How Globalization Set the Stage for the 2008 Economic Collapse

ROBERT CREAMER

huffingtonpost.com — The extent of the 2008 economic collapse surprised and shocked the conventional wisdom in Washington and on Wall Street. But in hindsight, a good case can be made that the massive globalization of labor and financial markets, coupled with "free markets über alles" policies, formed a toxic mixture that made the collapse inevitable.

FDA Scientists Complain to Obama of "Corruption"

Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar, The Associated Press: "In an unusually blunt letter, a group of federal scientists is complaining to the Obama transition team of widespread managerial misconduct in a division of the Food and Drug Administration. 'The purpose of this letter is to inform you that the scientific review process for medical devices at the FDA has been corrupted and distorted by current FDA managers, thereby placing the American people at risk,' said the letter, dated Wednesday and written on the agency's Center for Devices and Radiological Health letterhead."

Hunger Strikers Surge to 10 Percent at Guantanamo

Carol Rosenberg, McClatchy Newspapers: "Guantanamo captives are staging a fresh wave of hunger strikes ahead of the seventh anniversary of the controversial prison camps -- a campaign a lawyer links to the speedy release of Osama bin Laden's driver from US military detention. As of Thursday, 30 of the 250 war-on-terror detainees were classified as hunger strikers, 25 of whom were being fed through tubes in their noses, said Navy Cmdr. Pauline Storum at Guantanamo."

President Bush Saved US Lives?

Richard Clarke, The New York Daily News: "George Bush, still President, is engaging in a legacy tour of media outlets. This comes despite his earlier having said he did not know how history would judge the Iraq war 'because we'll all be dead.' Actually, many people are already dead because of Bush, and that is the point to keep in mind when he talks about his legacy. Among the themes Bush is striking are that through action at home and fighting 'them' over there, not over here, his administration stopped terrorist attacks and prevented another 9/11."

The American People have shirked their duty and squandered their power almost from the beginning. We are not speaking here of government officials or business leaders, but of the common man and woman on the street. For decades, the citizenry of other countries, being in love with the American Ideal, have given the American people a pass as being either too powerless or too innocent to be held accountable. This has been changing for the past few years, accelerating with the Islamic uprising(s), and this acceleration is accelerating. Soon, the American Citizen will be held accountable in fact for their government’s actions...

The war on rhetoric

Slate
by John Dickerson

01/06/09

Jonathan Martin of Politico reports that Joe Biden declared ‘we’re at war,’ when talking about the current economic crisis with a group of congressional leaders yesterday. Biden’s spokeswoman said that the vice president-elect was making the case that passing the stimulus bill will require members of Congress to join in the same spirit of cooperation that reigned just after the 9/11 attacks. Politicians are fond of comparing things that aren’t war to war. It’s both an abuse of language and a rhetorical trick. We hear about war, and we think whatever bold actions this politician is asking us to take must be worth it because, well, it’s war. But a lot of the things presidents have declared war on are still with us...

How do we limit the damage?

The Medical Freedom Channel
by Steve Trinward

01/08/09

Judging from the choices Barack Obama has made so far, with few exceptions, we will likely have no rollback of the USA PATRIOT Act, no release of unindicted ‘terrorists’ from Gitmo, no rapid withdrawal of troops from overseas interventions, no curtailment of the DEA and other incursions on state-approved medical marijuana … Instead, we face a strong likelihood of nationalized health insurance, expanded welfare statism, additional business regulation for-its-own-sake and who-knows-how-many other agenda-items from the ‘progressive’ laundry-list. (And then, maybe, if we give them all they want in that realm, they MIGHT condescend to begin dealing with a few of the ‘fascism’ issues, like the restoration of the Bill of Rights?) So it’s becoming pretty clear that we’re going to face some form of ‘healthcare reform’ in the coming administration...

Or rather, spreading the pain and the blame. Obama is working pretty hard to bring Republicans in the House and Senate over to his brand of Keynesian economics by packing his proposed ’stimulus’ package with loads of tax cuts. We’re standing at that historic fork in the road where the nation decides, now and for the foreseeable future, whether it’s going to hang on to the catastrophic assumptions of the free-market fundamentalists and rely once more on the nostrums that have so far failed to fix the mess, or take a bold step down a new, more progressive path that will finally re-empower the American people to build an economy that works for us all. As usual, the conservatives have absolutely no conscience about what they did to create this mess. America's Soul Sickness And Permanent War

Obama's Rude Awakening

Obama's first challenge will not be the unresolved Middle East crisis. Nor will it be Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo or the economy. His primary challenge will come in coming face to face with the Bush/Cheney doctrine of permanent worldwide war. The Bush Family's Secrets

Frederick Clarkson, Religion Dispatches: "There remain astounding hidden dimensions involving the skills of 'spy craft' acquired in a lifetime of covert intelligence activities by George H.W. ('Poppy') Bush and many of his closest associates. This, according to a just-published investigative history of the Bush political dynasty, 'Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, the Powerful Forces that Put it in the White House, and what Their Influence Means for America' (Bloomsbury Press, 2008). Author Russ Baker shows, among other things, that Poppy Bush's well-known service as a Navy pilot in World War II was also part of his work for Naval Intelligence. This set the stage for an astonishing double life participating in covert operations of the Central Intelligence Agency throughout his career."

Globale Krise - Globale Proletarisierung

Globale Krise – Globale Proletarisierung – Gegenperspektiven

Globale Krise

Many Americans do love their police state

Civil Liberties Examiner
by JD Tucille

01/05/09

Scattered through the comments to yesterday’s column about a Customs and Border Patrol stop of a passenger train that never crossed the boundaries of the United States are little gems of the sort that I’ve come to dread and anticipate in equal parts: praise for the government for behaving in an arbitrary and heavy-handed manner. Unfortunately, all too many of our friends, neighbors and relations have come to relish acting like bit players in a bad Cold War film. They’re more than happy to bow down to the nearest uniform so long as somebody assures them it will ‘keep us safe’ — from whom, it doesn’t matter, though it’s certainly not from overbearing authorities...

Stop Censoring International News in America

Information Clearinghouse
by Timothy V. Gatto

01/07/09

In every year that passes, our mainstream media becomes more and more like ‘The Ministry of Truth’ in 1984. It is so easily observed in conversations with those that get their news from the mainstream media. The difference in opinion between those that know the full story and those that prefer to ‘trust’ the commercial media is like the difference between night and day. … Americans must realize that our media is not telling the entire truth, not only about Israel and Gaza, but just about every international event. The media actually twists the truth to correlate with the State Department on foreign affairs. This gives the illusion that America is always on God’s side, and supports the ‘good fight.’ Nothing could be further from the truth. The United States supports any country that can further their mindless wars against Islam and Arabs. When will this stop?

Bush and the damage done

Salon
by Vincent Rossmeier and Gabriel Winant

01/08/09

After a couple of presidential terms, mismanagement in every area of policy — foreign, domestic, even extraterrestrial — starts to add up. When George W. Bush entered the White House in January 2001, he inherited peace and prosperity. The military, the Constitution and New Orleans were intact and the country had a budget surplus of $128 billion. Now he’s about to dash out the door, leaving a large, unpaid bill for his successors to pay. To get a sense of what kind of balance is due, Salon spoke to experts in seven different fields. Wherever possible, we have tried to express the damage done in concrete terms — sometimes in lives lost, but most often just in money spent and dollars owed. What follows is an incomplete inventory of eight years of mis- and malfeasance, but then a fuller accounting would run, um, somewhat longer than three pages...

New Trouble for an Obama Nominee

Admiral Dennis Blair Aided Perpetrators of 1999 Church Killings in East Timor.
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article21667.htm

--------

Tell The Senate To Reject Nominee Admiral Blair Who Greenlighted Genocide

True progressives have found various Obama appointments so far to leave much to be desired . . . even to the point of being disturbing. But the nomination of Admiral Dennis Blair for Director of National Intelligence cannot be permitted to pass under any circumstances.

As reported by Democracy Now, when genocidal monsters in the Indonesian military were committing massacres in East Timor, Admiral Blair DEFIED his orders to get them to stop, and instead gave them encouragement to continue. He then lied to Congress about it all. No such loose cannon with such blood on his hands can be allowed in the new administration. The links to both these video stories can be found on the Reject Blair Action Page below:

Reject Blair Action Page: http://www.usalone.com/reject_blair.php

Director of National Intelligence requires Senate confirmation, so please also call your Senators directly tollfree at 800-828-0498, 800-473-6711, especially if you have new Senators coming in, ask for them by name and leave your message opposing this appointment.

Torture Question You Voted For Is Now Breaking National News Story

All of our participants who voted for the special prosecutor for torture question had a real impact this week. The fact that we the people voted this question number one on the Obama "change" site made the New York Times, got a featured segment on Keith Olbermann and there is more to come.

As our focus shifts now to prosecuting the current criminal residents of the White House for what they have done, we are happy to report we just got in the first huge delivery of the new "Convict Dick & W" caps. We'll be working all weekend to get the ones you have already requested ready for shipment, so there is still time to get in on the first mailing if you request yours now.

Convict Dick & W Caps: http://www.usalone.com/convict_cap.php

And the extra special news is that just before we went into production we asked the embroidery digitizer to hang a little cowboy hat on the "W" in the "Convict Dick & W". Yes, a little cowboy hat for a very small and cowardly man, the cowboy from Connecticut, our first presidential convicted felon to be, George W. Bush. It's perfect, in red, white and blue.

We are not setting a price for these. You can have one for a contribution of any amount. We just want to put as many out there as possible. And we will have much more news for you soon about planned actions to pressure prosecutors at all levels to step up to the plate and do their duty.

AIDS Bike Ride Support Page

We heard from one of our participants already about the upcoming AIDS/Lifecycle 8 bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, starting May 31, 2009, to raise awareness for those living with HIV/AIDS. We would like to set up a support page for this worthy event on our site. So please if there are any other of our participants interested who are involved in this please email back so we can include you.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

A Military Dictatorship Coming To America?

By Pakistan Daily

THE WORSENING ECONOMIC CRISIS has prompted the US Army War College to issue a report urging the use of military troops to contain possible civil unrest throughout America. Entitled, Strategic Shocks in Defense Strategy Development, issued on November 4, 2008, the report argues that the US military must prepare for a "violent domestic dislocation provoked by an economic collapse."

Hey, Obama: Government can’t be Mr. Fix-it
Fox Forum

by Dan Gainor

01/14/09

A few years ago, the Securities and Exchange Commission looked at Bernie Madoff’s operation and said it was doing things just fine. Madoff then allegedly went on to scam $50 billion from unknowing investors. Congress instituted the Alternative Minimum Tax to go after a couple millionaires but forgot to adjust it for inflation. It now threatens as many as 24 million taxpayers each year. Government brought us the Katrina fiasco, a broken immigration process and the Department of Motor Vehicles. … Traditional conservatives understand what Ronald Reagan said that government isn’t the solution, government is the problem. And Obama will only make the problem bigger. What’s ironic is that, at the very same time Obama is supporting the expansion of government, he’s pointing out what a miserable failure it can be...
