Bundessozialgericht verurteilt Berlin wegen sozialer Politik

15. Dezember 2009

Sonst fallen nächstes Jahr Hunderttausende in Hartz IV.

Jugendarbeitslosigkeit: Nach Ausbildung zunehmend ohne Perspektive

Continued culture of corruption

Freedom Politics
by Gary Galles

12/14/09

In 2006, Republican earmark scandals helped Democrats re-capture control of the House of Representatives. Speaker Nancy Pelosi promised to address the ‘culture of corruption’ by introducing earmark reforms on Congress’ opening day. How have those reforms turned out? Progress is hard to identify, with the House’s just-passed (with no Republican votes) omnibus spending bill including over 5,000 earmarks worth almost $4 billion, and the military spending bill expected to add more than that. And all that is offered as justification are recycled invalid arguments...

Financial 'Reform' Preserves Too Big Banks, Too Much Speculation

The Nation
by John Nichols

12/13/09

The U.S. House has voted for legislation that is described as ‘financial services reform.’ But most of the ‘reforms’ are so mild that the savviest of the nation’s big bankers will be breathing sighs of relief, rather than worrying about being regulated into good behavior. That’s not to say that the House bill is meaningless. It proposes some valuable shifts, including the creation of a Consumer Financial Protection Agency that could — if infused with proper authority and backed by a White House and Congress that want to tip the regulatory balance in favor of the great mass of Americans — give bankers and speculators some headaches. Unfortunately, that’s a vague promise rather than a firm one...

The Fed’s money monopoly

Hawaii Reporter
by US Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)

12/14/09

Last week, in the name of protecting the little guy from Wall Street, the House passed HR 4173 to increase the little guy’s false sense of security in the financial system. This mammoth piece of legislation would massively increase government regulation and oversight in the banking industry under the misguided reasoning that more government could have stopped faulty lending practices, when in actuality it caused them. This bill would also greatly increase the powers of the Federal Reserve, which too many in Congress still see as savior rather than perpetrator in this mess...

[O]ther liberal warheads besides President Obama have won the Nobel Peace Prize, too. Teddy Roosevelt, a Republican Progressive, won the prize but is one of the few American presidents who actually believed that war had positive effects on the human condition. Woodrow Wilson won it but is the man who ruined the entire 20th century by involving America unnecessarily in the First World War (the U.S. had traditionally stayed out of Europe’s wars) and thus inadvertently played a great role in bringing about the conditions for the second, more horrible installment of that conflict and the subsequent Cold War. Finally, Henry Kissinger, the national security adviser and secretary of state to the last liberal president before Obama — Richard Nixon — won the prize even though he and Nixon carpet-bombed the small country of Cambodia, not caring a thing about indiscriminately killing huge numbers of civilians...

As though sending ever more U.S. troops to kill ever more innocent Afghan citizens might have any more tangible effect than to incite the ire of the very people alleged to be quietly conspiring to attack the United States again...

A lesson on nonviolence for Obama

AntiWar.Com
by Eric Stoner

12/19/09

Almost immediately after acknowledging that there is ‘nothing weak — nothing passive — nothing naive — in the creed and lives of Gandhi and King,’ Obama equated nonviolence with doing nothing. To live and act nonviolently, however, never involves standing ‘idle in the face of threats.’ Dorothy Day, Cesar Chavez, Dave Dellinger, Daniel and Philip Berrigan, and countless other genuine peacemakers have put their lives on the line in the struggle for a more just world. Advocates of nonviolence, like Gandhi, simply believe that means and ends are inseparable — that responding in kind to an aggressor will only continue the cycle of violence...

The clarity of false choices

Reason
by Jacob Sullum

12/16/09

‘There are those who claim we have to choose between paying down our deficits … and investing in job creation and economic growth,’ President Obama said last week. ‘This is a false choice.’ During the same speech, he asked his audience to ‘let me just be clear’ that his administration, having racked up the biggest budget deficits ever, is embracing fiscal responsibility, as reflected in his vow that ‘health insurance reform’ will not increase the deficit ‘by one dime.’ For connoisseurs of Obama-speak, the address featured a trifecta, combining three of his favorite rhetorical tropes. There was the vague reference to ‘those who’ question his agenda, the ‘false choice’ they use to deceive the public, and the determination to ‘be clear’ and forthright, in contrast with those dishonest naysayers. These devices are useful as signals that the president is about to mislead us...

Speak no evil

The New Republic
by John B. Judis

12/17/09

The lines most cited in Barack Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize speech were those about evil: ‘Evil does exist in the world. A non-violent movement could not have halted Hitler’s armies. Negotiations cannot convince Al Qaeda’s leaders to lay down their arms. To say that force may sometimes be necessary is not a call to cynicism — it is a recognition of history, the imperfections of man and the limits of reason.’ These lines won approbation from both liberals and conservatives. … While I don’t object to the idea of just war, and have supported the various wars that Obama cited in his speech, and wouldn’t balk at calling Al Qaeda or Hitler evil, I think Obama ventured onto dangerous terrain by invoking the existence of evil as a justification for war. That kind of argument suggests neither moral realism nor prudent idealism, but the crusade-like, messianic foreign policy — pitting good against evil — that got the country into so much trouble during the last administration...

Hoh speaks grim truth to power. His message is that to pursue the Afghan war policy in any guise — including President Obama’s prescription of 30,000 additional, rapidly deployed troops — will be utter folly, trapping America in an unwinnable civil war in the Hindu Kush, and only fueling terrorism...
