Bush’s pity party

The American Prospect
by Matthew Yglesias

12/04/08

It’s tiresome to need to point this out at this late date but, yes, George W. Bush and his administration misled the country while making the case for war with Iraq and, remarkably, are still trying to mislead people about it. In a Dec. 1 interview with ABC News’ Charlie Gibson, Bush said that ‘the biggest regret’ of his presidency was ‘the intelligence failure in Iraq.’ In other words, his biggest regret wasn’t regret over anything he did but rather regret over something that was done to him, a vague ‘intelligence failure’ rather than a misguided decision to invade another country...

The Great Crash of 2008

Robert Reich: "If this isn't a Great Crash I don't know how to define one. Stocks were down another 7 percent today. Since the peak of last year, major stock indexes have dropped 47 percent. We're in range of the Great Crash of 1929. Why is the Great Crash of 2008 happening? First, because investors are beginning to understand the enormity of the bubble economy that began to form in the late 1990s when all constraints were lifted on borrowing in order to buy everything that was assumed to be increasing in value -- starting with houses and including securities and shares of stock themselves."

Barack Obama's Kettle of Hawks

Jeremy Scahill, The Guardian UK: "Barack Obama has assembled a team of rivals to implement his foreign policy. But while pundits and journalists speculate endlessly on the potential for drama with Hillary Clinton at the state department and Bill Clinton's network of shady funders, the real rivalry that will play out goes virtually unmentioned. The main battles will not be between Obama's staff, but rather against those who actually want a change in US foreign policy, not just a staff change in the war room."

Truro mobile phone mast plan brings out the protestors

8:30am Tuesday 2nd December 2008

By Stephen Ivall

Plans by one of the UK’s largest communications company to site a mobile phone mast just metres from homes and schools, have been slammed as ‘completely ridiculous’.

Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Truro Terrye Teverson said the plan by Vodaphone for a 12 metre mast with three antennae just metres from Knoll Park, Truro Rugby Club, local schools and the new Trelander Children’s Centre should not be allowed.

Local residents from Knoll Park, Penair View and Trelander, who have been fighting the proposals, called on Mrs Teverson to step in and support their campaign.

“Having seen where Vodaphone are planning to site this mast I can only say the proposal seem completely ridiculous,” Mrs Teverson said.

China’s six-to-one advantage over the US

Asia Times
by Spengler

12/01/08

America outspends China on defense by a margin of more than six to one, the Pentagon estimates. [1] In another strategic dimension, though, China already holds a six-to-one advantage over the United States. Thirty-six million Chinese children study piano today, compared to only 6 million in the United States.[2] The numbers understate the difference, for musical study in China is more demanding. It must be a conspiracy. Chinese parents are selling plasma-screen TVs to America, and saving their wages to buy their kids pianos - making American kids stupider and Chinese kids smarter. Watch out, Americans - a generation from now, your kid is going to fetch coffee for a Chinese boss...

The poor are still with us

Boston Globe
by Jim Gomes

12/01/08

Economic developments of the last several months have gotten everyone’s attention. People are losing their homes as their mortgages are foreclosed. Workers are losing their jobs, and often their family’s health insurance, as unemployment rises to its highest level in 16 years. People who have never done so before stand in line at food pantries to receive donated canned goods and diapers. Millions of middle-class people are in danger of becoming … poor. The poor. Remember them? In this year’s campaign, the candidates spoke a lot about the middle class. This is no surprise. A majority of Americans describe themselves as middle class, and middle-class people vote and make campaign contributions at much higher rates than poor people...

Financial crisis may worsen food crunch it eclipsed

Christian Science Monitor

12/02/08

Call it crisis eclipse. The global food crisis that dominated headlines earlier this year has been overshadowed by this fall’s financial crisis, but it continues to exact a crippling toll on the world’s poor. And, although commodity prices for a wide range of crops have fallen by as much as 50 percent from record highs in June, the financial crisis is expected to make it dramatically worse: credit for farmers could dry up, meaning less money to buy fertilizer and seed, leading in turn to greater global shortages of food. Money for food aid could dry up as well. In June, governments and donors pledged $12.3 billion for the food crisis. So far, only $1 billion has actually been disbursed, as lending institutions and governments instead scramble to save ailing banks...

Next Round Of Foreclosures To Hit Retail

cbsnews.com — Black Friday's retail shoppers hunting for holiday bargains won't be enough to stave off what's likely to become the next economic crisis. Malls from Michigan to Georgia are entering foreclosure, commercial victims of the same events poisoning the housing market. Hotels in Tucson, Ariz., and Hilton Head, S.C., also are about to default on their mortgages. That pace is expected to quicken. The number of late payments and defaults will double, if not triple, by the end of next year, according to analysts from Fitch Ratings Ltd., which evaluates companies' credit.

Delay to phone mast at Whitworth beauty spot

6:30pm Sunday 30th November 2008

By Alex Willmott

CAMPAIGNERS have claimed a victory after plans to site a controversial mobile phone mast at a picturesque location were stalled.

Mobile phone giant Orange, conceded that plans to erect a phone mast at a beauty spot by Cowm Reservoir, Whitworth, are now up in the air.

Rebecca D’Arcy, corporate responsibility manager of Orange UK, said: “Due to legal issues with the site, it is not scheduled into our current forecast build programme.

“We will review the situation over the next six months and hopefully have a clearer idea of when the site might be constructed.”

Residents blasted the initial plans to construct a 15-metre high mast on land off High Barn Lane, claiming the development was misleading and rushed.

Sandra Heston, of Whit-worth Amateur Objectors Committee, said: “The entire process was not just hasty, but it was closed to the public.

Residents win battle against High Park mobile phone mast

Angry local residents had set up a formidable petition against the bid, citing health fears and a possible blow to house prices.

Old Park Lane mother-of-two Claire Ball, 28, launched the campaign, which was backed by Norwood Ward Liberal Democrat, Lord Ronnie Fearn.

Claire said: “I have two little boys and I am concerned about the health risks...

"I'm Still Tortured by What I Saw in Iraq"

Matthew Alexander, The Washington Post: "I should have felt triumphant when I returned from Iraq in August 2006. Instead, I was worried and exhausted. My team of interrogators had successfully hunted down one of the most notorious mass murderers of our generation, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq and the mastermind of the campaign of suicide bombings that had helped plunge Iraq into civil war. But instead of celebrating our success, my mind was consumed with the unfinished business of our mission: fixing the deeply flawed, ineffective and un-American way the US military conducts interrogations in Iraq. Obama said it was time to turn the page

Past and future

The Nation
by William Greider

11/24/08

A year ago, when Barack Obama said it was time to turn the page, his campaign declaration seemed to promise a fresh start for Washington. I, for one, failed to foresee Obama would turn the page backward. The president-elect’s lineup for key governing positions has opted for continuity, not change. Virtually all of his leading appointments are restoring the Clinton presidency, only without Mr. Bill. In some important ways, Obama’s selections seem designed to sustain the failing policies of George W. Bush. This is not the last word and things are changing rapidly. But Obama’s choices have begun to define him. His victory, it appears, was a triumph for the cautious center-right politics that has described the Democratic party for several decades. Those of us who expected more were duped, not so much by Obama but by our own wishful thinking...

Transition or Coup D'Etat?

Kevin Berends, Truthout: "During the transition period there is a silent coup d'etat occurring inside the federal government in the form of last-minute firings and dubious personnel placements. The easy response to this practice is: 'That always happens during the transition period and it isn't even newsworthy. That's how Washington works - always has, always will.' Perhaps, but considering how pervasively the Bush administration has flouted every branch of government, from ignoring Congressional subpoenas, to ignoring Supreme Court rulings, to violating the Geneva Conventions, to profuse and legally feeble signing statements - it's clear that embedding operatives loyal to the party and policies jettisoned by the voters in the election is tantamount to laying mines throughout the government."

Eleventh-Hour Rush to Enact a Rule That Obama Fought

Robert Pear, The New York Times: "The Labor Department is racing to complete a new rule, strenuously opposed by President-elect Barack Obama, that would make it much harder for the government to regulate toxic substances and hazardous chemicals to which workers are exposed on the job. The rule, which has strong support from business groups, says that in assessing the risk from a particular substance, federal agencies should gather and analyze 'industry-by-industry evidence' of employees’ exposure to it during their working lives. The proposal would, in many cases, add a step to the lengthy process of developing standards to protect workers’ health."

How the Financial Crisis Was Built Into the System

In 1910, seven men held a secret meeting on Jekyll Island off the coast of Georgia. It's estimated that those seven men represented one-sixth of the world's wealth. Six were Americans representing J.P. Morgan, John D. Rockefeller, and the U.S. government. One was a European representing the Rothschilds and Warburgs.

Blix: US 'politically incorrect' on Iran

"The axis of evil may be good for American domestic politics, but not for international politics. Even if you do not like other countries, you should continue to remain (politically) correct," he added.

Iran would 'hit US warships' at war

The general said the "heavy weight" of enemy warships provides the Iranian side with an ideal opportunity for launching successful counter-attacks.

Ten 'commando killers' caused 'India's 9/11'

Captured terrorist's account of Mumbai massacre reveals plan was to kill 5,000.

Ten 'commando killers' caused 'India's 9/11'

Despite suggestions that one or more of the terrorists may have been British, authorities in the UK and India damped down talk of such a connection.

This is India's 9/11? Think again

In the past decade, India has seen an epidemic of Hindu terrorism that reached its nadir - I hope - in 2002, when almost 2,000 Muslims were slaughtered in the state of Gujarat. That massacre, like so many others, had been whipped up by Hindu-nationalist parties, in response to an earlier, smaller instance of Muslim violence.

Every Trick in the Book

The creation of equity bubbles is just a clever means of social engineering, just like regressive taxation. It separates the wheat from the chaff, exacerbating dormant animosities between the classes.

Anonymous Banker Weighs In On The Coming Credit Card Debacle

By Joe Nocera

A few weeks ago, I published an e-mail message sent to me from an executive who works in the banking industry - and had become disgusted by what he sees all around him. This weekend, that same banker sent me another e-mail message, which he has also agree to let me publish. It's another wake-up call. Too bad nobody is listening.

Playing Catch-Up with Barack Obama

By Simon Floth

A mystery humbles the Clintons, conquers big media, trumps racism, leaves a bifucated mess of the GOP, and casually takes the Whitehouse. His two-phase strategy was simple: tantalise liberals with a prospect of real change and play centrist to the rest. It was executed to perfection and everyone is left scratching their heads.

Obama's First Problem is US War Crimes

The president-elect has to take a stand on Bush's dark legacy

By Andrew Sullivan

There is, in the end, a simple and sobering truth: these people have to be brought to justice if the rule of law is to survive in America. In his constitutional soul, Obama knows this.

George W. Bush Belongs in Prison

By Joel S. Hirschhorn

To ensure that no future president behaves like George W. Bush we must punish him. Not merely through the words of historians, but through the physical punishment that he has inflicted on so many millions of people. In previous eras citizens would have demanded "off with his head." Now we must demand "lock him up." How poetic for a pro-torture ex-president.

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article21358.htm

We Were Promised Change, And Change Is What We Will Hold Our New President To

Of all the things that must change, the FIRST thing that must change now is that the rule of law and respect for the Constitution must be fully restored. Obama has set up a site where he professes to want to know what his priorities should be. Therefore let us all go there and make the number one idea this one.

Appoint a Special Prosecutor for the Crimes of the Bush Administration

The direct link is rather longish, so we have set up a special action page that will open up a new window and forward you directly (or else look for the link at the very top) to the page where you can vote for this most critical idea.

Special Prosecutor Voting Link: http://www.usalone.com/special_prosecutor.php

Important: To cast a vote, when you get to the voting site, click on the box with the current number count to the left of the main header for the idea, NOT on the widget on the right hand side of the page lower down, which just reloads the same page.

President-elect Obama recently said, "If I found out that there were high officials who knowingly, consciously broke existing laws, engaged in coverups of those crimes with knowledge forefront, then I think a basic principle of our Constitution is nobody above the law."

Attorney General-designate Eric Holder recently said top Bush Administration officials "authorized the use of torture, approved of secret electronic surveillance of American citizens, secretly detained American citizens without due process of law, denied the Writ of Habeas Corpus to hundreds of accused enemy combatants, and authorized the use of procedures that both violate international law and the United States Constitution."

We must now hold them to honor their words of accountability.

The Bush administration has refused to investigate its own crimes and President Bush may issue blanket pardons before he leaves, indeed we fully expect him to even try to pardon himself. But that is all the more reason why we must keep as much heat as possible on the potential for real post inauguration prosecutions. No pardon could possibly be broad enough to exonerate the entire litany of the crimes of the outgoing White House without itself raising serious constitutional questions.

President Obama must appoint a Special Prosecutor - ideally Patrick Fitzgerald - to fully investigate these crimes and prosecute those responsible to demonstrate that we are truly a Nation of Laws and no one - including the President - is above the law. And you can make sure that happens by going to this link and helping to make the appointment of a special prosecutor the number one idea on the Obama "change" site by a very large and dramatic margin.

Special Prosecutor Voting Link: http://www.usalone.com/special_prosecutor.php

And then after you vote, if you haven't requested your "Impeach Both!!!" cap yet (we just shipped out another 1000 this week), if you want to go back and get one the page left behind by the link above will allow you to do that. Because anyone who thinks that the Bush administration has even now finished committing high crimes has greatly misunderestimated their depth of incorrigible malfeasance.

Be careful what you ask for because you just might get it. Our new president has asked us to be involved in telling him what to do. Let us find out if that was for real or not, by continuing to speak out, in greater numbers than ever before.

Please take action NOW, so we can win all victories that are supposed to be ours, and forward this alert as widely as possible.

Mumbai Massacres as the Defeat of Counter-terrorism

By Gilad Atzmon

Terror is a message written on the wall but for some reason most Westerners fail to read it. Our enthusiasm to bring Coca-Cola to the Muslim world must be curbed immediately. We should keep our liberal democratic fantasy to ourselves, especially now when it had been proven as a faulty concept.
