Bush's disapproval rating worst of any president in 70 years

In a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday, 28% of Americans approve of the job Bush is doing; 69% disapprove. The approval rating matches the low point of his presidency, and the disapproval sets a new high for any president since Franklin Roosevelt.

Iraq Wants U.S. to Compromise More on Security Deals

Clueless in America

By Bob Herbert

Ignorance in the United States is not just bliss, it's widespread. A recent survey of teenagers by the education advocacy group Common Core found that a quarter could not identify Adolf Hitler, a third did not know that the Bill of Rights guaranteed freedom of speech and religion, and fewer than half knew that the Civil War took place between 1850 and 1900.

The fiscal consequences of Bush

Financial Times
by Clive Crook

04/13/08

Competition for ‘most damaging legacy of the Bush administration’ is lively. Iraq is the front-runner, of course, but bear in mind the wreckage of fiscal policy — although to use that term is to imply that the US even has a fiscal policy, when it does not. It would be more accurate to talk of fiscal consequences or fiscal footprint (an apt metaphor) than to imply anything as deliberate as ‘policy’... [free registration required]

Dangerously counterproductive war on terror

04/21/08

At the passing of the 25th anniversary of the 1983 bombing of the U.S. embassy in Beirut, Lebanon — the first large suicide bombing to target Americans — the time is right to ask the perennial question: has the Bush administration’s ‘war on terror’ since 9/11 made Americans safer? Although the Bush administration regularly boasts that its war on terror has been effective because no large terrorists attacks on U.S. soil have occurred since 9/11, such terrorism in North America has historically been a rare event. It’s like bragging that efforts to prevent lightning strikes have succeeded because a dwelling has not been struck or burned...

Protest Home Depot's Complicity in Destruction of Patagonian Wilderness by Proposed Chilean Dams

ACTION ALERT
PLEASE PARTICIPATE AND FORWARD WIDELY!

For Earth Day, Protest Home Depot's Complicity in Destruction of Patagonian Wilderness by Proposed Chilean Dams

By Forests.org, project of Ecological Internet http://forests.org/ April 21, 2008

TAKE ACTION Patagonia's wild rivers to be dammed, destroying ancient temperate forests, for 50 years of electricity; please let supposedly environmentally responsible Home Depot know they should not be doing business with the project's primary Chilean advocate.

http://forests.org/alerts/send.asp?id=chile_patagonia_dam

One of Chile's last true pristine and intact wildernesses is to be dammed and logged to provide hydroelectricity. The dams -- two on the Baker River and three on the Pascua River -- would irretrievably damage Patagonia, one of the Earth's wildest and most beautiful places. The HidroAysén project will flood river valleys containing several thousand hectares of ancient primary forests. The project's transmission line would require extensive clearcutting of additional pristine Chilean native forests, clearing more than a 1,500-mile swath that will impact fourteen national parks and wilderness reserves.

Shockingly, the main Chilean project proponent -- the Matte Group -- does extensive business with U.S. mega-corp Home Depot, broadly perceived as being "green". In consultation with International Rivers, Ecological Internet is working to get the Matte Group to withdraw from the project by highlighting their business interests with Home Depot. Please challenge Home Depot to live up to their green image on Earth Day 2008, and refuse to participate in the greenwashing of Patagonian wild river and ancient forest destruction. Insist Home Depot cease doing business with Matte until they withdraw from HidroAysén.

US News Media's Latest Disgrace

Robert Parry writes for Consortium News, "After prying loose 8,000 pages of Pentagon documents, the New York Times has proven what should have been obvious years ago: the Bush administration manipulated public opinion on the Iraq War, in part, by funneling propaganda through former senior military officers who served as expert analysts on TV news shows."

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/042108E.shtml

--------

Pentagon Propaganda & Antiwar Analysts

By The Nation

The article reports that most of the news organizations either didn't know or didn't care about their paid analysts taking direction from the administration while claiming to neutrally assess its policies; or taking expensive trips paid by the administration; or meeting secretly with senior administration officials and plotting military or political strategy; or competing for military contracts.

Behind Analysts, the Pentagon's Hidden Hand

Hidden behind that appearance of objectivity, though, is a Pentagon information apparatus that has used those analysts in a campaign to generate favorable news coverage of the administration's wartime performance, an examination by The New York Times has found.

Gentechnikgegner beendeten in Gatersleben Genweizenanbau

Grüne Klimapolitik stinkt zum Himmel - Vattenfall will schwarz-grüne Koalition in Hamburg austricksen

Baiting Obama

Steve Weissman writes for Truthout, "... using 'bittergate,' Wright and Ayres to drag down Barack Obama has nothing to do with fair-minded debate and discussion. Nor is all this a needed vetting of Obama, as Hillary persists in saying. The current noise is nothing less than the predictable rebirth of an American political tradition. Call it redbaiting, witch-hunting or McCarthyism, the old slime is back and the reasons go far beyond the demands of Gotcha journalism and electoral combat."

Bundesjustizministerin Zypries will die bestehenden Anti-Terror-Paragrafen weiter verschärfen

11. März fünf Jahre später: Bei Bombenanschlägen in Madrider Vorortbahnen kamen 191 Menschen ums Leben.

Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger kritisiert geplantes BKA-Gesetz

Three revolutions

QandO
by McQ

04/19/08

I’m interested in exploring an idea that we in the United States have been subject to not just one revolution, but at least three. The first and obvious one is the revolution which established our independence from England. It was a revolution which rejected the concept of monarchy and big government. It embraced freedom. The revolutionaries broke with England through the Declaration of Independence which I have always seen as the soul of our country. The body — the bones and muscles — were to be found in the laws the Constitution laid down. The concept of very limited and non-intrusive government was also to be found in the Bill of Rights, which outlines constraints on the government, not the citizens. And central to the theme of government’s place in this new society was the radical idea that government only existed by the consent of the people...
