboarding. Indefinite detention. The litany of complaints about the legal treatment of prisoners at Guantánamo Bay is long, disturbing and by now familiar. Nonetheless, a new wave of shock and criticism greeted the Pentagon's announcement on February 11 that it was charging six Guantánamo detainees, including alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, with war crimes--and seeking the death penalty for all of them.

Real ID: Security from what, may I ask?

The Price of Liberty
by Doug Newman

02/18/08

Terrorists pose zero threat to our freedom. Terrorism is not a philosophy of government, but a means of venting political grievances. Terrorists control no governments nor command any armies. The 19 9/11 hijackers are — how shall I describe this? — DEAD! You can’t take over a country and force its people to speak Arabic and to pray toward Mecca five times a day WHEN YOU ARE DEAD! However, our government has been hard at work, with our blessing, turning the land of the free into a full-blown police state. While our troops fight and die ‘for our freedom’ in Iraq and Afghanistan, we gladly give up our freedom here at home. Millions of us praise grossly intrusive airport security, warrantless searches and wiretaps, no-knock raids, tasering, arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, guilt without trial, torture and martial law as necessary for our ‘protection.’ Protection from what?

Work a Day for Freedom!

Truthout contributor David Bacon says, "The recent publication of 'No Easy Victories!,' a book about the history of the anti-apartheid movement in the United States, has provoked a larger discussion of that movement's long and radical history. In the San Francisco Bay Area, activity in solidarity with the liberation struggle in southern Africa goes back to the 1930s, with especially deep roots in the African-American community."
