Is Obama Tossing Out the Constitution With His New Anti-Terror Plan?

"NOW," PBS: "Closing Guantanamo Bay's prison will do little to close the debate on what we should do with alleged terrorists. 'NOW,' as part of a collaboration with the nonprofit investigative unit ProPublica, investigates the controversial tactic of 'preventative detention,' a government plan that may detain suspects indefinitely without trial or even formal charges."

The next financial crisis

The New Republic
by Peter Boone and Simon Johnson

09/05/09

[T]he Fed may well have mitigated our current crisis by sowing the seeds for the next one. All modern economies need a financial system that can connect people who want to save with those who have good investment projects. This is essentially what banks do. But, unfortunately, this process often goes wrong. And that is precisely what is happening now. Our banks have gotten into the habit of needing to be rescued through repeated bailouts. During this crisis, Bernanke — while saving the financial system in the short term — has done nothing to break this long-term pattern; worse, he exacerbated it. As a result, unless real reform happens soon, we face the prospect of another bubble-bust-bailout cycle that will be even more dangerous than the one we’ve just been through. If you’ve studied U.S. economic history, none of this will come as a surprise...

Anti-Americanism rises in Pakistan over U.S. motives

Pakistanis are reacting to what many here see as an "imperial" American presence, echoing Iraq and Afghanistan, with Washington dictating to the Pakistani military and the government. Polls show that Pakistanis regard the U.S., formally a close ally and the country's biggest donor, as a hostile power.

'A Free People Will Not Permit Torture'

By Ramsey Clark

Fear is the principal element in both public acceptance of torture and individual submission to it. The frightened public is persuaded that only torture can force confessions essential to prevent catastrophic acts-terrorism in the present context. The frightened victim is persuaded torture will be unbearable, or be his death.

Afghanistan by the Numbers

Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch.com: "Here may be the single strangest fact of our American world: that at least three administrations - Ronald Reagan's, George W. Bush's, and now Barack Obama's - drew the US 'defense' perimeter at the Hindu Kush; that is, in the rugged, mountainous lands of Afghanistan. Put another way, while Americans argue feverishly and angrily over what kind of money, if any, to put into health care, or decaying infrastructure, or other key places of need, until recently just about no one in the mainstream raised a peep about the fact that, for nearly eight years (not to say much of the last three decades), we've been pouring billions of dollars, American military know-how, and American lives into a black hole in Afghanistan that is, at least in significant part, of our own creation."

Men With Guns in Kabul and Washington

Norman Solomon, Truthout: "For those who believe in making war, Kabul is a notable work product. After 30 years, the results are in: a devastated city. A stale witticism calls Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai 'the mayor of Kabul.' Now, not even. On block after block in the Afghan capital, AK-47s are conspicuous in the hands of men on guard against a near future. Widely seen as corrupt, inept and - with massive election fraud - now illegitimate, Karzai's government is losing its grip along with its credibility."
