A network of US allies in East Africa secretly have transferred to prisons in Somalia and Ethiopia at least 80 people who were captured in Kenya while fleeing the recent war in Somalia, according to human rights advocates. The hidden dangers of mast radiation

I cannot see the point of Chris Shepherd's contention that people who smoke, drink or drive are not entitled to express anxieties about phone mast radiation.

Having worked for years with children as a psychotherapist, I became aware of many of the hazards that our modern lifestyle presents to them, including such things as food additives, passive smoking, sleep deprivation, chemical pollution etc, as well as cell phone and mast radiation.

To ignore these dangers, particularly when many of them could be prevented relatively easily, would be irresponsible. That is why the charity SHOC came into being - to raise public awareness. It would be nonsense for anybody to ignore them, simply because they drove a car or drank alcohol.

I am concerned for children who are subjected to risks without even knowing they exist. Maybe there are no known deaths attributed to mobile phone masts. That could be because the long-term effects have yet to be recognised, but certainly there are numerous reports of cancer clusters occurring around masts. Mast radiation has also been shown to cause headaches, dizziness, depression, fatigue, poor concentration and cardiovascular problems.

Fears over bid to put phone mast near schools

A telecommunications giant has announced controversial plans to install a mobile phone mast close to homes - and within a mile of three schools.

O2 has submitted plans for a 12.5 metre mast mock telegraph pole near to Earlham Road police station, but also within half-a-mile of Heigham Park First School, St Thomas More Roman Catholic Primary School and within a mile of Earlham High School.

Today, Alan Shawcross, deputy head of Earlham High School, said he was very concerned that a mast should be proposed so close to local schools.

"Anything that might affect the development of a child or younger children feeding into our school we would have a concern about - there are concerns around mobile phone masts which haven't been resolved and need further research," he said.

Mr Shawcross said any decision about objecting to the plans for the mast, which is to be a mock telegraph pole shrouded in its wood cladding, would be for the governors.

The Evening News is campaigning against the installation of mobile phone masts near homes and schools until it is proved they are safe.

In January 2005, Sir William Stewart, chairman of the National Radiological Protection Board, published an independent report calling for a precautionary approach to masts near homes and schools.

But an Evening News investigation the same month revealed one in five primary schools in Norwich and its suburbs was within the threshold which experts claim could put youngsters at risk.

Plans by O2 for a mast on Earlham Road close to the police station follows a similar application by the company which was thrown out by the city council's planning committee in January.

City planners went against the recommendations of officers to approve proposals by O2 for a 12.5m mock telegraph mast next to the police station and said it would be an eyesore,

More than 40 people had raised concerns about the plans and planning committee members received 11 letters of objection citing visual impact and health fears.

Police officers at the nearby station also said that although the mast would not interfere with its main Airwave communication system, it might have caused "localised blocking" of police mobile phones and blackberries.

Rupert Read, a Green city councillor for Wensum ward, said: "It seems fishy that O2 are putting in such a similar planning application again after the one they had before was rejected. I think it's clear that people in the area don't want a mast there. Itan unwelcome intrusion on the local landscape and creates potential health concerns."

In places like the United States and Germany mobile masts cannot be built within 500 metres of homes and schools.

Court Halt on GMO Alfalfa Shows USDA Failure

A court decision overturning US government approval for a Monsanto biotech alfalfa underscores complaints made for years that the USDA is failing to adequately oversee genetically-altered crops. US District Court Judge Charles Breyer of the Northern District of California immediately halted seed sales and ordered that any planting must cease after March 30 following his determination that the USDA violated the law in allowing unrestricted commercial planting of the crop. The judge said the USDA should have prepared an environmental impact statement before deregulating the Roundup Ready alfalfa.

This House cannot avoid its Constitutionally authorized responsibility to restrain the abuse of Executive power.

The Administration has been preparing for an aggressive war against Iran. There is no solid, direct evidence that Iran has the intention of attacking the United States or its allies.

The US is a signatory to the UN Charter, a constituent treaty among the nations of the world. Article II, Section 4 of the UN Charter states, "all members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. . ." Even the threat of a war of aggression is illegal.

Article VI of the US Constitution makes such treaties the Supreme Law of the Land. This Administration, has openly threatened aggression against Iran in violation of the US Constitution and the UN Charter.

This week the House Appropriations committee removed language from the Iraq war funding bill requiring the Administration, under Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 of the Constitution, to seek permission before it launched an attack against Iran.

Since war with Iran is an option of this Administration and since such war is patently illegal, then impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran.

It was a surreal spectacle to see the vice president attacking the Democratic plan for Iraq by arguing that it's "been called 'slow bleed'". Now, how exactly did that coined description end up coming out of the mouth of every corporate media toady out there, except for the fact that Cheney himself directly ORDERED them through his underlings to say it? It's reminiscent of when they would plant stories in the New York Times and then rely on the same stories as justifying authority for what they were doing.

You bet we want to slow down the bleeding (as opposed to the accelerating bleeding which is going on now). In fact, we want to STOP the bleeding altogether, and the amputations and the deaths too. And now at least we have a Senate bill which proposes a withdrawal timetable. While we agree with Senator Feingold in supporting it that the measure is still not binding enough, the Republicans are confident that can defeat it, which is the only reason they are allowing an actual vote.

Well, maybe, if enough of us call and email them we can make them a little less confident in defying the clear will of the American AND the Iraqi people. Especially if you have any Republican senators they need to reminded of when they are next up for re-election. And all of our Democratic senators need to hear from us so that they present a united front.

The Hearings before the House Administration Cmte. on Electronic Voting are stacked with testimony by HR811 and DRE supporters (see list below).

For example, the two persons sceduled to testify on election audits have no math or statistical qualifications (Candice Hoke is an attorney) and Larry Norden does not have a math background either. Both Hoke and Norden co-authored a misleading "analysis" in support of HR811's audit.

HR811 election audits are mathematically insufficient (having probabilities well below 50% for detecting outcome-altering vote miscount in many US House races); over-audit in large-margin races in districts with many precincts; and can be gamed by creating smaller numbers of larger precincts, by simply declaring state "recounts" (even without any hand recounts), or by hiding vote miscount in a couple of large absentee ballot counts.

Despite the fact that I am the foremost authority on election audit mathematics in the U.S. today, Larry Norden of the Brennan Center shunned my overtures to meet with him when I traveled to the NYC area a few weeks ago, and I have not been invited to testify before Congress, despite my expertise and my ability to clearly explain the mathematics with charts and pictures to the Congress.

A more effective election audit could be done for the same cost!

For another example of who is testifying, Eric Clark is the MS Secretary of State, who recently adopted state-wide paperless DREs at a time when anyone who could read about it knew better.

Ted Selker, is a proponent of DREs w/ VVPATs and high-tech solutions from MIT and has said: "The best future schemes might include computer agents that check one another and create internal audits to validate every step of the voting process." and "A better option would allow people to verify their selections with recorded audio feedback." and "The government should invest in research to develop and test secure voting technology, including DREs and Internet voting."

David Wagner, another person scheduled to testify, is another co-author of the "analysis" recommending the insufficient, inefficient, scam-able, HR811 audits along with Norden and Hoke.

The three co-authors of the "sham HR811 audit analysis" who will be testifying before the House during these "HR811-Sales-Hearings", neglected to mention that in any US House district with fewer than 400 precincts the HR811 audit has little chance of detecting vote miscount that could alter the outcome, nor do they mention that the HR811 audit is AS BURDENSOME for election officials as a more effective election audit would be.

The two pretend "audit experts" are way too smart to be unaware that they are not experts in audit mathematics. Do they care for their country and the future well-being of the world enough to be honest?

I'm not sure where to find or point you to more information, but the Subcommittee on Elections of the House Administration Committee has a number of very interesting upcoming hearings. These don't appear to be listed on the Committee's website ( http://cha.house.gov/ ).

This Thursday (3/15) there are two hearings; one on disabled access and paper records in voting systems and the other on source code disclosure and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) software in voting systems (I may very well be wrong about the scope of the hearings).

Witnesses for the disabled access panel include:

* Diane Golden - Consortium of Citizens with Disabilities
* Kelly Pierce - Disability Access Voter, Working Group Cook County
* Eric Clark - Mississippi Secretary of State
* Ted Selker - Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Witnesses for the source code disclosure panel include:

* David Wagner - UC Berkeley, ACCURATE
* Matt Zimmerman - Electronic Frontier Foundation
* Brian Behlendorf - Collab.net, Apache Software Foundation

Then, next Tuesday (3/20) there will be a hearing on, I believe, auditing elections. I know Larry Norden of the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law will be testifying and I believe Candice Hoke from the CSU Law School Center for Election Integrity will also testify.
