Filibuster Remains a Possibility for Mukasey

Keith Perine and Seth Stern, reporting for Congressional Quarterly, write, "Michael Mukasey appears headed for confirmation as attorney general before Thanksgiving, but Senate Democratic leaders are leaving open the possibility that there might be an attempt to filibuster the nomination."

Skepticism Greets New US Africa Command

The Associated Press reports: "Just a few years ago, the US military was rarely seen in the oil-rich waters of West Africa's Gulf of Guinea. This year, it plans to be there every day. The strategic importance of Africa and its natural resources is on the rise, and the Defense Department last month created a new unified US military command for the continent called Africom."

Judge Allows Abu Ghraib Lawsuit Against Contractor

Josh White reports for The Washington Post, "A federal judge in Washington ruled yesterday that a civil lawsuit alleging abuse and torture at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq can go forward against a US military contractor, setting the stage for what could be the first case in a US civilian court to weigh accountability for the notorious abuses in 2003."

Chuck Schumer's Senate

Truthout's Executive Director Marc Ash writes: "On the day that Senator Charles Schumer used his vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee to all but assure that George W. Bush's latest pick, Michael B. Mukasey for attorney general, would be confirmed, The New York Times obliged him by publishing - in a featured Op-Ed - his reasons for doing so. The Times did not see fit to publicize any other senator's thoughts on the matter. That is fitting, because the only voice that mattered in the end was Chuck Schumer's."

Democrats Hit Out at Mukasey's Torture Pledge

Manu Raju reports for The Hill, "Senate Democrats on Tuesday pilloried Attorney General-nominee Michael Mukasey for his assurances to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) that he would enforce a law to prohibit waterboarding if Congress were to enact such a measure."

7. November 2007

Herausforderung an Politik

Is Hillary Clinton a corporate stooge?

Mother Jones
by Jonathan Stein

11/05/07

In his second appearance of the day at the town civic center in Waverly (pop. 8,968; flag count: one giant and two large American flags), [John] Edwards offered this, ‘The presidential candidate who has raised the most money from Washington lobbyists is not a Republican. It’s a Democrat. The candidate who has raised the most money from the health industry — insurance companies and drug companies — is not a Republican. It is a Democrat. … And the candidate who has raised the most money from the defense industry, is not a Republican. It is a Democrat. And all those descriptions fit the same candidate. They’re all Senator Clinton.’ That’s the dominant angle of attack Edwards uses on the Democratic frontrunner, who’s recent stumbles perhaps emboldens him to continue on the offensive...

Democratic majority meaningless once again

Boston Globe
by Derrick Z. Jackson

11/06/07

Evidence of a Democratic majority in Congress keeps fading away. The party rode antiwar sentiment back into leadership of the House and Senate a year ago, but we are no closer to withdrawal. And now we have the nomination of Michael Mukasey for attorney general. In his Senate confirmation hearings, Mukasey refused to say whether he thought interrogation methods such as the simulation of drowning, known as waterboarding, should be considered torture. Showing fairly shallow knowledge for the next standard-bearer of justice, he said, ‘I don’t know what’s involved in the technique. If waterboarding is torture, torture is not constitutional’...

On the path to barbarity

Guardian [UK]
by John Laughland

11/06/07

Arguments in favour of the legalisation of torture have not lost their capacity to shock. The fact that US attorneys-general and the senior legal adviser at the state department have said they are in favour of it seems proof to many of America’s slide into barbarism. In reality, however, their pro-torture arguments are no different from the claims made in favour of ‘humanitarian war’ and of other forms of military intervention — arguments that, unfortunately, have become increasingly popular since the end of the cold war...

Western Hunger for Biofuels Causing Starvation in the Poor World

The Guardian UK's George Monbiot says, "Even the International Monetary Fund, always ready to immolate the poor on the altar of business, now warns that using food to produce biofuels "might further strain already tight supplies of arable land and water all over the world, thereby pushing food prices up even further." This week, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization will announce the lowest global food reserves in 25 years, threatening what it calls "a very serious crisis." Even when the price of food was low, 850 million people went hungry because they could not afford to buy it. With every increment in the price of flour or grain, several million more are pushed below the breadline."

Central bankers see more pain for U.S. economy

The worst crisis I've seen in 30 years

After more than 15 years of extraordinarily benevolent economic conditions worldwide - cheap oil, cheap money, growing trade, the Asia boom, rising house prices - things are unravelling at bewildering speed. The system might be able to handle one shock; it is undoubtedly too fragile to handle so many simultaneously.
