A United Nations report on the existence of secret detention facilities in countries around the world puts most of the blame on the US and its Central Intelligence Agency.

CounterPunch
by Saul Landau and Nelson P. Valdes

03/05/10)

President Obama called his $3.8-trillion budget a big step in restoring America’s economic health. Last year he promoted TARP, the Troubled Assets Relief Program to bail out the financial sector at a mere $700 billion. Anyone — even billionaire bankers — can make mistakes that wreak ruin on the rest of us! Obama also declared as ‘untouchable’ the Pentagon budget of $1.5 trillion (including hidden costs in other government branches), which dwarfs the rescue package for the financial oligarchs. Both payouts, however, used the same logic: Congress taking from the have-nots and giving it to the have-mores. Indeed, the economic, political and military potentates depend on the federal budget to transfer taxpayer resources to them...

ACLU ad calls Obama “Bushlike”

Fox News

03/07/10

The possibility that President Obama could send the self-professed mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks to a military tribunal has earned him the highest insult from the left — that he’s another George W. Bush. A full-page ad in Sunday’s New York Times left no doubt as to how the American Civil Liberties Union feels about the possibility of the president reversing the decision to send Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and his alleged co-conspirators to civilian court. ‘What will it be Mr. President?’ the ad asks in boldfaced type. ‘Change or more of the Same?’ In the middle of those words are four photos that show Obama’s face morphing into Bush’s...

The trial of Azzam the American

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

03/08/10

If it’s confirmed, the reported arrest of Adam Gadahn, a.k.a. ‘Azzam the American,’ al-Qaeda’s top propagandist — and an American citizen — is going to present the Obama administration with more problems in a sensitive area: its botching of the question of how to deal with captives in the ‘war on terrorism,’ especially high-ranking terrorist operatives. The constantly shifting plans for the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the Guantanamo quagmire, and now this. The news of Gadahn’s capture is barely an hour old as I write this, and already the blogs are raising the question of whether he should be put to death...

Ex-spy chief: US misled allies over detainees

Austin American-Statesman

03/09/10

United States intelligence agencies misled key allies, including Britain, about its mistreatment of suspected terrorists, the former head of the country’s domestic spy agency, MI5, said Tuesday. Eliza Manningham-Buller, who retired in 2007 and is now a member of the House of Lords, said the U.S. deliberately suppressed details of its harsh handling of some detainees, including accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.
