McCain’s attack on liberty

Campaign For Liberty
by Chuck Baldwin

Anyone paying attention knows that John McCain has been a Big-Government Globalist Neocon (BGGN) for virtually his entire senatorial career. As with many BGGNs hiding out in the Republican Party, McCain likes to talk about smaller government, but his track record is littered with the promotion of one big government program after another. But, what else would one expect from a member of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR)?

New Dodd Bill Won't Stop Another Meltdown, "Epidemic" of Wall Street Fraud

Art Levine, Truthout: "The political jousting since Sen. Chris Dodd proposed new financial reforms on Monday seems at first to be just another Washington ideological rift: liberals favoring regulating an industry, and Big Business and Republicans opposing it. With the Chamber of Commerce willing to spend $3 million to defeat Dodd's bill, plus $50 million in a broad-based campaign targeting dozens of vulnerable Democrats, some liberals doubtless feel it must surely be a powerful blow against the excesses of the financial industry."

Fox Business News

Washington’s ruling class must believe that, like 5-year-olds, if you cover your ears and repeat ‘I can’t hear you,’ all problems go away. On the one-year anniversary of the $787 billion stimulus scheme last month, Vice President Joe Biden said taxpayers had ‘gotten their money’s worth’ from the massive waste of tax dollars. Biden said the program, now a year old, was designed to be implemented in two stages, saying ‘we’ve only been halfway through the act.’ Or maybe we’ve driven off a cliff and are halfway to the bottom. Tom Schatz, president of Citizens Against Government Waste, is also skeptical...

The short game

The American Prospect
by Tim Fernholz

03/16/10

In the prologue to The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, Michael Lewis explains that he envisioned his first and perhaps most famous work, Liar’s Poker, as a grim obituary for an industry that rewarded inexperience and greed. However, the byzantine banking industry continued to flourish, and young readers wrote Lewis to ask how they, too, could get into the game. His disappointment is palpable. In his new book, he may have replicated the mistake of glorifying a troubled industry. The premise of the book is simple: A few investors had the foresight to see that the sub-prime-mortgage loans at the heart of a vast bubble in the bond markets were destined to default and made fortunes betting against them. The Big Short, then, is the story of those counter-investors and in turn, an illustration of what was (and is) wrong on Wall Street...

Carte blanche for the banksters

CounterPunch
by Mike Whitney

03/17/10

Housing is still on the rocks and prices are headed lower. Master illusionist Ben Bernanke has managed to engineer a modest 7-month uptick in sales, but the fairydust is set to wear off later this month when the Fed stops purchasing mortgage-backed securities (MBS). When the program ends, long-term interest rates will creep higher and sales will begin to flag. The objective of Bernanke’s $1.25 trillion quantitative easing program was to transfer the banks’ toxic assets onto the Fed’s balance sheet. Having achieved that goal, Bernanke will now have to find a way to unload those same assets onto the public. Freddie and Fannie, which have already been used as a government-backed off-balance-sheet dumping ground, appear to be the most likely candidates...

The Golden Age for crony capitalism

Fox Business News
by John Stossel

Today’s Wall Street Journal points out that this is the ‘Golden Age’ for lobbyists: [The National Journal] looked at 514 tax forms between 2007 and 2009 and found that no fewer than 89 executives for trade groups earned more than $1 million. That’s a 30% increase from the 2008 survey. Perhaps you recall the now-distant promise of a Presidential candidate who said he would reduce the influence of lobbyists. Who was that guy? That guy made all sorts of promises. But when politicians’ policies expand the scope of government, that of course further empowers those evil lobbyists. When government dishes out money and favors, businesses and unions will lobby for a cut. That’s what I call ‘crony capitalism’...

The Lies of Karl Rove

Melvin A. Goodman, Truthout: "Joseph Goebbels, the leading propagandist of the Third Reich, believed in the power of the lie; the greater the lie, the greater the power. Goebbels would have loved Karl Rove's 'Courage and Consequences: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight,' a pastiche of lies, fabrications and distortions designed to rehabilitate the record of the Bush-Cheney years. There are too many lies to treat in this one column, but his greatest lie is that the Bush administration would not have invaded Iraq if it had known there were no weapons of mass destruction (WMD) there."

The ugly history of “Christian” America

Between the arrival of Columbus in the West Indies and the American Revolution there were numerous colonies, which tended to differ from one another. It was during this period that Christianity, or more precisely, specific strains of Christianity, did hold political power. If ever there was a time when there was a ‘Christian America’ this was it. It is also a time that most Americans know nothing about. Perhaps because it was a very ugly period in American history, which contradicts the rosy view of America held by most citizens today...

T. Christian Miller, ProPublica, Mark Hosenball and Ron Moreau, Newsweek: "Mohammad Moqim watches in despair as his men struggle with their AK-47 automatic rifles, doing their best to hit man-size targets 50 meters away. A few of the police trainees lying prone in the mud are decent shots, but the rest shoot clumsily, and fumble as they try to reload their weapons. The Afghan National Police (ANP) captain sighs as he dismisses one group of trainees and orders 25 more to take their places on the firing line. 'We are still at zero,' says Captain Moqim, 35, an eight-year veteran of the force. 'They don't listen, are undisciplined, and will never be real policemen.'"

Policing Afghanistan: How Afghan Police Training Became a Train Wreck

Pratap Chatterjee, TomDispatch.com: "The Pentagon faces a tough choice: Should it award a new contract to Xe (formerly Blackwater), a company made infamous when its employees killed 17 Iraqis in Baghdad in 2007, or to DynCorp, a company made infamous in Bosnia in 1999 when some of its employees were caught trafficking young girls for sex?"

The American Dream Has Moved Abroad

Why I'm Voting 'Yes'

By Dennis Kucinich

I have spent my life struggling for the rights of working class people and for health care. I grew up understanding first hand what it meant for families who did not get access to needed care. I lived in 21 different places by the time I was 17, including in a couple of cars. I understand the connection between poverty and poor health care.

An Absence of Class

By Bob Herbert

A group of lowlifes at a Tea Party rally in Columbus, Ohio, last week taunted and humiliated a man who was sitting on the ground with a sign that said he had Parkinson's disease. The disgusting behavior was captured on a widely circulated videotape. One of the Tea Party protesters leaned over the man and sneered: "If you're looking for a handout, you're in the wrong end of town."

Five Yards and a Cloud of Dust

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "Last week, Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) made it clear to any and all that he was going to vote 'No' on the health care reform package currently being considered by the House. His argument was simple, and on many levels, entirely correct: the current bill is half a loaf, does not contain any kind of public option and is a big, fat giveaway to the insurance and pharmaceutical industries."

Buzzkill at the Tea Party

AntiWar.Com
by Kelley B. Vlahos

03/23/10

As the 2010 campaign season hits full-throttle, as the 2012 presidential contest looms ever closer, the popular Tea Party Movement is at risk of being absorbed into the GOP like the Borg. It will be a subtle takeover, mind you, as more Republican candidates seemingly embrace the charge of the neo-liberty cause, while more Tea Partiers than not come to the conclusion that getting Republicans elected is more important (and easier) than pushing for a third-party solution. This marriage will not be difficult, as they have more in common with each other than with the renegade libertarian minority among the ranks...

Now we’ll find out if the Tea Party movement is real

J. Neil Schulman @ Rational Review
by J. Neil Schulman

03/23/10

For most of my lifetime any opposition to the federal income tax has been a fringe movement — sometimes on the left, as a war protest, sometimes on the right, by objectors like Irwin Schiff who make various constitutional arguments against the income tax that federal courts have regularly dismissed as not only absurd, but a trial on the court’s patience. But I can’t remember a time when opposition to the federal income tax has been widespread enough to constitute a popular movement. The Tea Party won’t prove anything by supporting Republican candidates who would raise your taxes in a heartbeat if it gave them power to punish abortions — or keep out illegal Mexicans, or put more cops on the street. The proof would be protests and resistance against the tyrannical power of the federal government to control your behavior through its power to tax you...

9/11 Reconstruction: Mental Before Physical

By Joel S. Hirschhorn

We need Congress to authorize and fund a new 9/11 investigation. The highly fragmented 9/11 truth movement must unite behind a political strategy to make this happen. The only reason to fear a new investigation is the likely unsettling finding that, indeed, the US government was a lot more than incompetent and negligent.

Idaho nullifies ObamaCare in advance

From guns to healthcare, “states’ rights” gain ground
New York Times

03/17/10

Whether it’s a correctly called a movement, a backlash, or political theater, state declarations of their rights [sic] — or in some cases denunciations of federal authority, amounting to the same thing — are on a roll. Governor Mike Rounds of South Dakota, a Republican, signed a bill into law Friday declaring that the federal regulation of firearms is invalid if a weapon is made and used in South Dakota. On Thursday, Wyoming’s governor, Dave Freudenthal, a Democrat, signed a similar bill for that state. The same day, Oklahoma’s House of Representatives approved a resolution that Oklahomans should be able to vote on a state constitutional amendment allowing them to opt out of the federal healthcare overhaul...

US states delay tax refunds

The Free Liberal
by Fred E. Foldvary

03/17/10

Several U.S. states are depleted of funds, and are not paying their bills. They are delaying paying back tax refunds. Over 40 of the states have deficits and are unable to pay their bills promptly. In some states, cutbacks on staff are contributing to delays. The delays are not just a problem for those who are waiting for their refunds. Many of the states have to pay interest on late refunds after the closing date. But paying wages and debt service take priority over the refunds. Taxpayers are last in line...

Our future under Obamacare
Cato Institute

The bill will cost more than advertised. It won’t be long before Congress is shocked — shocked! — to discover that health-care reform is going to cost a lot more than expected. It’s not just the budgetary gimmicks that Democrats have been employing to hide the bill’s true cost. It’s also that government programs — and government health-care programs in particular — almost always end up exceeding their cost estimates. For example, when Medicare was instituted in 1965, it was estimated that the cost of Medicare Part A would be $9 billion by 1990. In actuality, it was seven times higher — $67 billion. Similarly, in 1987, Medicaid’s special hospitals subsidy was projected to cost $100 million annually by 1992, just five years later; it actually cost $11 billion, more than 100 times as much...

Is fed power now unlimited?

Christian Science Monitor
by Roger Pilon

04/12/10

With stormy midterm elections just ahead, and much of President Obama’s agenda still undone, the last thing congressional Democrats needed is the distraction of a difficult and protracted Supreme Court confirmation battle. Yet that’s likely what’s in store after Friday’s announcement that Justice John Paul Stevens, the court’s liberal lion, is stepping down in late June. The party’s base, already disappointed with Mr. Obama, will doubtless press the president for a liberal replacement. But with the growing ‘tea party’ movement raising long-ignored constitutional issues, even a moderate nominee will face questions congressional Democrats would rather leave buried. Chief among those is that most basic question, brought to the fore by ‘ObamaCare’: Are there any longer any constitutional limits on federal power?
