Cold War Hawks Nesting With Obama

Robert Scheer, Truthdig: "So, Vladimir Putin was right: It was Georgia that started the war with Russia, and once again it was President Bush who got caught in a lie. As The New York Times reported last week, 'Newly available accounts by independent military observers of the beginning of the war between Georgia and Russia this summer call into question the long-standing Georgian assertion that it was acting defensively against separatist and Russian aggression.'"

The Danger of Keeping Robert Gates

Robert Parry, Consortium News: "Press reports say Barack Obama may retain George W. Bush's Defense Secretary Robert Gates as a gesture to war-time continuity, bipartisanship and respect for the Washington insider community, which has embraced Gates as something of a new Wise Man. However, if Obama does keep Gates on, the new President will be employing someone who embodies many of the worst elements of U.S. national security policy over the past three decades, including responsibility for what Obama himself has fingered as a chief concern, 'politicized intelligence.'"

Leslie Thatcher, reviewing Marie-Monique Robin's "The World According to Monsanto" for Truthout: "How did a nation of would-be self-sufficient yeoman farmers and master craftsmen become the wellspring of the new thralldom? Can we blame corporate barons and their enablers in government for our dependence on 'systems that mask and disperse responsibility while simultaneously spreading and intensifying risk' or have our own frivolity and negligence perverted the American dream?"

How the Iraq war humiliated the British

The fact that we're hanging around there still today (over 4,100 soldiers) is a testimony to President Bush's desire not to lose the fig leaf of his biggest partner in the entire endeavour. Only now, with Obama preparing to move into the White House, can the British finally leave - a reality that Maliki confirmed in October when he sealed the humiliation, tersely informing the British that "their services were no longer required".

Too Poor for Bankruptcy

By David Glenn Cox

Most all of our problems seem to evolve from a falling standard of living in America's working class, and yet when we call for help for America's working poor we are told that it can't be helped. Here in Atlanta a local food pantry advertises that 40% of all its recipients are employed.

Public refused entry to Leixlip council meeting with mast experts

Published Date: 13 November 2008

By Henry Bauress

AN apparent conflict has arisen over who asked for a meeting on controversial telecommunications masts in Leixlip to be held in private.
Leixlip Town Councillors met representatives of Vilicom, a company advising the Office of Public Works (OPW) on telecommunications in private on Tuesday, 4 November.

Journalists and a member of the public arriving for the Council's monthly meeting were surprised that representatives from Vilicom met the Town Council 'in committee'.

The Council had invited the OPW to send its experts to a meeting but instead of answering questions at the regular monthly open public meeting, the Council opted to meet the company at an 'in-committee' (private) protocol meeting being held prior to the normal monthly meeting.

A Veterans Day tribute

AntiWar.Com
by David R. Henderson

11/11/08

Every Veterans Day, I try to do something special to remember or honor a veteran. I don’t like the standard flag-waving event that this day has become for many people. In many Veterans Day speeches, the speakers talk about the hundreds of thousands of American veterans who gave their lives for our freedom. The problem with that is twofold: (1) Very few of those who were killed in war literally gave their lives but instead had their lives ripped away, and (2) very few of them fought for our freedom. So my tribute this time is to a veteran who did not give his life and knew that he wasn’t fighting for our freedom. That veteran is Richard H. Timberlake, Jr. ...

Refusing orders to serve again

Corvallis Gazette Times (Oregon)
by Benjamin Lewis and Brandon Neely

11/11/08

On this day, Veterans Day, we would like to express to the American public why we, veterans of the Global War on Terror, have chosen to refuse orders to reactivate into military service. We are direct witnesses to the horrors of this war, having experienced its atrocities at their source, and we have decided that we can no longer carry out these illegal and immoral policies.

We believe that veterans and active duty G.I.s are in a key position to stop illegal and unjust war, and we are inspired by the resistance of troops who stood against the war in Vietnam. One of the pre-eminent reasons for the U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam was increasing dissent among the active duty troops stationed abroad and at home. By the end of the war, there were entire units refusing to participate in combat, many going as far as outright mutiny...

Are jobless next for a bailout?

Christian Science Monitor

The nation’s economic focus is turning from saving the banking system to how to provide a rapidly rising tide of jobless with benefits and a road map to employment. And, just as there was a flashing-red-light urgency to the banking crisis, economists say the same haste has to be taken to deal with what is becoming a massive lay-off problem. Dealing with the jobless has already become a priority for President-elect Barack Obama. Congress is now likely to enact a fiscal stimulus package, including extending unemployment benefits, in either its lame duck session or early in the new year. The risk to the economy is that layoffs cause more Americans to tighten their belts. As they cut back on their purchasing, business reduces its production, laying off yet more workers...

Where Homes Are Worth Less Than the Mortgage

While home values have declined across the country, in some places the declines are so sharp that people owe more on their mortgages than their houses are worth.

One third of homes sold for a loss

New Federal Mortgage Plan Offers Relief to Only a Few

Kevin G. Hall, McClatchy Newspapers: "The Bush administration on Tuesday announced another plan to modify what it thinks will be hundreds of thousands of distressed mortgages held or backed by mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. But the plan, more than 15 months into a deep nationwide housing slump, is far short of the moratorium on foreclosures sought by President-elect Barack Obama and the Democrats who next year will have stronger control of Congress."

Lobbyists Swarm the Treasury for a Helping of the Bailout Pie

Mark Lander and David D. Kirkpatrick, The New York Times: "When the government said it would spend $700 billion to rescue the nation's financial industry, it seemed to be an ocean of money. But after one of the biggest lobbying free-for-alls in memory, it suddenly looks like a dwindling pool. Many new supplicants are lining up for an infusion of capital as billions of dollars are channeled to other beneficiaries like the American International Group, and possibly soon American Express."

The US Government Will Default On Its Debt

A Quiet Windfall For U.S. Banks

With Attention on Bailout Debate, Treasury Made Change to Tax Policy

By Amit R. Paley

The financial world was fixated on Capitol Hill as Congress battled over the Bush administration's request for a $700 billion bailout of the banking industry. In the midst of this late-September drama, the Treasury Department issued a five-sentence notice that attracted almost no public attention.

Global systemic crisis Alert For Summer 2009

The US Government Will Default On Its Debt

By GEAB

Our researchers anticipate that, before next summer 2009, the US government will default and be prevented to pay back its creditors (holders of US Treasury Bonds, of Fanny May and Freddy Mac shares, etc.). Of course such a bankruptcy will provoke some very negative outcome for all USD-denominated asset holders.

Remembering The Victims of Those Who Profit From War

By Chycho

How unfortunate that we have a need for such a day, especially since "War is a racket It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives." So stated Major General Smedley D. Butler, USMC, the most decorated Marine in US history.

Minnesota ripe for election fraud

Fox News
by John R. Lott, Jr.

11/10/08

Minnesota is becoming to 2008 politics what Florida was in 2000 or Washington State in 2004 — a real mess. The outcome will determine whether Democrats get 58 members of the U.S. Senate, giving them an effective filibuster-proof vote on many issues. When voters woke up on Wednesday morning after the election, Senator Norm Coleman led Al Franken by what seemed like a relatively comfortable 725 votes. … Late Sunday night, the difference had gone down to just 221 — a total change over 4 days of 504 votes. Amazingly, this all has occurred even though there hasn’t even yet been a recount. Just local election officials correcting claimed typos in how the numbers were reported. Counties will certify their results today, and their final results will be sent to the secretary of state by Friday. The actual recount won’t even start until November 19...

GOP needs Night of Long Knives

Human Events
by Deroy Murdock

11/07/08

The GOP has been laid low, thanks to politicians who swapped their principles for power and lost both. As the chief electoral vehicle for conservative and free-market ideas, the Republican Party cannot regain America’s confidence, nor should it, until the guilty have been catapulted into the nearest volcano. Comrade George W. Bush has spearheaded the most aggressive federal expansion since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. As a delivery system for socialism, he has been the most effective Trojan Horse since that pine steed rolled into Troy...

Hospitals Deport Seriously Ill, Uninsured Immigrants

Deborah Sontag, The New York Times: "Soon after Antonio Torres, a husky 19-year-old farmworker, suffered catastrophic injuries in a car accident last June, a Phoenix hospital began making plans for his repatriation to Mexico. Mr. Torres was comatose and connected to a ventilator. He was also a legal immigrant whose family lives and works in the purple alfalfa fields of this southwestern town. But he was uninsured. So the hospital disregarded the strenuous objections of his grief-stricken parents and sent Mr. Torres on a four-hour journey over the California border into Mexicali."

Bush Spy Revelations Anticipated When Obama Is Sworn In

Ryan Singel, Wired.com: "When Barack Obama takes the oath of office on January 20, Americans won't just get a new president; they might finally learn the full extent of George W. Bush's warrantless domestic wiretapping. Now privacy advocates are hopeful that President Obama will be more forthcoming with information. But for the quickest and most honest account of Bush's illegal policies, they say don't look to the incoming president. Watch instead for the hidden army of would-be whistle-blowers who've been waiting for Inauguration Day to open the spigot on the truth."

A Recipe for the Next Great Depression

http://www.lewrockwell.com/dilorenzo/dilorenzo157.html

The Mini-Depression and the Maximum-Strength Remedy

Robert Reich, TPM Cafe: "This is not the Great Depression of the 1930s, but nor is it turning out to be merely a bad recession of the kind we've experienced periodically over the last half century. Call it a Mini Depression. The employment report last Friday shows job losses accelerating, along with the number of Americans working part time who'd rather be and need to be working full time. Retail sales have fallen off a cliff. Stock prices continue to drop. General Motors is on the brink of bankruptcy. The rate of home foreclosures is mounting."
