A CONTROVERSIAL mobile phone mast looks set to get the go-ahead in Haxby, despite more than 250 people objecting to the plans.

Vodafone wants to put the 40-foot (12.2 metres) mast in Oak Tree Lane, to improve its coverage for central and southern Haxby. It says the site chosen is the best available and says that if the mast were any lower, mobile phone users would get a worse signal.

But 233 residents have signed a petition saying they do not want the mast in their area and a further 23 individual objection letters have also been received.

Objections include claims that the mast will be visually intrusive, that it will reduce house prices in the area, that other phone companies may follow suit, and that if the mast is needed in Haxby, it should be placed in an area with fewer people nearby.

Vodafone was also accused of a lack of consultation, while Hemplands Primary School also objected to the plans.

„Die Einkommenssituation junger Beschäftigter hat sich im Vergleich zum Vorjahr deutlich verschlechtert. Das geht aus einer Sonderauswertung des DGB-Index Gute Arbeit 2008 „Junge Beschäftigte“ hervor, die die stellvertretende DGB-Vorsitzende Ingrid Sehrbrock und der DGB-Bundesjugend-sekretär René Rudolf am Dienstag in Berlin vorgestellt haben. Danach erhalten 62 Prozent der unter 30-Jährigen Vollzeitbeschäftigten ein Bruttoeinkommen von bis zu 2000 Euro. Im Vergleich zum Vorjahr bedeutet das einen Anstieg um 11 Prozentpunkte. Mehr Aufstocker trotz Aufschwung: Mehr als 1,35 Millionen Menschen waren im Juli zusätzlich zu ihrer Erwerbsarbeit auf ergänzendes Hartz IV angewiesen. Minijobs und Niedriglohn – die Arbeitsmarktpolitik von Rot-Grün und Großer Koalition treibt immer mehr Menschen in den Sozialbezug und entlastet die Arbeitgeber völlig unnötigerweise auf Kosten der Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Dass die Zahlen der Hartz-IV-Aufstocker ausgerechnet in einer Phase der florierenden Wirtschaft angestiegen sind, ist der eigentliche Skandal. Die Reallöhne sind in der Aufschwungphase derartig gesunken, dass immer mehr Menschen von ihrer Arbeit nicht leben können. Wenn die Große Koalition jetzt immer noch nicht die Notwendigkeit für einen gesetzlichen Mindestlohn sieht, dann kann ich ihr nur noch politische Fahrlässigkeit vorwerfen.

Zum endgültigen Scheitern des Datenschutzgipfels der Großen Koalition, erklärt Parteivorstandsmitglied und Datenschutzbeauftragter der LINKEN, Jan Korte (MdB):

Was haben Innenminister Schäuble (CDU), Wirtschaftsminister Glos (CSU) und die SPD nach den Datenschutzskandalen um die deutsche Telekom im September nicht großartig getönt. Datenschützer und Wirtschaftsvertreter gaben sich die Klinke in die Hand. Zahlreiche so genannte Datenschutzgipfel wurden eiligst einberufen, vollmundige Versprechungen der Öffentlichkeit gegeben. Ziel war es, den Handel mit Adressdaten zu unterbinden und den Bundesdatenschutzbeauftragten mit mehr finanziellen und materiellen Ressourcen auszustatten. Forderungen, die DIE LINKE bereits seit Jahren versuchte, auf die Tagesordnung zu setzen. Doch nun hat die Große Koalition der Mut verlassen. Zwar wurde in der vergangenen Woche der Bundesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz, Peter Schaar, mit übergroßer Mehrheit im Bundestag wiedergewählt. Eine Ressourcenaufstockung jedoch bekam er nicht. Im verabschiedeten Haushalt für das kommende Jahr sucht man entsprechende Verbesserungen vergeblich. Nun der zweite Paukenschlag. Gestern zog die Koalition ihren eigenen Gesetzentwurf zur Reform des Bundesdatenschutzgesetzes im Innenausschuss zurück. Ausreden hierfür wurden von CDU/CSU und SPD zahlreiche aufgetischt. Besonders Wirtschaftsminister Michael Glos ist eingeschüchtert, ob der zahlreichen Lobbyistenbriefe der Wirtschaft. Diese fürchtet um ihre Einnahmen, würde man den Adressdatenhandel – wie im September vereinbart – unterbinden. Auch ist nun fraglich, ob sich der Vorschlag durchsetzen wird, wonach ein Vertragsabschluss nicht mehr von der Einwilligung der Datenweitergabe an Dritte abhängen darf. Die SPD hat gar ihren Datenschutzexperten von dem Thema abgezogen und kalt gestellt. Man wolle, so ist zu vernehmen, erst einmal in ‚medias res’ gehen und die Vorschläge aus den Datenschutzgipfeln überdenken. Im Klartext: Die notwendige Reform soll auf den Sankt Nimmerleinstag verschoben werden. Die Große Koalition hat nichts aus den Datenschutzskandalen bei Telekom, Lidl und weiteren Unternehmen, sogar bei den eigenen kommunalen Meldeämtern, gelernt. DIE LINKE aber bleibt dabei: Wir brauchen schnell eine grundlegende Modernisierung des Bundesdatenschutzrechtes im Sinne der Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Wir stehen zu dem Verbot des Adressdatenhandels und fordern eine bessere Ausstattung der Bundesdatenschutzbeauftragten und seiner KollegInnen in den Ländern. SPD und Union haben sich erneut von der Wirtschaft, ihren Verbänden und zahlreichen Lobbyisten lenken lassen. Die Bedürfnisse der Bevölkerung jedoch scheinen sie weniger Ernst zu nehmen.

Entitled ‘No one in our house works,’ it describes the mundane drama of a family that does not work. The mother is 43 and has never had a job. It makes sobering reading. Despite the notorious cases of workless families living in palatial luxury at the taxpayers’ expense, this is surely the more usual picture: wasted lives, living on state handouts. We have nothing to envy. As the piece makes clear, this is not the life that this particular mother wanted (or indeed still wants), and it is certainly not the life her jobless children want. They have become like unemployed slaves, devoid of the essential freedoms that come through a life apart from the state...

A campaign to prevent a phone mast being put up has ended in yet another victory for a Norwich community.

Families in Earlham were urged to oppose the application by phone giant O2 for a mast at the front of Earlham Police Station.

Previous plans for a mast on the Earlham Road site have been repeatedly refused but the company applied to put a 12.5m slimline street works column with three antennae on the highway verge adjoining the station.

Following the latest application, thousand of leaflets were sent out to the community by campaigners urging them to write in objection to the appearance of the mast and its unsuitable position.

As a result, Norwich City Council's planning inspectors declined the application. A council spokesman said today: “The decision was made taking into consideration previous historical decisions on the site for telecoms applications.”

Zur Einigung von CDU/CSU und SPD über das im Bundesrat gescheiterte BKA-Gesetz, erklärt das Parteivorstandsmitglied der LINKEN, Jan Korte (MdB):

Der am gestrigen Abend ausgehandelte Kompromiss zwischen SPD und Union war zu erwarten. Aufgrund der offensichtlichen Eile, sieht das Ergebnis dementsprechend aus: An der Online-Durchsuchung als Überwachungsinstrument wird weiter festgehalten. Es wird lediglich unter einen Richtervorbehalt auch in Eilfällen gestellt. Auch an dem unzureichenden Zeugnisverweigerungsrecht für relevante Berufsgruppen wird festgehalten. Es bleibt dabei, dass Journalisten, Rechtsanwälte und Ärzte von diesem ausgenommen werden. Anwendung findet dieses Recht nur bei Seelsorgern, Strafverteidigern und Abgeordneten. Die schnelle Einigung bestätigt die Aussage des SPD-Innenpolitikers Wiefelspütz: Die SPD will das Gesetz! Vor diesem Hintergrund ist auch die Einigung über die Kompetenzrangeleien zwischen BKA und den LKA zu verstehen. Zukünftig soll das BKA nur in Fällen des internationalen Terrorismus die Ermittlungen aufnehmen. Wer, wie die Bundesregierung, noch nicht einmal eine Definition für Terrorismus vorweisen kann, der wird auch nicht in der Lage sein, diesen zu erkennen, zu verhindern und dessen Ursachen zu bekämpfen. Die Trennung zwischen internationalem und nationalem Terrorismus ist Augenwischerei und dient lediglich dem Ziel, das BKA-Gesetz auf „Teufel komm raus“ einzuführen. Festzuhalten bleibt, dass Bürgerrechte weiter abgebaut werden und den Gefahren des Terrorismus nicht adäquat begegnet werden wird. Trotz Richtervorbehalt bleibt die Online-Durchsuchung eine der größten Eingriffe in der Freiheit der Bürgerinnen und Bürger. Auf unseren Computern befinden sich eine Vielzahl sensibler, persönlicher Daten. Einen wirklichen Schutz dieser vor Missbrauch weist das BKA-Gesetz auch nach dem gefundenen Kompromiss nicht aus. Vor allem aber die bewusst belassenen Unzulänglichkeiten beim Zeugnisverweigerungsrecht stellen eine Gefahr für die Demokratie in der Bundesrepublik dar. Hiermit sollen bestimmte Berufsgruppen, wie Journalisten, an die Kandare genommen werden. Mit einer solchen Regelung wird bereits im Vorfeld von Berichterstattung versucht, den Journalisten einen Maulkorb zu verpassen. DIE LINKE kann diesem Kompromiss nicht zustimmen. Er ist völlig unzureichend. Die Ränkespiele zwischen CDU/CSU und SPD der vergangenen Wochen wurden auf dem Rücken der Freiheit der Bürgerinnen und Bürger ausgetragen. Zu keinem Zeitpunkt, dies wurde nun zum x-ten Male deutlich, ging es der SPD mit ihrem Veto im Bundesrat um Bürgerrechte und das Grundgesetz. DIE LINKE erneuert ihre Forderung nach einem sofortigen Moratorium für Sicherheitsgesetze und ruft zugleich alle Bürgerinnen und Bürger, die Berufsverbände der Journalisten, Ärzte und Anwälte auf, ihren Protest weiterzuführen. Es ist Zeit für eine neue Bürgerrechtsbewegung.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, we had sudden access to a whole bunch of intel that we didn’t before. We had access to the records, we had the operatives that wrote them available for interview. It wasn’t hard for us to ‘gather intel’ at that point because everybody who could interpret it had no job or if they did, they hadn’t been paid in months and if they had been, their currency was almost worthless and even if they had a valuable currency, it wasn’t easy to find anything much to buy. See, their economy had shut down. Nothing really functioned. So these guys marketed themselves and their knowledge for cheap. But that’s only part of the story. We learned that the Soviets spent lavishly on propagandizing their people, about the same percentage we did at the time. The difference is they knew that everybody knew their propaganda was bs... . Americans in the USA, then as now, believe our propaganda. So to extrapolate, I suggest that our reaction, or lack of reaction to our soldiers dying, and civilians dying by the boatload in Iraq, Afghanistan and historically, many other places, is an effect of how we are propagandized. To us, it’s entertainment. It’s no mistake or coincidence of history that our propaganda machine was birthed in Hollywood. It’s no mistake or coincidence our news media is owned by the entertainment media which is in turn owned by the corporate-financial-military complex. See, to most of us, the war was a kickass reality show, but it’s played for a few seasons and we’re bored...

US manufacturing hits 26-year low: ISM

The Institute of Supply Management said its manufacturing index slumped 2.7 points to 36.2 percent, far below the 50 percent level that separates expansion and contraction. The level was the lowest since May 1982.
