McCain's Miserable Record on Hurricane Katrina

Jonathan Stein writes for Mother Jones: "John McCain's Time for Action tour arrived in New Orleans Thursday, where McCain toured the hurricane-damaged 9th Ward and criticized both the Bush Administration and Congress for its handling of the disaster. Lamenting the pace of recovery, McCain said, 'I want to assure you it will never happen again in this country. You have my commitment and my promise.'"

Agriculture is once again recognized as a strategic economic sector, Frederic Lemaitre argues in Le Monde. He details some of the ways rich and poor countries will need to change their policies and reorient their investments in consequence.

The War on Terror Feeding Frenzy

Ian S. Lustick writes for The Hill: "Nearly seven years after Sept. 11, 2001, what accounts for the vast discrepancy between the terrorist threat facing America and the scale of our response? Why, absent any evidence of a serious domestic terror threat, is the War on Terror so enormous, so all-encompassing, and still expanding?"

The War on Terror feeding frenzy

Intellectual Conservative
by Ian S. Lustick

Nearly seven years after September 11, 2001, what accounts for the vast discrepancy between the terrorist threat facing America and the scale of our response? Why, absent any evidence of a serious domestic terror threat, is the War on Terror so enormous, so all-encompassing, and still expanding? The fundamental answer is that al Qaeda’s most important accomplishment was not to hijack our planes, but to hijack our political system. For a multitude of politicians, interest groups, professional associations, corporations, media organizations, universities, local and state governments and federal agency officials, the War on Terror is now a major profit center, a funding bonanza, and a set of slogans and sound bites to be inserted into budget, project, grant and contract proposals. For the country as a whole, however, it has become a maelstrom of waste and worry that distracts us from more serious problems...

Gauweiler kündigt Verfassungsklage gegen EU-Vertrag an

Manufacturing Consent For An Attack On Iran:

Britons kidnapped in Iraq are 'held by Iran'

Five British hostages who were kidnapped in Iraq almost a year ago are being held inside Iran by Revolutionary Guards, according to two separate sources in the Middle East and London.

US warns Iran of retaliation over Iraq action

America's top military officer has ratcheted up the pressure on Iran by issuing an unusual public warning that the Pentagon is planning for "potential military courses of action".

Iranian video 'shows no threat to US navy'

Iran has released a video which is claimed to show that its boats did not threaten US navy vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, as has been claimed by the Americans.

In war, some facts less factual

When George H. W. Bush ordered American forces to the Persian Gulf - to reverse Iraq's August 1990 invasion of Kuwait - part of the administration case was that an Iraqi juggernaut was also threatening to roll into Saudi Arabia.

Clear Iranian role in Baghdad violence: military

"We have found many Iranian-made weapons -- Katyusha and Grad rockets, and smart roadside bombs and smart bombs. We have also seized some documents and identified some people," Atta said, without elaborating.

Iran dismisses allegations over Iraq meddling, arms supply

Iran on Monday dismissed as "illusive allegations" made by certain Iraqi and US officials over arms supply to Iraqi insurgents.

Is war with Iran imminent?

by Justin Raimondo

The shooting has already started in the Persian Gulf — and chances are we’ll be at war with Iran before President Bush’s term is up. An American ship under contract with the U.S. Navy — the Western Venture — claims it was in international waters when Iranian speedboats approached and failed to answer radio calls. Shots were fired on the American side. Iran denies the whole thing. Yet you’ll recall that in the last incident, involving the capture of British sailors, the story about being in international waters was the same — except, it turns out, they weren’t in international waters, but in disputed waters, just as we speculated in this space. There’s no reason to expect anything different this time. Clearly, the U.S. and Britain are trying to trigger a new conflict with the most brazen provocations, and they don’t really care how it happens — only that it does...

IAEA Slams US On Syria Bombing

US Rebuked Over Syria Nuclear Case

By Al Jazeera and agencies

The head of the UN nuclear monitoring agency has criticised the US for withholding intelligence information that it says showed the construction of a nuclear reactor in Syria. Mohamed ElBaradei, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Friday also hit out at Israel for bombing the site before inspectors could investigate.

Food Riots Erupt Worldwide

Anuradha Mittal writes for AlterNet, "Over the last few decades, the United States, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have used their leverage to impose devastating policies on developing countries. By requiring countries to open up their agriculture market to giant multinational companies, by insisting that countries dismantle their marketing boards and by persuading them to specialize in exportable cash crops such as coffee, cocoa, cotton and even flowers, they have driven the poorest countries into a downward spiral."

It was all part of President Bush's government-wide plan to reduce costs by inviting contractors to bid on about 425,000 federal jobs that could be considered 'commercial' in nature."

Democrats May Push $172 Billion for War

Truthout's Maya Schenwar reports, "While America is busy deciding which of the Democratic candidates is most likely to end the war, Congress is debating behind closed doors how much of a priority ending the war should be. America’s apartheid mentality toward the world

Christian Science Monitor
by Helena Cobban

What kind of relationship do Americans want to build with the world’s 6 billion other people in the years ahead? This question is urgent, since the past seven years have seen an unprecedented drop in our country’s global favorability rating. In today’s hyper-connected world, that has huge consequences for Washington’s ability to protect American interests. To fix this problem, many experts -– and even the presidential candidates -– are promoting agendas to rebuild America’s position of world leadership. They are right to try to repair our image abroad. But their focus on ‘American leadership’ is misplaced. A smarter approach would be for us to build a new relationship with the world that embraces the key principles of human equality and mutual respect among all peoples. Starting to see themselves as ‘merely’ equal to everyone else may seem slightly scary to some Americans. But history should assure them...

Lesen Sie dazu unsere Pressemitteilung:
