United States Re-emerges as Leading Arms Supplier to the Developing World

Rachel Stohl, Center for Defense Information: "On Oct. 23, 2008, the Congressional Research Service released the most recent version of its annual arms transfer report, 'Conventional Arms Transfers to Developing Nations, 2000-2007.' According to the report, U.S. arms agreements to both developed and developing countries increased from 2006 levels, re-establishing the U.S. position of top arms supplier to the developing world, a position that Russia claimed in 2006."

Obama's Black Widow

Nat Hentoff, The Village Voice: "Barack Obama will be in charge of the biggest domestic and international spying operation in history. Its prime engine is the National Security Agency (NSA) - located and guarded at Fort Meade, Maryland, about 10 miles northeast of Washington, D.C. A brief glimpse of its ever-expanding capacity was provided on October 26 by The Baltimore Sun's national security correspondent, David Wood: 'The NSA's colossal Cray supercomputer, code-named the 'Black Widow,' scans millions of domestic and international phone calls and e-mails every hour.... The Black Widow, performing hundreds of trillions of calculations per second, searches through and reassembles key words and patterns, across many languages.'"

Concerned at phone mast plans

Published Date: 08 January 2009

By Staff reporter

A COUNCILLOR concerned about the construction of mobile phone base stations around Carrickfergus wants residents opposed to new masts to give planners a piece of their mind.

Alderman David Hilditch told this week’s meeting of the Borough Council that his office has received “quite vociferous” objections to proposals by Vodafone to site telecommunications equipment at the North Road service reservoir.

An application, which Planning Service says it is content to approve, envisages a 20 metre-high lattice tower housing three antennae and two dishes, with an adjacent equipment cabinet and surrounded by a 1.8m fence.

The incoming Obama Administration says it wants to shut down the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay. Approximately 250 detainees are currently being held at Guantanamo; an estimated 670 are locked up under similar conditions at Bagram...

Bush’s final purge

In These Times
by Christopher Moraff

01/05/09

The Bush administration is reportedly using its final months in office to exact retribution on federal employees who have spoken out against agency policies during the past eight years. Since April, the administration has dismissed — or notified of pending dismissal — more than a dozen federal whistleblowers, according to Marsha Coleman-Adebayo, founder of the civil rights group No Fear Coalition and director of the National Whistleblowers Center. Some have come as recently as November. They include staffers at the Departments of Commerce, Labor, Education and Transportation. And, Coleman-Adebayo says, those are only the employees who are willing to go on record...

Stimulus Time: The Fierce Urgency of Now

Mark Weisbrot, The Center for Economic and Policy Research: "Nobody needs to be told that our economy is going down the tubes at a rate unseen for decades. Every week brings new numbers that are setting records. In just the three months ending in November the job loss was 1.26 million, the worst since 1975. We have lost more than 2 million jobs in 2008."

Stimulus Plan: The Need and the Size

Robert Reich: "The core problem we face is not access to capital. The Treasury has already flooded Wall Street and the banking system with money, committing nearly $350 billion; the Federal Reserve Board has exchanged Treasury bills for some $2.2 trillion of troubled assets; other agencies, such as the FDIC, have guaranteed trillions more. But there has been no appreciable result. Banks will not lend because they fear borrowers will not repay; businesses will not borrow because they do not have adequate markets for their goods and services; individuals cannot and will not borrow because they do not have enough reliable income to do so."

Obama’s terrible stimulus

The Liberty Papers
by Kevin

01/06/09

Obama’s plan is terrible for many reasons. The first obvious reason is that the country really cannot afford any new spending after blowing at least $8.4 trillion (in an overall economy of $13.8 trillion and shrinking) in bailouts for Bush and Paulson’s friends in the financial sector. The second reason is that very little of this new spending is actually permitted in the U.S. Constitution. The Federal government cannot ‘invest’ in ‘green collar jobs’ or any other type of jobs for that matter. The Federal government has no Constitutional role in education spending (which is another part of Obama’s ‘plan’). Thirdly, the areas where you can argue a legitimate duty of the Federal government, highway construction, is prone to abuse and wasteful spending through the earmarking process (which is the currency for corruption)...

More on the bogus Obama “jobs” program

Classically Liberal

A construction worker hired to build some bike path, merely to create employment, at least builds a bike path. Sure his pay comes from taxing productive jobs and thus reducing their numbers. But as bad as that is the construction worker isn’t inflicting additional harm on the economy when he works. Government employees are largely destructive. They are paid for from the productive sector. But that is not the harm they inflict. More bureaucrats, doing what bureaucrats do, is destructive. They regulate, control and manipulate in ways that benefits themselves or their political masters. I have little doubt that Obama wants an additional 600,000 government workers since the trade union for bureaucrats tends to fund Democratic candidates. An addition 600,000 federal leeches will provide votes for the Democrats and a ready-made lobby group to push for more federal bureaucrats. Unlike the make-work jobs Obama will create these employees will be entirely unproductive and have negative value...

It amazes me, here amid many calls for the government to take an ever more active role in our country’s doings, that so many of these cautionary tales seem to be forgotten. … FBI investigations and anti-bribery laws will never take the corruption out of politics. The best way to limit it is to keep government small, with few jobs to fill and limited money to spend...

For real stimulus

Congress is ready to ram through a half-baked stimulus package costing as much as $1 trillion. But if it’s stimulus we need, why not make it effective stimulus — tax cuts, say, instead of wasteful spending? The End of the Financial World as We Know It

"Greed" doesn't cut it as a satisfying explanation for the current financial crisis. Greed was necessary but insufficient; in any case, we are as likely to eliminate greed from our national character as we are lust and envy. The fixable problem isn't the greed of the few but the misaligned interests of the many.

Insulting the Constitution

Boston Globe

Within weeks after taking office, President-elect Barack Obama will have a chance to draw a line between the Bush administration’s fast-and-loose treatment of the Constitution and his own commitment to stick to its terms in cases involving suspected terrorists. In 2001 in Illinois, US officials arrested a student from Qatar and later accused him of being an Al Qaeda sleeper agent. Since 2003, the administration has held the student, Ali al-Marri, as an enemy combatant without proving its suspicions before a jury. … Obama should end the government’s attempt to hold Marri in this way and decide whether to deport him or to try him in federal court on criminal charges...

US Auto Sales Plunge Whopping 36 Percent in December

Tom Krisher, The Associated Press: "Huge rebates and zero-percent loans couldn't overcome economic uncertainty as US auto sales plunged 36 percent in December, capping a dismal year that saw sales free-fall by 2.9 million vehicles from 2007. The bleak numbers, according to both industry officials and analysts, mean that record high rebates and low-interest financing deals will stick around until at least February. But those deals will likely disappear as the remaining 2008 models are sold and inventories are lowered to match demand."

Kinderarmut kleingerechnet

Councillor backs Whittle-le-Woods residents’ protest over phone masts

9:18am Tuesday 6th January 2009

A Chorley councillor has come out in support of residents opposed to plans to put up a 44-feet high mobile phone mast in Whittle-le-Woods.

Coun Mark Perks, who represents Astley and Buckshaw on Chorley Borough Council and the borough on Lancashire County Council, says the Vodafone mast - close to Foxglove Drive on the A6 - is not in keeping with the surrounding street scene.

Buy, buy, buy

While we stumble along economically with bailouts, buyouts, and poor sales in almost all sectors, two products in America are seeing dramatic increases in sales: guns and ammo. People who never owned a gun before are buying; people are buying multiples of military style weapons and ammo is being bought by the case instead of by the box. Many explain this away as folks simply worried that Obama will move to ban certain firearms, especially those referred to by the ignorant as ‘assault weapons,’ I believe the motivation to buy firearms and ammunition goes much deeper. More and more Americans are becoming increasingly aware of the storm that is brewing on the horizon, a storm driven by the possibility of a complete economic collapse. The more astute are reading the handwriting on the wall: military combat units being assigned for stateside duty to quell domestic disturbances, a militarization of law enforcement, and the fear of what will happen when the state is no longer able to provide monthly checks to the millions currently living on government handouts labeled as ‘entitlements’...

The death of trust

Richter Report
by Jim Richter

01/09

Do not think for one minute that a fiat currency/fractional reserve banking system is without consequences for any society which adopts it. To the contrary, such systems are violative of the ancient doctrine that one must use only honest weights and measures when conducting business. Fiat currency is not a system of honest weights and measures. Other than the configuration of the ink on the paper, a $100 bill is no different than a $1 bill. Both can be created at virtually no cost, and both have no real capacity to serve as a store of value. This is why fiat currency has such a corrosive effect upon all aspects of a society, especially in the area of morals and ethics. This is why our fiat currency system is the antithesis of the monetary framework which Jefferson and Madison intended for us...

Reversal of fortune

Intellectual Conservative
by Bernie Reeves

Instead of lift-off to recovery, the ‘bail-out’ has left the rocket on the launch pad all gassed and nowhere to go. Banks are holding dollars our financial grandees proffered (derived from our taxes), the stock market is looking more like a Keno Board than an investment option, interest rates are so low no one can save money (and whatever happened to compound interest anyway?) and the cash you place in a bank is a deteriorating asset eroded by inflation anyway. And underneath any option the dazed citizens chooses there lurks some of the sleaziest and incompetent financial manipulators since the Italian bankers of the Renaissance. In other words, you can’t trust anyone anymore. And now you see why Christians were forbidden to lend money for centuries. Money made off money — when there is no tangible product created — creates an immoral edifice of greed and unethical behavior. At least the automakers actually produce something, yet our financial elite stated firmly the “bail-out” was for financial institutions only...

Panetta will turn the CIA into Obama’s secret police

Hawaii Reporter
by Jim Kouri

01/05/09

In a nation already suspicious of its intelligence agencies, is it wise to appoint a former Clinton crony as Director of Central Intelligence? Well, two Democratic officials leaked the story that President-elect Barack Obama has chosen former Clinton White House chief of staff Leon Panetta to run the CIA, according to Los Angeles’ newsradio KNX. Panetta is a surprise pick for the post, with no experience in the intelligence world and a reputation as a ‘dirty-tricks’ maven when he worked for President Bill Clinton...

Panetta Open to Tougher Methods in Some C.I.A. Interrogation

Leon E. Panetta, the White House pick to lead the Central Intelligence Agency, on Thursday left open the possibility that the agency could seek permission to use interrogation methods more aggressive than the limited menu that President Obama authorized under new rules issued last month.

Cracks in the Foundation

The End of Capitalism?

By Ann Robertson

The collective consciousness of the U.S. working class is on the brink of a profound transformation. We grew up being told that capitalism was the best of all possible systems, with apparent confirmation being supplied by the fall of the Soviet Union. But we are now entering a new reality that has the potential to overturn all the old, established assumptions perhaps, in the final analysis, even to overturn capitalism itself.

Norfolk villagers' phone mast victory

EMMA KNIGHTS

06 January 2009 01:27

Villagers look set to win a battle against a proposed new mobile phone mast after taking on the role of land agents.

Instead of writing petitions or lobbying their MP, residents and the parish council in Colkirk, near Fakenham, took a constructive view when faced with having a 30m mast built in full view of their homes.

Mobile phone firm O2 already has a mast in Colkirk but aimed to move it because the lease on the land ran out in December.

Villagers did not like the proposed new location, 45m from the current site which is shielded by trees, so came up with a new site.

Not only that; they negotiated with the land owners, the diocese of Norwich, and got an extension to O2's current lease from current landlord T Banham Ltd in Church Road to give the firm time to explore the alternative site in the same road.
