Industries Paid for Top Regulators' Travel

Elizabeth Williamson, reporting for The Washington Post, writes: "The chief of the Consumer Product Safety Commission and her predecessor have taken dozens of trips at the expense of the toy, appliance and children's furniture industries and others they regulate, according to internal records obtained by The Washington Post. Some of the trips were sponsored by lobbying groups and lawyers representing the makers of products linked to consumer hazards."

Schäuble will Geheimdienstinformationen stärker nutzen

Phone mast plan gets go-ahead

By Lois Avery

MOBILE phone giant Orange has been given permission to put up a mast in Box to avoid the costs of an appeal.

The issue was discussed at a meeting of the Development Control Committee on Wednesday evening and councillors decided to give the mast the go-ahead.

The decision comes after the council received 11 letters of objection to the proposals from people living near by.

Orwell ante portas?

2. November 2007

What Hillary won’t say about torture

Salon
by Mark Benjamin

11/02/07

The first fusillade at Hillary Clinton during the Democrats’ feisty debate on Tuesday night came, as expected, from Barack Obama. But it included an unexpected subject. Obama called Clinton a flip-flopper on torture. ‘She has taken one position on torture several months ago, and then most recently has taken a different position,’ he fired. At first blush it seemed like an odd attack on Clinton, who has emphasized her ‘clear’ opposition to torture. But while Clinton continues to inch closer to the rest of the Democratic pack in her positions on the subject, her stance on torture isn’t as ironclad as it appears...

Invade and bomb with Hillary and Rahm

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

11/02/07

How do we account for the sudden rise of a new war hysteria, this time directed against Iran? While the administration has turned up the volume of its anti-Iranian rhetoric, and the mass media has duly — and largely uncritically — reported it, this is only part of the reason for the ominous uptick. The core reason is that we’re entering the political season, and none of the presidential candidates presented to us as ‘major’ will take war with Iran off the table: indeed, the Republicans — with one exception — seem to be competing with each other to see who can take the most ferociously provocative stance. When it comes to Iran, the Democrats are almost as bad — and, in the case of the putative frontrunner, perhaps even worse...

Bin Laden video doctored to seem new?

Raw Story

11/01/07

The Osama bin Laden video released this past September 7, just prior to the sixth anniversary of 9/11, has provoked widespread suspicions of fraud. In particular, bin Laden’s beard — which was grey and ragged in the video released just before the 2004 election — is thick, black, and neatly trimmed in the new footage. The video aroused widespread suspicions that bin Laden’s beard had been faked in some way, with former White House counterterrorism advisor Richard Clarke even speculating that bin Laden had shaved in order to hide out in a country like Indonesia, where Muslim men do not wear beards, and had then pasted on a false beard for the video...

It is a tragedy that in the midst of one failed war in Iraq, George Bush and Dick Cheney are pushing a second front of failure and gearing up to attack Iran. Anti-phone mast campaigners to hold meeting

RIPE residents who object to a scheme to build a 20-metre mobile phone mast in the village centre are staging a public meeting at the village hall at 7.30pm on Monday, November 5.

Operators O2 overturned Wealden planners' decision to refuse the scheme.
They won the right to build the mast on land at Church Farm on appeal, saying there was a need to plug a hole in the network.

Angry Out-of-Control Cops, Stun Guns and Deadly Force

by Jon Christian Ryter

What I find alarming in the hours of video footage I've viewed over the past four years, is how many cops used stun guns out of anger to punish people they were forced to chase on footnot because the perp swung at them or resisted arrest, but simply because they had to chase them on foot and got winded. Stun guns are only slightly less dangerous than real guns. In the hands of an angry cop who thinks his "suspect" is still resisting because he's twisting in agony on the groundand gives him another pulsating burst for good measurea stun gun can be just as lethal as a gun.......
