Mortgage madness, again

by Steve Chapman

Watching Washington policymakers in action, I sometimes think they make mistakes because of unrealistic goals, flawed thinking, blind obedience to party, or dubious information. And sometimes I think they make mistakes because they are — how to put this? — clinically insane. There is no other way to explain what is going on at the Federal Housing Administration, which provides federal guarantees for home mortgages. Given the collapse in real estate prices, the weak economy, and the epidemic of foreclosures, banks are acting with more caution than before. They now commonly require home buyers to make down payments of 20 percent to qualify for a loan. But the FHA often requires only 3.5 percent...

US stock markets disconnected from reality

Campaign For Liberty
by John Browne

Earlier this year, I predicted that the 2009 rally in U.S. stocks could bring the Dow Jones Index as high as 10,000. It looks like that level has been achieved. If, at this point, the index reverses course, I would have made a fairly good prediction. However, it is important to get beyond the charts and look at the fundamentals. The furious six-month rally in the stock market has certainly not been mirrored by the economy as a whole. Instead, the country remains in recession, with unemployment continuing to rise and corporate earnings continuing to decline...

The reverse-Midas effect

by Justin Raimondo

U.S. actions in [central Asia] could be fairly evaluated as exhibiting a reverse-Midas touch: everything we get involved in generates a backlash — ‘blowback’ — in direct proportion to its visibility. Thus we are presently on a course that will eventually end in bringing about the very scenario we fear: a full-scale Islamist insurgency in Pakistan that threatens to topple the government and possibly come into possession of the country’s nuclear arsenal. The idea that we can intervene covertly, with sufficient subtlety to avoid a confrontation with the government — and nationalist elements in the military and the general population — is a foolish dream that ought to be summarily abandoned. How much money have we poured into the Pakistani rat hole — and to what effect? Our every effort boomerangs in our faces, mocking our purportedly noble intentions and underscoring our essential powerlessness in that wild region at the top of the world...

McChrystal's 40,000 Troop Hoax

Robert Naiman, Truthout: "General McChrystal says that if President Obama does not approve 40,000 more US troops for Afghanistan, and approve them right away, 'our mission' - whatever that is - will likely 'fail' - whatever that is. But even if President Obama were to approve General McChrystal's request, the 40,000 troops wouldn't arrive in time to significantly affect the 12-month window McChrystal says will be decisive."

Fighting the Taliban

What, Exactly, is Being Fought in Afghanistan?

By M. Reza Pirbhai

Washington insiders do not mention that the Taliban's "harsh form of oppression on women and others," which everyone from Madeleine Albright to Hillary Clinton have argued provides cause for war, is not a concern when relations with 'Wahhabi' Saudi Arabia are pursued.

'I'm here to understand what you mean by Taliban'

When we say we must fight the Taliban or must defeat them, what does it mean? I'm here to understand what you mean when you say Taliban. Do you mean a militant? Do you mean an ideology? Exactly what is it that is being fought?

Five facts about Afghanistan

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

The corridors of power in the nation’s capital are abuzz with the complexities of the situation in Afghanistan. If only we send 40,000 more troops, say the military brass, the U.S. could have some hope of turning the situation around and preventing Afghanistan from becoming a haven for terrorists yet again. Vice President Joe Biden has apparently suggested keeping the number of forces the same but shifting the U.S. mission more toward training the Afghan security forces and conducting Special Forces raids and drone attacks against al-Qaeda. Instead, a few simple facts on the ground in Afghanistan point to a third alternative...

Why the Taliban has tripled in size

by Brian Downing

The Afghan insurgency, we are repeatedly told, is based on intimidation and violence. This is true in parts of the country, but dubious in others. Indeed, seeing any insurgency as resting mainly on force is wrong and it will lead to wrong responses. Insurgencies develop when a non-government group builds rapport with at least parts of the populace. This was the case in Malaya, the Philippines, Algeria, and South Vietnam. And it is the case in Afghanistan...

The Banks Have Learned They Can Do Anything

Marie-Noelle Lienemann, David Cayla and Paul Quiles, Liberation: "If bank profits had any connection to the activity of the real economy, it would be good news. Instead, with unemployment growing (the American private sector destroyed another 250,000 more jobs in September), companies are not investing and households strangled by debt are legion. In such a context, in which banking practices have not changed, it is illusory to hope, as the government does, for lending that would be likely to relaunch production and consumption to resume."
