Iraq Wants U.S. to Compromise More on Security Deals

Iraq is resisting U.S. proposals for a pair of new bilateral security agreements, saying it expects Washington to compromise on "sensitive issues," including the right to imprison Iraqi citizens unilaterally, Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said Monday.

Clueless in America

By Bob Herbert

Ignorance in the United States is not just bliss, it's widespread. A recent survey of teenagers by the education advocacy group Common Core found that a quarter could not identify Adolf Hitler, a third did not know that the Bill of Rights guaranteed freedom of speech and religion, and fewer than half knew that the Civil War took place between 1850 and 1900.

Bush Has A Sneering Contempt For The Law

Bruce Fein and former United States Congressman Bob Barr

On his say so alone he can identify anyone in the United States as creating a "significant risk of undermining reconstruction program in Iraq, or political reform by creating a risk that an act of violence might be committed." And when he identifies you, he doesn't inform you. But you are instantly subjected to a financial death penalty. All your assets are frozen; no one then can do any business with you.

Out of the Way, Peasants

By Steven Greenhut

Government officials are zealous about dealing with problems caused by average citizens, but they are far less interested in dealing with the excesses of fellow members of the privileged, government elite. There are rules for "us" and rules for "them" - us being the subjects and them being the rulers. Feel free to pound the table in anger now!

White House Challenges Release of Visitor Logs

Matt Apuzzo writes for The Associated Press: "A federal appeals court sought compromise yesterday between a liberal group demanding the names of White House visitors and the Bush administration, which says releasing the names would erode the president's power. If released, the documents would show how often prominent religious conservatives visited the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney's residence, allowing a glimpse into how much influence they exerted on government policy."

Jump the Chasm: Are You an EcoDaredevil?

Wallace J. Nichols, writing for Truthout, conveys his inspiration to take immediate action in response to global warming: "Today, we face [a] serious crises - loss of biodiversity, a warming planet, collapsing fisheries, looming food and water shortages, and pollution in every corner of the globe. Scientists forecast a '2050 Scenario' in which Earth is hotter, dirtier and overcrowded with nine billion people who are left to wage wars for what little remains."

A Developer, His Deals and His Ties to McCain

David D. Kirkpatrick and Jim Rutenberg, of The New York Times, write: "When Mr. Diamond wanted to buy land at the base, Fort Ord, Mr. McCain assigned an aide who set up a meeting at the Pentagon and later stepped in again to help speed up the sale, according to people involved and a deposition Mr. Diamond gave for a related lawsuit. When he appealed to a nearby city for the right to develop other property at the former base, Mr. Diamond submitted Mr. McCain’s endorsement as 'a close personal friend.'"

Why More Food Is Not the Answer

Writing for Truthout, Kelpie Wilson explains: "With food riots across the globe in the news, the immediate cause of food shortages is simply this: grain prices have doubled over the last year and poor people can no longer afford to buy enough food. There is no one single cause for the price rise; it is a combination of supply and demand."

The fiscal consequences of Bush

Financial Times
by Clive Crook

Competition for ‘most damaging legacy of the Bush administration’ is lively. Iraq is the front-runner, of course, but bear in mind the wreckage of fiscal policy — although to use that term is to imply that the US even has a fiscal policy, when it does not. It would be more accurate to talk of fiscal consequences or fiscal footprint (an apt metaphor) than to imply anything as deliberate as ‘policy’... [free registration required]

Dangerously counterproductive war on terror

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

At the passing of the 25th anniversary of the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut, Lebanon — the first large suicide bombing to target Americans — the time is right to ask the perennial question: has the Bush administration’s ‘war on terror’ since 9/11 made Americans safer? Although the Bush administration regularly boasts that its war on terror has been effective because no large terrorists attacks on U.S. soil have occurred since 9/11, such terrorism in North America has historically been a rare event. It’s like bragging that efforts to prevent lightning strikes have succeeded because a dwelling has not been struck or burned...

For Earth Day, Protest Home Depot's Complicity in Destruction of Patagonian Wilderness by Proposed Chilean Dams

By Forests.org, project of Ecological Internet //forests.org/ April 21, 2008

TAKE ACTION Patagonia's wild rivers to be dammed, destroying ancient temperate forests, for 50 years of electricity; please let supposedly environmentally responsible Home Depot know they should not be doing business with the project's primary Chilean advocate.

One of Chile's last true pristine and intact wildernesses is to be dammed and logged to provide hydroelectricity. The dams -- two on the Baker River and three on the Pascua River -- would irretrievably damage Patagonia, one of the Earth's wildest and most beautiful places. The HidroAysén project will flood river valleys containing several thousand hectares of ancient primary forests. The project's transmission line would require extensive clearcutting of additional pristine Chilean native forests, clearing more than a 1,500-mile swath that will impact fourteen national parks and wilderness reserves.

Shockingly, the main Chilean project proponent -- the Matte Group -- does extensive business with U.S. mega-corp Home Depot, broadly perceived as being "green". In consultation with International Rivers, Ecological Internet is working to get the Matte Group to withdraw from the project by highlighting their business interests with Home Depot. Please challenge Home Depot to live up to their green image on Earth Day 2008, and refuse to participate in the greenwashing of Patagonian wild river and ancient forest destruction. Insist Home Depot cease doing business with Matte until they withdraw from HidroAysén.
