The get out of jail free card for torture

by John Sifton

The facts of [Gul] Rahman’s death suggest at least a negligent homicide, but as AP reports, it appears no one was ever punished for Rahman’s death. Why not? The answer may lie with an obscure word in a little-noticed footnote in a recently declassified memo sent to a Department of Justice Office of Professional Responsibility. Page 29, Footnote 28 of the memo, submitted in 2009 by lawyers for former administration lawyer Jay Bybee, refers to a ‘declination memorandum prepared by the CIA’s Counterterrorism Section regarding the death of Gul Rahman’...

Land of the Free?

Campaign For Liberty
by Michael Beitler

During the War of 1812, Francis Scott Key wrote a song about a star-spangled banner waving over the land of the free. Is this land still free? Are you free to earn a living as you see fit? More and more jobs now require a license to practice. The licensing board, made up of your would-be competitors, can block your entry because they better connected politically than you are...

Obama “delivering” for financial institutions

Raw Story

Obama is delivering, but only for financial institutions. The nature of the current recession has made it clear to most Americans that a new wave of financial reforms is necessary to prevent another crash. MIT professor Noam Chomsky alleged that the Democratic establishment’s reluctance to reestablish post-Depression type regulations is reflective of the systemic constraints on policy in America’s ‘dysfunctional democracy.’ Chomsky, who has written many books detailing the perils of corporate influence in politics, said in an interview that the president and his party are hamstrung by fears that banks will punish them if they implement policies that do not satisfy the industry’s desires...

Break up the banks

Cato Institute
by Arnold Kling

Big banks are bad for free markets. Far from being engines of free enterprise, they are conducive to what might be called ‘crony capitalism,’ ‘corporatism,’ or, in Jonah Goldberg’s provocative phrase, ‘liberal fascism.’ There is a free-market case for breaking up large financial institutions: that our big banks are the product, not of economics, but of politics...

How Bush Tried to Stop Predatory Lending

Bush acted as a pitchman for the financial industry to attract a larger pool of applicants to keep the securitization flywheel running at full-throttle. It didn't matter to him that the wave of foreclosures would end up devastating black and Latino communities across the country.

Memo reveals successful GOP plot to co-opt, corrupt tea party movement

Just days after the first widespread tea party demonstrators hit the streets a year ago Thursday, Joe Wierzbicki, a Republican political consultant with the Sacramento firm Russo Marsh + Rogers, made a proposal to his colleagues that he said could ‘give a boost to our PAC and position us as a growing force/leading force as the 2010 elections come into focus.’ The proposal, obtained by POLITICO, was for a nationwide tea party bus tour, to be called the Tea Party Express, which over the past seven months has become among the most identifiable brands of the tea party movement...

The Great Tea Party Cash-In

The American Conservative
by Sean Scallon

It’s not surprising that the Powers that Be would prey upon the Tea Partiers. For one thing, the establishment party found itself without much of an activist base after eight years of Bush II. What is referred to as the ‘religious right’ is a spent force, other groups are more into their own single issues and still others are made up more of email lists and fundraisers rather than flesh and blood door-to-door persons. The Tea Parties were Godsend to them, not because of bodies in the street but names and credit cards numbers they could exploit. Indeed, there was a reason why so many rightists were looking forward to the Obama Presidency, they were back in business again. As they will tell you (and as the netroots are currently finding out) it’s a lot harder to fire people up when your gang runs the show...

Torture Diaries, Drawings and the Special Prosecutor

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "Attorneys defending Abu Zubaydah, a Guantanamo prisoner designated as the first 'high-value' detainee by the Bush administration, have finally gained access to three volumes of diaries he wrote while he was in the custody of the CIA and brutally tortured by agency interrogators and contractors at a secret 'black site' prison."

US Recants Claims on "High-Value" Detainee Abu Zubaydah

Jason Leopold, Truthout: "The Justice Department has quietly recanted nearly every major claim the Bush administration had made about 'high-value' detainee Abu Zubaydah, a Guantanamo prisoner who at one time was said to have planned the 9/11 attacks and was the No. 2 and 3 person in al-Qaeda. Additionally, Justice has backed away from claims intelligence officials working in the Clinton administration had also leveled against Zubaydah, specifically, that he was directly involved in the planning of the 1998 embassy bombings in East Africa as well as the 'Millennium' bomb plot in Los Angeles."

Psychologists Notes May Indicate Zubaydah Torture Experimentation

Jeffrey Kaye, Truthout: "One interesting nugget found in newly released CIA documents related to the destruction of 92 torture tapes concerns the unreported existence of psychologist's notes as a standard part of the interrogation protocol," which may indicate that high-value detainee Abu Zubadyah was the subject of human experimentation.

Abu Zubaydah: Tortured for nothing

Future of Freedom Foundation
by Andy Worthington

The story of Abu Zubaydah — a Saudi-born Palestinian whose real name is Zayn al-Abidin Muhammad Husayn — has always been absolutely central to the ‘war on terror.’ Seized in a house raid in Faisalabad, Pakistan, on March 28, 2002, he was immediately touted as ‘al-Qaeda’s chief of operations and top recruiter,’ who would be able to ‘provide the names of terrorists around the world and which targets they planned to hit.’ He then pretty much vanished off the face of the earth for four and a half years...
