Christian leadership to change the world

For God's Sake

Paul Krugman writes: "Regent University, founded by the televangelist Pat Robertson to provide 'Christian leadership to change the world,' boasts that it has 150 graduates working in the Bush administration. Unfortunately for the image of the school, where Mr. Robertson is chancellor and president, the most famous of those graduates is Monica Goodling, a product of the university's law school. She's the former top aide to Alberto Gonzales who appears central to the scandal of the fired US attorneys, and has declared that she will take the Fifth rather than testify to Congress on the matter."

Senate Dems Warn Gonzales: We Want Real Answers

The Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday authorized subpoenas for documents from the White House and the Department of Justice relating to the firing of eight US attorneys last year. Senate Democrats threatened to issue the subpoenas if Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is not forthcoming in his Tuesday testimony before the committee.

Pelosi: "The President Is Not King"

On the "Today Show," Nancy Pelosi sat down with Campbell Brown to discuss her trip to Syria as well as the stand-off between the White House and Congress over war-funding. Pelosi said: "The president is not king, the president is the president of the United States. America is a democracy. We have to make decisions based on our judgment. Thus far, the president's judgment hasn't been good in terms of, say, for example, the war on Iraq. So with all due respect to the president and the role he has, we want respect for the role we have. And members of Congress have gone on fact-finding trips since our country began. We're not going to stop because the president wants to avoid the facts and doesn't want to engage in dialogue."

Bush Expands Influence Over Regulatory Agencies

The Bush administration's campaign for regulatory reform has now taken aim at guidance documents, with messages from federal agencies that tell businesses how to implement regulations. In Bush's latest approach toward weakening environmental and public-health regulations, the executive order creates opportunities for the White House Office of Management and Budget to block regulations and strip protections for children's health.

Claims Detail Grim Civilian Toll

Newly released documents have made public hundreds of claims for damages by Iraqi civilians requesting compensations for the death and injury of family members as a result of operations by Coalition Forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ACLU, which filed the Freedom of Information Act request for the documents, points out that the Defense Department has instituted numerous policies to limit the dissemination of information about casualties. The newly released documents show that the families of more than 500 Iraqi civilians killed by U.S. soldiers have asked for compensation for their dead relatives but only a third have been granted it.

“Toughness” of imperial presidency not due our respect

Tennessean
by Lewright B. Sikes

04/12/07

In a Tennessee Voices piece Tuesday (You don’t have to like Bush, but you’ve got to respect his toughness), John Rebrovick writes that he is ‘thankful’ that George W. Bush is ‘president for one overriding reason: He has recognized and engaged the enemy, and despite all the handwringers, bitter opposition and the low favorability ratings, he has held that line in the sand which his father drew nearly 20 years ago.’ … As a retired historian, I cannot let these remarks stand without seriously challenging them in the name of one of the 20th-century leaders of my profession, George Santayana, who said: ‘Those who do not know the past are doomed to repeat it’...

Newsweek hides global warming denier’s Big Oil ties

AlterNet
by Joshua Holland

04/12/07

So Newsweek is running an opinion piece about global warming titled: ‘Why So Gloomy?’ The piece is authored by Richard Lindzen, a well-known meteorologist, and his thesis about the potential melt-down of our climate can be boiled down to this: Don’t worry, be happy! At the bottom of the article, is this brief biographical sketch of the author: Lindzen is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Meteorology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research has always been funded exclusively by the U.S. government. He receives no funding from any energy companies. Sounds like he’s on the up-and-up, no? After all, the guy’s not one of those scientists who denies global warming and then cashes nice checks from a bunch of big energy firms, right? Maybe those wing-nuts are right when they deny that there’s a scientific consensus about human activities contributing to global warming. Hmmm. Oh, but wait. That name … Lindzen … sure does sound familiar...

The new Watergate?

CounterPunch
by Marjorie Cohn

04/12/07

The Bush administration is shocked, shocked, that the firing of a few U.S. attorneys has caused such a stir in Washington. After all, the Oval Office says, the President can choose whomever he wants to prosecute federal cases. But the Supreme Court declared in Berger v. United States that a prosecutor’s job is to see that justice is done, not to politicize justice. The mass ouster of the top prosecutors had more to do with keeping a grip on power — by manipulating voting rights — than with doing justice. And like the Watergate scandal, the evidence points to a cover-up...

McCain, the militarist

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

04/13/07

McCain poses as a hard-headed realist, who wants ‘a strategy that deals with how things really are in Iraq,’ but he underestimates the precariousness of the U.S. position — a miscalculation underscored by the attack on the Iraqi parliament in the supposedly secure precincts of U.S. power, the Green Zone. When the history of this war is written, this breach in the walls of the American sanctum sanctorum will be seen as the turning point, the moment when the outcome — a defeat for the U.S. — became readily apparent for all with eyes to see. Imagine, if you will, how the Iraqis see this signal event — an explosion that felled not only some of their elected representatives, but also killed the myth of American power — and it is clear why the war is lost...

CBS fires Imus

Houston Chronicle

04/13/07

The chief of CBS Corp. said the furor over Don Imus’ racist remarks had escalated beyond mere disgust with the talk show host. But it was Imus who ultimately paid the price. CBS abruptly fired Imus on Thursday from the radio show that he has hosted for nearly 30 years, a day after MSNBC said it would no longer televise it. Imus’ description of the Rutgers women’s basketball team as ‘nappy-headed hos’ set off a national debate about taste and tolerance. … For Imus’ critics, his recent remarks were the latest in a line of objectionable statements by the ringmaster of a show that mixed high-minded talk about politics and culture with crude, locker-room humor. Imus apologized, and tried to explain himself before the Rev. Al Sharpton’s radio audience, appearing alternately contrite and combative. But many of his advertisers bailed in disgust, particularly after the Rutgers women spoke of their hurt... [editor’s note: Personally, I suspect that things are working out just the way Imus planned, and that he’ll quickly pick up a more lucrative deal from satellite radio than he was getting from CBS - TLK]

Imus’s last outrage?

Boston Globe
by Joan Vennochi

04/12/07

Money talks, and in the case of Don Imus, it is saying: ‘You’re history.’ Prominent advertisers are distancing themselves from the legendary broadcaster. Staples, the office supply chain, asked MSNBC to remove its advertising from the television simulcast of Imus’s radio program. Procter & Gamble withdrew all its advertising from MSNBC’s daytime schedule. American Express Co. and General Motors Corp. also pulled advertisements from the show, which is broadcast on CBS Radio and MSNBC television. The simulcast was later canceled. These sponsors understood what Imus’s star-powered stable of pundits and politicos did not: When you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas. They showed more courage than anyone in the Imus crowd. But look what it took for Imus to finally shock them...

Kein Schritt weiter nach "1984"

#Die Linkspartei.PDS: Pressemitteilungen

13. April 2007

Farmer forced to sleep in his jeep

A farmer was forced to sleep in his jeep a mile from his own farmhouse following the installation of a phone mast on his land.

John Ryan of Cashel told the Kilkenny Advertiser on Monday that "to allow a phone mast to be installed on my land back in 2003 was the worst decision of my life, as my health has been badly effected since. For the past few years there has been awful pressure in my head and tightening in my chest which only began to happen after the mast had been installed on my farm. In my opinion these masts should only be installed far away from houses and farm dwellings."

Mr Ryan also said that his herd of cows have also been effected following the installation of the mast. "They are continually agitated and in 2004 we had four deformed calves born on the farm, which was unheard of before. We have also had situations of cows coming in calf on more than one occasion, which is completely unnatural."

Mr Ryan also revealed that he was hospitalised during 2004 when he was told that the rhythm of his heart was not correct. "The doctors told me that the mast was effecting my health, and that it should be turned off. During that particular time I was forced to sleep away from home in my jeep because I just could not sleep in my own bed. It was a terrible time."

John Ryan also said that "things could improve this coming August as the mast contract will be up then and it may be removed. We won't be in favour of it staying anyway, so hopefully life will return to what it was a few years ago."

On the subject of phone masts Mary White, the Deputy Leader of the Green Party who will be contesting the general election in the Carlow-Kilkenny constituency in a few weeks time said that Mr Ryan whom she has met on a couple of occasions "has suffered terribly on a personal level, and it is quite obvious that some people are very sensitive to the presence of phone masts."

Mary White told the Kilkenny Advertiser that "since the mobile companies are making millions they should be investing in fibre optic cables which must be a priority to elimimate masts. Another alternative should be the use of satellites, because the health of the general population must be protected as far as possible."

Just recently, an expert group commissioned by the Government said that there is no evidence of health effects from mobile phone masts. Its 'Health Effects of Electromagnetic Fields' report found no health hazard from mobile phones, phone masts, or power lines. The report added that the chance of any harm from electronicmagnetic sources was very small according to present knowledge.

Voting Rights Action Alert

The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR), of which NCADP is a member organization, is planning an unprecedented effort to encourage the Congress to grant voting rights to the District of Columbia, and NCADP has been asked to take part in the grassroots and legislative outreach components. On April 16th, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, along with DC Vote, numerous coalition partners, and the Office of the Mayor, will host what they hope to be the largest demonstration for D.C. voting rights in history.

Our support for this effort is based on the fact that we have an interest in assuring that the people of the District of Columbia, who have overwhelmingly demonstrated their opposition to capital punishment, have a vote on this issue in the House of Representatives. Some of you will remember that in 1994, NCADP and other organizations led a successful effort to defeat a referendum to reinstate the death penalty in D.C.. That referendum had been mandated by a law passed by Congress to place the measure on the D.C. ballot.

There are two ways you can make your voice heard for voting rights and LCCR has laid out both options, just click the links below: If you live in the District or will be near the District on Monday, April 16, please click here: http://civilrightscoalition.org/campaign/votingrightsmarch

If you live outside the District, please click here: http://civilrightscoalition.org/campaign/passthedcvra

It is not often that we will call on people to help in an effort that is not directly death penalty related, but this is such a watershed issue and the anti-death penalty heritage of the DC citizens makes this effort extraordinarily important.

Thank you again for your support...

"Grüne Friedensinitiative" will gegen grüne Kriegspolitik opponieren

Take Action Against The Imus HATE Speech

On HATE Speech And Freedom Of Speech

This form will submit your comments through the CBS Radio advertising department, the ONLY department there with an internet input function, but perhaps the best target anyway, with the message "Fire Imus permanently." Let them know contacting all their advertisers is next.

ACTION PAGE: http://www.millionphonemarch.com/fire_imus.php

For the truly outraged you might want to also personally call

Dana McClintock
Senior Vice President, CBS Communications Group
(212) 975-1077

There have been a rash of incidents lately getting national attention, involving people like Ann Coulter, Michael Richards, and now Don Imus. And what makes them especially notable is 1) the fact that people are finally starting to call out those who traffic in hate speech, 2) the amount of discussion the most recent incident has triggered, and 3) the persistence of talk as to what should be done about it.

By hate speech we take it to mean derogatory language based on race, sex or sexual preference, religion, nationality or age, all the things that would be a violation of LAW if they were the basis for job or housing discrimination. It is not a requirement of this definition that the speech be directed at a person OF that particular race, sex or sexual preference, religion, nationality or age. Indeed, in Coulter's case it was done completely gratuitously, but no less hatefully.

The defenses we have heard about these incidents have primarily been that they were jokes, as if there were some safe harbor for hate speech in humor. And some have further argued that some people in a particular group use words of hate in reference to their own, so supposedly that makes it OK for usage of those words outside that group in the same or worse ways.

It is self evident that we cannot ban hatred itself. There will always be people who in their minds will tar the totality of a particular group in some hateful way. And in some borderline cases with some words there might be some question of intent or usage. But the question now squarely before the public is how do we respond to the use of such language in our media discourse when it is patently offensive, and how is that to be reconciled with free speech?

The answer to that is almost as self evident. We who object to hate speech have our OWN free speech to call for the dismissal those who abuse their free speech to spew words of hate, and in particular those who have been given the privilege of media prominence, only to use that opportunity to broadcast words of hate far and wide.

In the last 24 hours sponsors of Don Imus have been dropping like flies, MSNBC has canceled his simulcast, he has been otherwise suspended for two weeks, and we say this should just be the beginning. It would be one thing if this were an isolated instance, but apparently Imus has a history of this type derogatory behavior and supporting others on his show who embrace it. Perhaps it is time that someone be made an example of, and perhaps Imus deserves it as much as anyone.

If enough of us were to pressure CBS Radio to pull the show entirely and permanently, that would send a message to all the other offenders that they are on the thinnest of possible ice from this moment forward. Let them find whatever rock they want to crawl under as their new media home, but if they expect mainstream advertisers to support them or major media outlets to carry them, let them expect constant public pressure to have them fired. And if someone actually thinks it's appropriate or funny to denigrate their own social category, let them know they run the same risk.

ACTION PAGE: http://www.millionphonemarch.com/fire_imus.php

Is this too severe of a reaction? To answer that question one need only look at what the NRA did to Jim Zumbo, a life long hunter, outdoors man and gun advocate, for suggesting that assault rifles might not be appropriate hunting weapons. He could not have apologized more desperately or profusely, and they still RUINED him relentlessly, and for no reason other than a spiteful political agenda. How much more should we demand accountability for the GOOD reason of cleansing our media of indefensible hate speech.

We have no problem with any manner of political speech, based on the issues and positions that people take on them. But we have had entirely too much of people being attacked for political purposes by means of utterly irrelevant hate speech. This INCLUDES as its ultimately most monstrous manifestation the dehumanization of people in entire foreign countries as a prelude to military assaults, as a way to arouse enough hatred to commit such crimes against humanity. Do we really have to give you historical examples? Perhaps attacking hate speech is one of the most powerful tactics we can employ to keep hate speech from becoming hate action.

If we were simply to forgive and forget, as some have suggested, the Coulters, and Savages, and Becks and Limbaughs of the world will just continue to believe they are impervious. Let them instead know that they are marked and on borrowed time if they think they will be tolerated anymore by an aroused public who will no longer hold their own tongues when confronted with hate language.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this message to everyone else you know.

Prison for a peacemaker

CounterPunch

The war in Iraq is the longest war in US history, even longer than Vietnam when one considers the first Gulf War extending through the sanctions (with interruptions for bombing, such as Clinton’s ‘Desert Fox’), to the illegal 2003 invasion and current occupation. So from 1991 through 2007 we have continuous war in one form or another for sixteen years. Through it all, Kathy Kelly has promoted peace for the Iraqi people and attempted to counter the brutal sanctions that, according to UN reports, directly contributed towards the deaths of 500,000 Iraqi children. She has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times, and spent time in prison for her actions. In this interview she tells the story of her struggle for peace, human rights, and social justice together with resulting experiences in jails and prisons in the Land of the Free. March’s fallen

Common Dreams

04/11/07

May we continue to remember that there are people dying in the hot, dry sands and dusty streets of Iraq every day. For causes which — out of respect for surviving family and friends, and their potential differences of opinion on the war — won’t be discussed or debated here. Here, we take a moment to consider each of the following eighty-six young men and women who died, as members of the United States Military, in March of 2007. May we linger over their names, their ages (together they average 25 years), where they lived — envisioning what each might have left behind, imagining the dreams that died alongside them...

To the victor belong the spoils’ has been the rule since Andrew Jackson. And every administration has displayed cases of abuse. But the Bush administration’s practices are more than the common and predictable problems with patronage. Bush has not simply filled jobs with favorites, oblivious to their underhanded dealings, as though he were a blithering latter-day version of Warren Harding. Bush has been determined to turn the entire federal government, every department and agency, into an instrument of a one-party state. From the GSA scandal to the purging of U.S. attorneys, Bush has engaged in a conscious, planned and systematic assault on the professional standards of career staff, either subordinating them or replacing them with ideologues...

West Point grads exit service at high rate

Recent graduates of the US Military Academy at West Point are choosing to leave active duty at the highest rate in more than three decades, a sign to many military specialists that repeated tours in Iraq are prematurely driving out some of the Army’s top young officers. According to statistics compiled by West Point, of the 903 Army officers commissioned upon graduation in 2001, nearly 46 percent left the service last year — 35 percent at the conclusion of their five years of required service, and another 11 percent over the next six months. And more than 54 percent of the 935 graduates in the class of 2000 had left active duty by this January, the statistics show...

When Your Failed Policy Actually Fails

Dr. Wilmer Leon writes: "After listening to Vice President Cheney say such things as the fight would be 'weeks rather than months,' the fight would 'go relatively quickly,' and 'I think things have gotten so bad inside Iraq ... my belief is we will, in fact, be greeted as liberators,' one has to wonder: Will he ever get it? What do you do when the foreign policy that was doomed from its inception - the policy you lied about in order to sell it - actually fails?"

White House Pulls Nomination to Top EPA Air Post

The White House on Wednesday withdrew its choice to head the Environmental Protection Agency's air pollution office after he ran afoul of key US lawmakers. William Wehrum, nominated to head the EPA's Office of Air and Radiation, was the architect of rules to regulate harmful power plant emissions that environmental groups and many Democrats blasted as too lenient.

The Birth of an Activist

Sara Rich writes: "As Suzanne and I attended the rally for 1st Lt. Ehren Watada on the first day of his court-martial, she turned to me and said: 'Mom, where are the kids my age? Where is my generation?' I replied that if it had not been for what she had been through, she would not be there protesting with me. She would be home sleeping or actively involved in the self-centered life of a normal 22-year-old."

US Is Extending Tours of Army in Battle Zones

The military announced Wednesday that most active duty Army units now in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as those sent in the future, would serve 15-month tours, three months longer than the standard one-year tour. Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement, "Extending the tours of all active duty Army personnel is an unacceptable price for our troops and their families to pay."

Millions of White House Emails Missing

Emails May Be Missing, White House Says

The White House said today that it may have lost what could amount to thousands of messages sent through a private email system used by political guru Karl Rove and at least 50 other top officials, an admission that stirred anger and dismay among Congressional investigators.

Millions of White House Emails Missing

A report Thursday details steps taken by the Bush administration to intentionally subvert the mandatory archiving of official email. The report indicates that the Bush administration willfully dismantled the email archiving system put in place by the Clinton administration and did not replace it with an adequate method to keep track of administration email, resulting in the loss of millions of messages.

Global Warming: Time to Act

Major news about global warming continues to blanket headlines. The Supreme Court gave the Bush Administration a major rebuke when it ruled that the EPA can indeed regulate CO2 emissions as an air pollutant. On top of that, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released another part of its report. It shows that the affects of global warming are happening now, and New Orleans is especially vulnerable. We must not hesitate to act.

Good thing the nationwide day of action is this week to insist that the United States take the lead on global warming by mandating an 80% cut in carbon emissions by 2050. You can get involved at http://www.stepitup2007.org. If you're in the high-impact zone (I mean, New Orleans), register for the event here: http://tinyurl.com/33tpl3

Regenwald in Paraguay extrem bedroht

Leahy: 'I Do Not Believe the White House'

President Bush's aides are lying about White House emails sent on a Republican account that might have been lost, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy suggested Thursday, vowing to subpoena those documents if the administration fails to cough them up.

Democrats challenge White House on lost e-mails

Toronto Star

04/12/07

The White House’s claim that e-mails sent on a Republican Party account might have been lost was challenged Thursday by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, who quipped that even his teenage neighbour could find them. ‘They say they have not been preserved. I don’t believe that!’ Leahy shouted from the Senate floor as the dispute over the firing of federal prosecutors continued at a high pitch. ‘You can’t erase e-mails, not today. They’ve gone through too many servers,’ said Leahy, D-Vt. ‘Those e-mails are there; they just don’t want to produce them. We’ll subpoena them if necessary.’ … White House officials insisted the administration was making a genuine effort to recover any missing e-mails that had been sent on an account sponsored by the Republican National Committee. … The Justice Department, meanwhile, prepared to release more documents detailing the decisions leading up to the firings of the eight prosecutors. The department has already given more than 3,400 pages of e-mails, schedules, memos and other documents to congressional panels...

Zwangsarbeit in der Ernte ist perfide Ausbeutung

#Die Linkspartei.PDS: Pressemitteilungen

12. April 2007

THE PREMIERE OF BILL MOYERS JOURNAL, "BUYING THE WAR"

http://www.pbs.org/moyers/moyersonamerica/index.html

The premiere of BILL MOYERS JOURNAL, "Buying the War," explores the role of the press in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq, including how the government's claims about weapons of mass destruction and terrorist ties to Saddam Hussein were largely accepted at face value by the mainstream media and cheer-leaded by the "partisan press." The marketing of the war has been much examined, but BILL MOYERS JOURNAL looks at how key elements of the media bought into the propaganda. "Buying the War" features interviews with Dan Rather, formerly of CBS; Tim Russert of "Meet the Press"; Bob Simon of "60 Minutes"; Walter Pincus of the Washington Post; Walter Isaacson, then president of CNN; editor at large of The New Republic and author Peter Beinart; talk show host Phil Donahue; and James Wolcott, Jonathan Landay and Warren Strobel of Knight Ridder, which was acquired by the McClatchy Company in 2006. Virtually alone, Knight Ridder asked for the hard evidence to back up the president's justification of the war.

"We're sending young men and women, and nowadays not so young men and women, to risk their lives. And everyone wants to be behind them. And everyone should be behind them," says James Walcott, Washington bureau chief of Knight Ridder. "The question for us in journalism is, are we really behind them when we fail to do our jobs?"
