Suit Claims Halliburton, KBR Sickened Base

Kelly Kennedy, Army Times: "A Georgia man has filed a lawsuit against contractor KBR and its former parent company, Halliburton, saying the companies exposed everyone at Joint Base Balad in Iraq to unsafe water, food and hazardous fumes from the burn pit there. Joshua Eller, who worked as a civilian computer-aided drafting technician with the 332nd Air Expeditionary Wing, said military personnel, contractors and third-country nationals may have been sickened by contamination at the largest U.S. installation in Iraq, home to more than 30,000 service members, Defense Department civilians and contractors."

Third mobile phone company planning a mast for busy street

Saturday, December 06, 2008, 08:34

A BUSY Exeter street could soon have three telephone masts within the space of 225m.

Phone company O2 already has permission to put up a structure in Barrack Road, just south of the bus stop on the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital side of the road.

And Vodafone has been given the go ahead on appeal for a mast 25m north of the O2 site.

Now, Orange wants to put up a third, 200m from the Vodafone site, on the same side of the road. All the masts will be about 40ft tall.

The phone companies have been looking for new sites because the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital has withdrawn permission for the masts on the roof of the pathology lab.

While Exeter City Council approved the O2 mast, planners objected to Vodafone's proposal, arguing it would add to the street clutter and detract from Barrack Road's appearance.

The Voting Rights Act: Still Needed in Obama's America

Laughlin McDonald, Jurist: "When Congress amended and extended the Voting Rights Act in 2006, it found, among other things, that evidence of racially polarized voting justified continuing its special federal oversight provision. Now, some opponents of this provision - known as Section 5 - have argued that Barack Obama's election as president in 2008 shows that voting is no longer divided along racial lines, and that it is not necessary to require certain states with egregious histories of racial discrimination to get federal approval of changes in their voting practices. Ripon school fights plan to put phone mast just 60 metres away

Published Date: 05 December 2008

A RIPON primary school is fighting an application for a mobile phone mast just 60 metres from its playground, amid concerns over a possible danger to children's health.

Parents, teachers and governors at Greystone Community Primary School are opposing Vodafone's plan to place a 47ft high '3G' mast next to the entrance to Morrisons on Harrogate Road.

The closing date for objections is today, with the application due to be decided by the head of planning services at Harrogate Council on December 15, in consultation with the chairman of the council's planning committee.

Audrey Blackburn, chairman of governors at Greystone School, said: "Our greatest priority is our children and we can't afford to use them as guinea pigs until we find out that these things are positively harmful."

Phone mast bid for church spire

by RICHARD CASTLE

MOBILE phone companies are trying to erect masts in Winshill - including one in a church spire - prompting health concerns over potentially harmful radiation.

Winshill's elevated position makes it prime pickings for mobile moguls and St Mark's Church and Abbot Beyne school have both been approached by unnamed phone companies.

Church elders will "probably not" allow the project to go ahead and PTA chiefs rejected a similar application two months ago.

After her church turned phone company bosses away 10 years ago, warden and Winshill resident Mary Mills says potential damage to the spire and bell tower make her sceptical.

Obama Partially Rescinds Promise to "End the War"

Thom Shanker, International Herald Tribune: "On the campaign trail, Senator Barack Obama offered a pledge that electrified and motivated his liberal base, vowing to 'end the war' in Iraq. But as he moves closer to the White House, President-elect Obama is making it clearer than ever that tens of thousands of American troops will be left behind in Iraq, even if he can make good on his campaign promise to pull all combat forces out within 16 months."

The Bush-Obama National Security Strategy

CounterPunch
by Harry Browne

12/04/08

The funny thing is, this allegedly significant change in national security strategy, toward ‘social work’, actually comes straight out of Bush’s ‘National Security Strategy’ — not some vague lame-duck version either, but the full-blown and now-notorious document published by the White House in September 2002, The National Security Strategy of the United States of America (known as the NSS). Actually, this is funny only in the sense of ‘let’s all laugh at the New York Times,’ because for America and the world the implications are deadly serious. That 2002 NSS is most famous, or infamous, for codifying the ‘Bush Doctrine’ of military pre-emption and for its bald declaration that no military rival to the US will be permitted to arise. It’s already safe to say Obama will not renounce those positions. But because in autumn 2002 the document — just a few thousand words long — was being read largely as an argument for invading Iraq, the civilian side of its imperial vision was largely overlooked. That part of the vision looks remarkably similar to the one now being sketched by the Obama-Clinton team...

Obama's Familiar Orbit

Michael Winship, Truthout: "I keep thinking about that tool bag. You know - the one that the astronaut accidentally let loose while she was repairing the International Space Station last month. Now it's in orbit, more than 200 miles above the Earth ... For now, it's up there, floating silently and uselessly, which, if you think of government as a sort of national tool kit for protecting and improving the lives of its citizens, could be seen as a pretty good metaphor for the last eight years. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, nothing done - except with the kind of blunt hammers that see everything as a nail and cause more harm than good."

What Change?

by Pastor Chuck Baldwin

There will be no real change in Washington, D.C., until the CFR and their elitist cronies are thoroughly and universally removed from power. And the only way this will happen is if we elect an Independent President of the United States (someone who truly understands the New World Order and is dedicated to defeating it), because the two major parties will never allow someone opposed to the CFR to become their nominee. So, while the occupant at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue may have changed, there will be no real change to the direction of these United States. Count on it!......

Phone mast gets backing

Published Date: 05 December 2008

By Carl Gavaghan

WHITBY Town councillors have given their grudging support to an application by Vodafone for a replacement mast at Whitby Town's Turnbull Ground.

While the councillors shared residents’ anxiety about the new mast and the health implications the planning committee said it could only make a decision based on planning regulations.
