TOWN CENTRE PHONE MAST PLAN
THE possibility of a new mobile phone mast being erected on the Caledonian Hotel in Leven was due to be debated on Tuesday.
Councillors have been advised to grant planning permission to Orange for the installation of three antennae and a satellite dish, despite strong local objection.
Residents of nearby Forth Street are concerned at the site's proximity to houses and a local nursery school.
One objector pointed out: "The health risks associated with exposure to mobile phone technology are well documented and continue to be monitored."
Another stated: "It is not a suitable development in a mixed residential/business area."
However, local planning chiefs believe the application is an appropriate one and have recommended it for approval, subject to some minor conditions.
They don't consider health concerns to be "material in assessment of this application" and stressed the mast would have no affect on Leven's appearance.
The decision was due to be taken at Tuesday's meeting of Fife Council's central area development committee in Kirkcaldy.
