The Fed announced that it will reduce AIG's original $85 billion bridge loan to $60 billion, and it will cut the interest rate by 5.5 percentage points. In addition, the Treasury will use its special authority under last month's $700 billion bailout law — the so-called Troubled Asset Relief Program — to purchase $40 billion in preferred stock.

In the midst of this late-September drama, the Treasury Department issued a five-sentence notice that attracted almost no public attention. But corporate tax lawyers quickly realized the enormous implications of the document: Administration officials had just given American banks a windfall of as much as $140 billion. The sweeping change to two decades of tax policy escaped the notice of lawmakers for several days, as they remained consumed with the controversial bailout bill. When they found out, some legislators were furious. Some congressional staff members have privately concluded that the notice was illegal.

Fannie Mae Loss Widens to $29 Billion

news.bbc.co.uk — U.S. mortgage finance firm Fannie Mae has reported a significant increase in third-quarter losses in the wake of the slowing housing sector. Losses hit $28.99 billion in the three months to 30 September from a loss of $1.4 billion a year earlier, largely due to a tax-related charge of $21.4 billion. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were bailed out by the US government in a record U.S. corporate rescue deal in September. Both firms buy mortgages from approved lenders then sell them to investors. Neither Freddie Mac nor Mannie Mae lend directly to borrowers.

Two More Banks Fail

money.cnn.com — The tally of failed banks in 2008 rose to 19 as the government announced that a Texas and a California bank had been shuttered. Franklin Bank, a Houston, Texas-based bank and Security Pacific Bank, a Los Angeles, Calif.-based bank were shut down by state regulators, marking the 18th and 19th bank failures this year. Franklin Bank had total assets of $5.1 billion and total deposits of $3.7 billion as of Sept. 30, 2008, according to a statement on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.'s Web site. Ironically, Lewis Ranieri, the 61-year-old co-founder and chairman of parent Franklin Bank Corp., is credited with inventing mortgage-backed securities two decades ago, back when he worked at Salomon Brothers, where he is a former vice chairman.

Bailout Watch: Bush's Subtle Scheme to Stop Obama Reforms

„Ungeachtet breiter Kritik von Datenschützern und Bürgerrechtlern wird die Regierungsmehrheit heute im Bundestag das neue BKA-Gesetz verabschieden. Auf einer Sondersitzung des Innenausschusses am Montag haben CDU/CSU und SPD noch letzte Änderungen am Gesetzentwurf vorgestellt, die aber nur marginal sind. Die Opposition ist geschlossen gegen das Gesetz. Zur »Abwehr von Gefahren des internationalen Terrorismus«, wie es heißt, darf das Bundeskriminalamt (BKA) künftig weit im Vorfeld von Straftaten tätig werden. Vorgesehen sind unter anderem Rasterfahndung, heimliche Observationen, das Anbringen von Peilsendern und Telefonüberwachung. Besonders brisant sind Neuregelungen, die Geheimdienst-Qualitäten aufweisen: Das BKA darf in Privatwohnungen heimlich Videokameras anbringen (»Spähangriff«), und zwar nicht nur in Wohnungen von Verdächtigen, sondern auch von deren »Kontakt- und Begleitpersonen«. Ärzte-Präsident Hoppe gegen geplantes BKA-Gesetz

Die Ärzte machen mobil gegen eine von ihnen befürchtete Aufweichung der ärztlichen Schweigepflicht. Die Koalitionspläne für ein neues BKA-Gesetz seien ein "Angriff auf die Bürgerrechte, die ärztliche Schweigepflicht und das Patienten-Arzt-Verhältnis" kritisierte Bundesärztekammer-Präsident Jörg-Dietrich Hoppe am Montag (10. November) in Berlin. Das Gesetzesvorhaben der Koalition festige "den Zwei-Klassen-Status der Ärzte" bei verdeckten Ermittlungsmaßnahmen des Staates.

Most of the gains are just part of the political business cycle, and so indicate nothing much other than that the candidate from the incumbent party doesn’t do well when saddled with an unpopular war and a recession. I think the more likely permanent gains, among the young and rich, for example, have a lot to do with the general (I think salutary) social liberalization of American moral culture. Families in one city ward are gearing up for yet another fight against plans to install a mobile phone mast near their homes.

Concerns have been raised over an application by phone giant Orange, which is the third application in just one month in Wensum ward, to put up a 20-metre mast on the industrial estate on Guardian Road.

Rupert Read a Green city councillor for the ward has vowed to fight the application and will this week get families on board to oppose the plans.

Neighbors worried about cell phone antenna radiation and angry at city officials who have allowed it in their neighborhoods poured out their frustrations at the Berkeley Planning Commission meeting on Wednesday night.

Planning commissioners listened, questioned, then decided to hold off on any decision for another two weeks—in part because of a recent federal appellate court ruling.

But whatever the commission decides, Deputy Planning Director Wendy Cosin said she is obliged to make a recommendation to the City Council in January.

According to Seymour Hersh there is a conga line of insiders waiting until January 20th to spill the beans on the gross criminality of the Bush/Cheney administration. Waiting . . . because if they did it now the two of them would be tarred and feathered on the way out the door.

But we the people do not have to wait. We can and must demand the immediate impeachment of both Bush and Cheney for what is already known. At the very least the defiance of congressional subpoenas at the behest of the White House is an open and shut case for accountability now.

If they are so hot on impeaching someone, let them speak out now, when it truly is called for, or shut the hell up in 73 days.
