Americans Are Getting Poorer, and It's Going to Get Worse

Tony Pugh, McClatchy Newspapers: The early impact of the worst recession since the 1930s pushed median incomes down, forced millions more people into poverty and left more Americans without health care in 2008, according to new annual survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Protest gegen Delfinfang in Japan

The state of US national security

CounterPunch
by Brian Downing

09/10/09

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have ensnarled the military in long conflicts that have cost the lives of thousands of young Americans and inched the country toward fiscal calamity. In so doing, they have also weakened American security. Stirring exaltations and pithy quotes can do nothing to alter that...

The case for failure of the US

LewRockwell.Com
by Michael S. Rozeff

09/11/09

A number of major events in the past few years reinforce the notion that the U.S. is on a path of failure, not success. ‘Major’ means an event that involves near a trillion dollars or into the multi-trillions. A key variable in the success or failure of a nation and government like ours is the production of wealth. We the People produce this wealth. When our government selects strategies that impair the production of wealth and that destroy wealth, it causes failure. Let’s look at six major government strategies that are causing major failure. There are many more. In each case, there is a pattern of persistence. The government failures do not deter it from continuing the failed strategy. The government enlarges them. The end result of such behavior is the ruination of the country...

The rise of big business and the growth of government

Independent Institute
by Robert Higgs

09/10/09

Most people learn about the relation between the rise of big business and the growth of government in the form of what amounts to a morality play. In the most widely disseminated version, presented in nearly every American history textbook, the emergence of big business (playing the role of the devil) is said to have given rise to a variety of evils and abuses–monopoly power, pollution, exploitation of workers, and so forth. Matthew Josephson tells this story in rousing (if not scrupulously factual) style in his 1934 classic, The Robber Barons. The masses are said to have cried out for relief and to have pressed their political representatives to enact protective legislation. Thus emerged, most markedly during the Progressive, New Deal, and Great Society periods, a profusion of government programs, regulatory agencies, and direct government participation in economic life (divine intervention, as it were), which served to shield the public from the otherwise crushing weight of brutal laissez-faire capitalism. A competing tale, popular among many libertarians and some left-radicals, presents the rise of big business as leading directly to satanic endeavors. This version maintains that the big businessmen, however virtuous they might have been at the outset, ran into trouble because of rampant competition among the emergent big firms. To suppress this irksome, profit-sapping market phenomenon, they used their wealth diabolically to influence or bribe lawmakers to create government programs, regulatory agencies, and so forth that, in effect, allowed them to wield the government’s coercive power in the service of propping up their cartels, suppressing competition, and maintaining excessive profits...

Wounded troops mend as war coverage wanes

09/10/09

A year after Capt. Sam Brown was set ablaze when a bomb blew up his Humvee in Afghanistan, the 25-year-old West Point graduate endures a steady schedule of painful surgery and stretching to break up knotty burn scars. He also has another routine: checking a Web site that counts U.S. and coalition troop deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan. For Brown, it’s one more regular reminder that the wars have not ended — something he says many Americans seem to have forgotten...

Mobile phone mast close to school rejected

By Samantha Chetwynd

Published: 11/09/2009

Controversial plans to build a mobile phone mast close to an Inverness primary school have been rejected by a Scottish Government reporter.

Vodafone wanted to build a 40ft mast at the St Ninian Drive and St John’s Avenue junction, next to Dalneigh Primary School.

The proposal was unanimously rejected by the Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey planning committee in February, against the advice of council officers who had advised them that refusal on health grounds was “not a material planning consideration” and that citing visual impact would also be irrelevant.

TAKE ACTION HERE NOW: http://www.rainforestportal.org/shared/alerts/send.aspx?id=world_bank_indo_forests

Ombudsman report on 20 years of corrupt IFC, World Bank Group lending to the Indonesian oil palm industry casts doubt on Bank's fitness to manage international forest carbon funds that may emerge at Copenhagen climate talks. It is time for the World Bank to end finance of oil palm, sustainable forest management, paper pulp and other industrial rainforest developments known to be the root causes of deforestation, degradation and climate change. The Bank must permanently end financial support for these industrial developments impacting primary rainforests, or it is the wrong entity to administer forest carbon monies.

Eight Years Ago

William Rivers Pitt, Truthout: "Does anyone even remember the first eight months of the George W. Bush administration? It was an unmitigated train wreck. One of the last nails in our current economic coffin got hammered in when he gave away the Clinton surplus to his one-percenter buddies with a massive tax cut we couldn't afford and they didn't need. Chinese fighters swatted some of our airmen out of the sky, and George made sure they had Bibles."

How 9/11 Should Be Remembered

Rebecca Solnit, TomDispatch.com: "Eight years ago, 2,600 people lost their lives in Manhattan, and then several million people lost their story. The al-Qaeda attack on the Twin Towers did not defeat New Yorkers. It destroyed the buildings, contaminated the region, killed thousands, and disrupted the global economy, but it most assuredly did not conquer the citizenry. They were only defeated when their resilience was stolen from them by clichés, by the invisibility of what they accomplished that extraordinary morning, and by the very word 'terrorism,' which suggests that they, or we, were all terrified. The distortion, even obliteration, of what actually happened was a necessary precursor to launching the obscene response that culminated in a war on Iraq, a war we lost (even if some of us don't know that yet), and the loss of civil liberties and democratic principles that went with it."

Decision on Sefton masts is deferred again

Sep 10 2009

by Nick Moreton, Crosby Herald

A ROW has erupted over plans to lift a controversial ban on mobile phone masts being put up on Sefton Council property.

A moratorium currently exists which prohibits the authority from erecting mobile phone masts on its land and buildings.

The moratorium was rushed through in 2000 in response to people’s fears about the effect of the masts.
