Residents to appeal decision on antenna

By Liz Neely
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

April 24, 2008

El Cajon and La Mesa residents vowed this week to fight a cellular phone company's plan to install a wireless antenna in their Fletcher Hills neighborhood.

T-Mobile wants to build what's called a wireless communications facility at 2053 Wedgemere Road. The project includes a 30-foot-tall wireless antenna that would be disguised in a fake chimney attached to a two-story home. A 200-square-foot structure in the backyard would hold the wireless equipment.

Military "Analysts," the Media and the Selling of Bush's Wars

Max J. Castro writes for Progreso Weekly: "The Bush administration has made a mess of many things, from the Iraq war to Katrina. Yet there is one area in which Bush and his people have met with, at least, limited success - namely the manipulation of public opinion, especially when it comes to the 'war on terror.'"

Pentagon spin taints TV

Since the lead-up to the war in 2002, the major networks have trotted out dozens of retired military officers as independent analysts - many of whom, unknown to viewers, were being prepped by the Pentagon to put out favorable messages about the Bush administration's conduct of the war.

Common Dreams
by Sean Gonsalves

The relationship between the media and the military has always been rife with manipulation and antagonism, though I’ve always considered the idea of an “adversarial press” to be far more myth than literal truth.Take the well-worn accusation that an “adversarial press” turned public opinion against the Vietnam War. Never mind the most important lesson of modern guerrilla war history — namely that, short of genocide, military might doesn’t defeat guerrilla insurgencies. It only multiplies the number of insurgents...

Study Based on Farmers’ Experience Exposes Risks of GM Crops

ISIS Press Release 24/04/08

The first study of its kind in North America, possibly in the world, shows how the risks of GM technology outweigh the benefits especially in the longer term. Dr. Mae-Wan Ho

Canada, along with the United States and Argentina were the first countries in the world to commercialise GM crops. But more than a decade later, risk assessment for GM crops is still ignoring farmers’ knowledge and their years of experience in growing GM crops.

Ian Mauro and Stéphane McLachlan at the University of Manitoba, Winnepeg, in Canada, have now completed a study of farmers from Manitoba and across Canada based on interviews (n=15) and survey by mail (n=370) conducted between 2002 and 2003. It is especially useful in identifying the actual risks and benefits for farmers who are not yet committed to growing GM crops.

“We’re very pleased with this study.” Mauro says. “Using quantitative and qualitative methods, we’ve documented the benefits and risks associated herbicide-tolerant (HT) canola. We found that farmers have been primarily placed at risk due to the proliferation of HT volunteers. Smaller farms and those with a longer history of GM canola use were at highest risk.”

Canadian farmers rapidly adopted HT canola following its commercial release in 1995. Three varieties of HT canola have been introduced: Roundup Ready (RR), Liberty Link (LL) and Clearfield (CF), tolerant to the herbicide glyphosate, glufosinate and imidazolinone respectively. RR and LL are genetically modified, whereas CF has been created by induced mutation. Currently, they represent 96 percent of the 5.25 million ha of canola grown in Canada: approximately 50 percent RR, 32 percent LL and 14 percent CF. The great majority are grown in the western Canadian provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Thus, Canadian farmers have a great deal of experience in growing HT canola, and that’s what Mauro and McLachlan decided to focus on.

Students in fight against phone mast

Published Date: 24 April 2008

STUDENTS at Newmarket College have started their own fight against a controversial mobile phone mast put up near the school.

Head boy Tristan Pithers launched a petition on Monday in protest at the 30ft mast, which went up in Exning Road in February following a council blunder.

More than 100 pupils and staff have already signed the petition, which will eventually be sent to Forest Heath Council and mast operator 02 urging them to take it down.

What the Family Would Let You See, the Pentagon Obstructs

Dana Milbank, of The Washington Post, reports: "Lt. Col. Billy Hall, one of the most senior officers to be killed in the Iraq war, was laid to rest yesterday at Arlington National Cemetery. It's hard to escape the conclusion that the Pentagon doesn't want you to know that. The family of 38-year-old Hall, who leaves behind two young daughters and two stepsons, gave their permission for the media to cover his Arlington burial -- a decision many grieving families make so that the nation will learn about their loved ones' sacrifice. But the military had other ideas, and they arranged the Marine's burial yesterday so that no sound, and few images, would make it into the public domain."

‘Our’ government has still not told ‘we the people’ the real reasons ‘our’ government invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. Instead, the American sheeple have accepted a succession of transparent lies: weapons of mass destruction, al Qaeda connections and complicity in the 9/11 attack, overthrowing a dictator and ‘bringing democracy’ to Iraqis. The great moral American people would rather believe government lies than to acknowledge the government’s crimes and to hold the government accountable...

The Erosion of Employer-Provided Health Care

Though a majority of workers and their families are still covered through employers, a variety of factors, most prominently increased costs, have led to a steady slide in coverage."

Seven Myths of Energy Independence

According to Paul Roberts in Mother Jones, "Thoughtful observers have been trying to debunk energy independence since Nixon's time. And yet the dream refuses to die, in no small part because it offers political cover for a whole range of controversial initiatives.... Meet John "Dubya" McCain

According to J. Peter Scoblic in The Los Angeles Times, "John McCain knows a lot less about foreign policy than he'd have us believe. This, anyway, is the impression that's been growing in recent weeks, not least because of a much-discussed New York Times story published recently that painted a growing divide in his campaign between 'pragmatists' and 'neoconservatives.'

This is the most dangerous period in more than 40 years: Navy Adm

Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the threats of extremism and changes happening around the world associated with energy and resources make the present day "the most uncertain and potentially the most dangerous time since I've been serving".

US 'war on terror' backfiring, says thinktank

The US "war on terror" has backfired, strengthening extremists in Afghanistan and Somalia and turning them into legitimate political actors in the eyes of their local populations, a thinktank said today.

Iranian Role in Training Militants Questioned

U.S. military commanders in Iraq say Shiite militants, believed to be linked to Muqtada al Sadr's Mahdi Army, have received training and equipment from Iranian military commandos. The militants are believed to be behind the recent upsurge in well-aimed rocket fire on the U.S.-protected green zone. Others say the threats from these elite Shiite fighters - and the role of Iran - have been exaggerated.

The New Face Of Hunger: UN Cuts School Children's Meals

By Jeremy Lovell in London

A "SILENT tsunami" unleashed by costlier food is threatening 100 million people, the United Nations has warned, revealing that its World Food Program has begun cutting the provision of school meals to some of the world's poorest children as the global food-price crisis worsens.

Food price rises are "mass murder"-UN envoy

Global food price rises are leading to "silent mass murder" and commodities markets have brought "horror" to the world, the United Nations' food envoy told an Austrian newspaper on Sunday.

The new face of hunger

Last year wheat prices rose 77% and rice 16% (see chart 1). These were some of the sharpest rises in food prices ever. But this year the speed of change has accelerated.

Americans hoard food as industry seeks regs

Farmers and food executives appealed fruitlessly to federal officials yesterday for regulatory steps to limit speculative buying that is helping to drive food prices higher. Meanwhile, some Americans are stocking up on staples such as rice, flour and oil in anticipation of high prices and shortages spreading from overseas.

Why Does Bush Want to Rule Iraq?

By Paul Craig Roberts

Bush invaded Iraq with the intent of turning Iraq into an American colony. The so-called government of Maliki is not a government. Maliki is the well paid front man for U.S. colonial rule. Maliki's government does not exist outside the protected Green Zone, the headquarters of the American occupation.

Mast bid fails

Mobile phone company O2 has failed in its attempts to put up a phone mast in Pevensey Bay. Wealden District Council dismissed an appeal by O2 after its original planning application was turned down in August 2007.

Planning inspector Elizabeth Lawrence made a visit to the site on Eastbourne Road and concluded the 12.5 metre mast would 'seriously and unacceptably harm the character and appearance of the area'.

Phone mast victory for residents

By Jill Harding

RESIDENTS of Campbell Road are celebrating after plans to erect a mobile phone mast in front of Leehurst Swan school were rejected by the council.

At a meeting last Thursday, Salisbury City Area Committee threw out the application for a 12-metre phone mast by mobile phone company Orange.

The decision has delighted people living in the area who staged a protest demonstrating against the plans, claiming there would be a health risk to children attending the schools nearby.

When will young Americans get angry about the war?

USA Today
by Peter W. Fulham

04/22/08

Young people are tired of hearing about Iraq, and they gave up getting angry about its steep death toll and mounting costs a long time ago. There is indeed an unsettling absence of anger here in Middletown, Del., at least within the hallways of St. Andrew’s, the small boarding school I attend. Instead of fretting about the war, upperclassmen worry about this year’s record-low acceptance rates at Harvard and whether we’ll get custom T-shirts for the junior prom. Sad as all this is, it’s tough to blame anybody my age for this indifference. Why should we worry when we have no personal stake in the conflict?
