The Real Roots of the CIA's Rendition and Black Sites Program

H.P. Albarelli Jr. and Jeffrey Kaye, Truthout: "On Tuesday, February 10, the British High Court finally released a 'seven-paragraph court document showing that MI5 officers were involved in the ill-treatment of a British resident, Binyam Mohamed.' The document is itself a summary of 42 classified CIA documents given to the British in 2002. The US government has threatened the British government that the US-British intelligence relationship could be damaged if this material were released."

Ex-MI5 head: US hid torture tactics from UK

"I said to my staff, 'Why is he talking?' because our experience of Irish prisoners, Irish terrorists, was that they never said anything," she said. "They said, well, the Americans say he is very proud of his achievements when questioned about it. It wasn't actually until after I retired that I read that, in fact, he had been waterboarded 160 times."

Disloyal Opposition
by JD Tuccille

Last Friday, federal attorneys told the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals that government officials should be able to track the location of Americans by following their cell phone transmissions — without having to get a warrant. While the FBI and state and local officials have already obtained logs from mobile phone companies that reveal the locations of customers’ telephones, the practice has never formally been endorsed by the courts. The latest federal arguments — and rebuttals by civil liberties organizations — give the courts the opportunity to either support or repudiate federal claims that Americans have no ‘reasonable expectation of privacy’ so long as they carry cell phones...

Report: US state pension funds face $1 trillion shortfall

U.S. states face a total shortfall of at least $1 trillion in their funds for employees’ pensions and retirement benefits, and their financial problems are quickly mounting, according to a report released by the Pew Center on the States on Thursday. Illinois is in the worst shape, with only 54 percent of its pension obligations funded, according to the report, which looked at fiscal year 2008. Because the analysis did not encompass the final six months of calendar year 2008 — most states’ fiscal year’s end during the summer — it does not include the market downturn that devastated many funds’ investment portfolios...

Freedom in free fall

Acton Institute
by Kevin E. Schmiesing

If you’re known by the company you keep, then the United States may want to re-think its economic policy. The 2010 Index of Economic Freedom, a joint publication of the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal, measures the world’s nations according to a range of criteria from the ease of starting a business, to protection of property rights, to various forms of government interventions. Among the 15 ‘biggest losers’ during the past year was the United States, placing it among the likes of Libya, Uzbekistan, Mongolia, and Venezuela...

Stimulus Day

The Weekly Standard
by Matthew Continetti

Today marks one year since President Obama signed the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, otherwise known as the stimulus, into law in Denver, Colorado. In January 2009, Obama administration economists predicted the stimulus would hold unemployment to 8 percent, and that without a stimulus unemployment would rise to 9 percent. Instead, unemployment rose to a high of 10.1 percent before falling to 9.7 percent in January 2010. Majorities now oppose the stimulus. Only six percent of respondents in the recent New York Times / CBS News poll believe the stimulus has already created jobs...

The End of Obama's Vision of a Nuke-Free World

The fear and hype that emanate from American and European policymakers, strongly influenced by the zero-tolerance policy of Israel when it comes to Iran and anything nuclear, peaceful or otherwise, have created an environment where common sense goes out the window and anything becomes possible.

The Future's so Bright, I've Got to Wear Lead

By David Glenn Cox

Mr. Obama, CEO of Gopasskiss, Incorporated, formally known as the United States of America, will offer up $8.3 billion in loan guarantees to build two new nuclear power plants in Georgia.

Defying Progressives, Obama Revives Nuclear Power

Randy Shaw, Truthout: "Those who continue to insist that President Obama would implement progressive measures if he only had 60 Senate votes (ignoring that he had this for most of 2009) will have a hard time explaining his move this week to launch the first nuclear power plants built in the United States since the 1970s."

Don't Expect an Election to Change Everything

Jason Leopold and Robert Corsini, Truthout: "When Barack Obama was swept into the White House last year on a mandate of hope and change, many progressives believed his arrival meant they could finally roll down their sleeves and wash their hands. But David Swanson was not one of them. Although he voted for Obama, Swanson, author of the recently published book 'Daybreak: Undoing the Imperial Presidency and Forming a More Perfect Union,' predominantly about the Bush years, told Truthout that 'people have gone through this foolish cycle of expecting an election to change everything and then being disappointed and discouraged that it didn't.'"

The Folks Who Missed the Bubble Want Your Social Security

Dean Baker, Truthout: "If you fail disastrously at most jobs, you get sent packing. But, there are different rules for Washington policy wonks. The same crew who could not see the $8 trillion housing bubble that wrecked the economy are convening in Washington this week to hatch new schemes to take away people's Social Security and Medicare in the name of 'fiscal responsibility.'"

US is still paying companies that defy its policy on Iran

Joya Condemns 'Ridiculous' Military Strategy

"It is ridiculous," said Malalai Joya, an elected member of the Afghan parliament. "On the one hand they call on Mullah Omar to join the puppet regime. On another hand they launch this attack in which defenceless and poor people will be the prime victims.

Dollars for Death, Pennies for Life

Norman Solomon, Truthout: "When the US military began a major offensive in southern Afghanistan over the weekend, the killing of children and other civilians was predictable. Lofty rhetoric aside, such deaths come with the territory of war and occupation."

Malalai Joya Is an Angry Woman

Dominique Bari, L'Humanite in English: "Exclusive interview with the young Afghan deputy thrown out of Parliament for having exposed foreign interference in her country.... Malalai Joya is an angry woman. She's angry about the war being carried out by the international coalition in her country, Afghanistan, angry about the UN bombs that are killing civilians in their villages, angry about calls for reconciliation with the Taliban and the war lords. 'Stop the massacres in my country. Withdraw your foreign troops so we can stop Talibanization,' is what the young Afghan deputy tells Western public opinion."
