Draft guidelines prepared by the Telecom Engineering Centre, which is under the department of telecommunications (DoT), say the antennae used by telecom operators radiate radio-frequency electromagnetic waves, which heat up tissues and may harm people.

Amidst a worldwide debate among the scientific community over the health hazards posed by prolonged use of cellular phones, The Indian Department of Telecom is examining a proposal to discourage the use of mobile phones by children under the age of 16 years.
An expert’s team at the Telecom Engineering Centre, a federal agency, has come up with draft guidelines suggesting that in order to minimise health risk through radiation children below 16 years should not be allowed to use cellular phones.

NEW DELHI: Concerned over health hazards, government is considering norms that suggest taking precautionary steps to minimise risks associated with use of mobile phones. The draft guidelines prepared by the Telecom Engineering Centre and under consideration of the department of telecom (DoT) have suggested, among other things, that children below 16 years should be discouraged from using cell phones.
