That, it’s widely agreed, is the sad tale of Barack Obama, who has managed to demoralize liberals while inspiring a wave of gloating among conservatives. A new CNN/Opinion Research poll finds that already, most Americans want to vote him out in 2012. But both Democrats and Republicans are jumping the gun...

I’m still glad I supported Obama over Hillary Clinton. If Hillary had won the election, every single day would be a festival of misogyny. We would hear constantly about her voice, her laugh, her wrinkles, her marriage and what a heartless, evil b... she is for doing something — whatever! — men have done since the Stone Age. … Liberal pundits would blame her for discouraging the armies of hope and change, for bringing back the same-old same-old cronies and advisers, for letting healthcare reform get bogged down in inside deals, for failing to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan. … In other words, for doing pretty much what Obama is doing. This way I get to think, Whew, at least you can’t blame this on a woman...

For months it has been obvious: President Barack Obama and his advisors don’t get it — in the language they use and the policies they pursue. The significance of November’s defeat of the entire Democratic ticket in Virginia was overstated in the media, but Gov. John Corzine’s loss in the governor’s race in New Jersey — and little-noted but significant losses in the comfortably Democratic suburban New York counties of Suffolk and Westchester — confirmed at the ballot box what the polls had been screaming long before Massachusetts...

Yesterday marked the one year anniversary of the massive $787 billion stimulus being signed into law. The White House continues to claim that the stimulus has saved upwards of 2 million jobs in the past year. According to Obama, the ’stimulus’ has been a record success: ‘One year later, it is largely thanks to the recovery act that a second depression is no longer a possibility.’ Despite the White House’ statements, only 6 percent of Americans believe that it has saved a single job...

The Vogtle site was to originally host four reactors at a total cost of $600 million; it wound up with two at $9 billion. The Southern Company which wants to build these two new reactors has cut at least one deal with Japanese financiers set to cash in on American taxpayer largess. The interest rate on the federal guarantees remains bitterly contested. The funding is being debated between at least five government agencies, and may well be tested in the courts. It’s not clear whether union labor will be required and what impact that might have on construction costs. The Congressional Budget Office and other analysts warn the likely failure rate for government-back reactor construction loans could be in excess of 50%...
