Stop the Spread of Cypress Mulch
This week, the Save Our Cypress Coalition kicked off our a campaign to Save Our Cypress! The GRN, the Sierra Club, the Atchafalaya Basinkeeper, the Louisiana Audubon Council and others, and concerned citizens throughout the country are asking Wal-Mart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s to stop selling cypress mulch. Cypress swamps provide vital protection from hurricanes and important habitat for wildlife, including threatened and endangered species. The cypress mulch industry, however, has become an imminent threat to these natural areas.
The campaign kickoff got good regional coverage, you can read a couple of the stories below: http://www.news-journalonline.com/NewsJournalOnline/News/Enviro/envENV02111606.htm http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/4662211.html
Cypress has been in the news a lot this week, actually. The Times-Picayune News Section uncovered the fact that the Dept. of Forestry miscalculated the amount of cypress being harvested annually. Turns out it’s fifteen times more than they previously reported, which means more trees are being lost to logging than any other causes. Just today, the Editorial Staff of the T-P urged action at the state level to save our cypress.
