War is death and destruction and at its best it may be a necessary evil. It is losing a fellow soldier you have come to love as dearly as a brother. It is seeing mothers holding the dead and disfigured bloody corpses of their children and screaming in anguish for the loss. It is wondering how you can ever live again in a civilized society after having the brains of your best friend splatter across your chest and face. It is killing with extreme prejudice, drilled into you by your leaders, the enemy who you can no longer imagine as human, but instead some horrific animal whose last breath must be shot, crushed and beaten out of him. Somehow knowing this, men can sit calmly, in safety, far from war and make rules pertaining to the proper conduct of war. Peace and unity under the state are unsatisfactory at best, and murderous lies at worst.
