Iraq Report: "A Giant Step Sideways"

Despite the mainstream media's sound and fury, many analysts say the Iraq Study Group report has little to do with leaving Iraq any time soon. Instead, they fear the report's diligent research and assiduous recommendations serve to obfuscate the depth of the US-created crisis, change the nature of the occupation, pave the way for multinational privatization of Iraq's resources, and distract from increasingly stentorian calls for immediate withdrawal.

A Peace Prize for Iraq: The Economist's Solution to the War

Dean Baker writes: "The events of the last week should have dashed any hopes that the Iraq Study Group's plan would lead to a quick US withdrawal from Iraq and an end to the violence. President Bush has made it clear that he will not accept the ISG plan for a phased withdrawal of troops. Even if he did accept the ISG plan, it is not clear how much longer US troops would remain in Iraq, nor that the plan would lead to an end to the civil war.

Irak-Krieg: Annan übt scharfe Kritik an Bush-Regierung

12.12.06

Bundesregierung will EU-Verfassung bis 2009 durchsetzen

12.12.06

Government spying goes global

AlterNet
by Maureen Webb

12/12/06

The story which broke last week about a traveler risk scoring system called the Automated Targeting System, or "ATS," evokes an image of an Orwellian world in which the State compiles a secret dossier on every individual and sorts the population according to secret criteria, assigning each person a "risk score." The individual has no recourse to challenge his risk rating, and he has no way of correcting any false or incomplete information about him. In fact, he will never know what information is being used against him, or even the criteria on which he has been judged a risk to the State. It is a disturbing image, and the fact that the government has been conducting the ATS program in secret for four years has shocked many people. However, the ATS is hardly a surprise to those who have been keeping track of similar programs...

More cheer for the holiday travel season

Independent Institute
by Ivan Eland

12/11/06

This holiday travel season, Santa Claus is not the only one who is checking to see whether you've been naughty or nice. For the last four years, the U.S. government has been snooping by computer into people's travel records and assigning them a risk score for being terrorists or criminals. Of all the government's violations of civil liberties since 9/11, the Department of Homeland Security's Automated Targeting System (ATS) is probably one of the worst in terms of numbers of people affected...

No Force, No Fraud
by Bob Smith

12/12/06

When I started No Force, I decided that there were already enough people writing and reporting on the War in Iraq, and I didn't want the war to obliterate attention to other relevant issues. An update is, however, appropriate in looking back. As of today, 2,931 Americans have lost their lives in Iraq, another 21,778 are wounded, and the conflict is still escalating. The latest surveys now show that less than 30% of Americans approve of the way Bush is handling the war. Nearly 2/3 of us do not think Iraq will end up with a stable, democratic government, and only 9% think we will exit with a clear-cut victory...

Presidential Tyranny Untamed by Election Defeat

Chris Floyd begins, "Like the two entwining strands of the double helix, law and power form the genetic structure of government. Law is nothing but empty verbiage without power to back it up, enforce it, embody it. And power without law is nothing but a mad ape, baring its teeth, thumping its chest, raping and beating where it pleases, taking what it wants: a bestial thing, born in the muddy swamp of our lowest, blindest, rawest biochemical impulses. Disconnect these strands and things fall apart, as Yeats says; the center literally cannot hold, and the blood-dimmed tide is loosed upon the world."

Bush No Friend of Labor

"While President Bush points to low unemployment and a resurgent stock market as signs of a strong economy, most Americans don't feel so bullish," say Dmitri Iglitzin and Steven Hill. "Median incomes are flat, healthcare costs are soaring, pensions are being de-funded and corporate employers are threatening to shred the social contract with their employees that has prevailed for 60 years. The balance of economic power has become increasingly one-sided, and one reason is that a key institution — the National Labor Relations Board, the country's chief arbiter of labor disputes — remains solidly in anti-worker hands."

Climate Scientist Says "Kyoto" Barred

A federal climate scientist in Boulder says his boss told him never to utter the word Kyoto and tried to bar him from using the phrase climate change at a conference. Iraqi Exodus Could Test Bush Policy

Hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have fled their homeland are likely to seek refugee status in the United States, putting intense pressure on the Bush administration to re-examine a policy that authorizes only 500 Iraqis to be resettled here next year. The official US policy has been that the refugee situation is temporary and that most of the estimated 1.5 million who have fled to Jordan, Syria, and elsewhere will eventually return to Iraq. But US and international officials now acknowledge that the instability in Iraq has made it too dangerous for many refugees, especially Iraqi Christians, to return any time soon.

650,000 Iraqi dead given voice in Congress

The briefing was to discuss the October 2006 study Mortality after the 2003 invasion of Iraq: a cross-sectional cluster sample survey, which appeared in the British medical journal The Lancet. This study estimated that 655,000 more Iraqis had died (”excess deaths”) since the invasion than would have died if the prewar rate of death (mortality) had continued. It further estimated that about 600,000 of these had died from violence.

What We Leave Behind

"Indiscriminate weaponry like cluster bombs hides who is responsible and removes culpability," writes Frida Berrigan. "Without responsibility, how can there be law? The big bomb releases the little bombs, which might kill a soldier tomorrow, a farmer next month, or a child a year from now. Cluster bombing is different from strafing a village, massacring a family or executing a suspected militant. Hands and consciences remain clean while bodies are shredded and pulped. There is no My Lai massacre or No Gun Ri atrocity with cluster weapons. Rather, a permanent state of terror is created where all human activity is dangerous and costly."
