Our Help is needed now to provide paper ballots in November 2008
PLEASE FORWARD:
Subject: Our Help is needed now to get HR5036 out of the House Admin Cmte
Everyone,
We basically need the House Administration Committee to expeditiously take some action to move the "Emergency Assistance for Secure Elections Act of 2008" bill which funds verifiable pre-printed paper ballots and manual election audits to any jurisdiction who wants them in time for November 2008.
Summary of HR5036: http://electionarchive.org/ucvInfo/US/legislation/SummaryFlyer5036.pdf
Full bill text: http://electionarchive.org/ucvInfo/US/legislation/HOLT_EMER2008FINAL_xml.pdf
The bill (nicknamed the "Emergency Paper Ballot Bill") is in the hands of House leadership and House Admin leadership.
Letting them know how important it is to you would be helpful -- Thanks!

(Remember Representative Ehlers recently sponsored an election "audit" bill that did not require any voter verified paper ballot records!)
House Leadership http://democraticleader.house.gov/
Steny Hoyer, Majority Leader, has been an invisible e-ballot (DRE voting machine) supporter along with several disability rights groups who seem not to understand that DREs threaten the voting rights of all voters, including voters with disabilities. When I have tried to speak to Hoyer's staffer who handles election legislation, my calls have not been returned - so leave a message or be persistent. Hoyer is the House Majority Leader who insisted on amending the more comprehensive election reform legislation HR811 to weaken its ability to ensure election integrity. Please help us urge Representative Steny Hoyer to allow HR5036 to go to the floor for a vote - without any amendments to weaken its provisions.
Contact Hoyer's office and try to talk with or leave a message for Hoyer's staffer in charge of overseeing election legislation.
We need HR5036 passed out of committee without any changes, with the possible exception of a change to offer funding to replace ANY DREs, even those with paper trails as well as the funding to replace paperless DREs. CO, CA, FL, OH, IA, and many other states trying to scrap their DREs would then be eligible for funding.
We do not want Steny Hoyer to amend HR5036 to permit replacing paperless DREs with paper-roll DREs because we know that it can be impossible for voters to produce a true verified record of their ballots with a DRE VVPT printer despite a voter's best efforts, etc.
We want HR5036 passed with a favorable recommendation out of committee "as is".
