Spinning Old Threats Into New Fears

"Investigators have known for a decade about terrorist plots to bring down passenger jets with liquid explosives. So why, all of a sudden," Robert Scheer asks, "did Bush ban most liquids on flights? Government-induced hysteria thrives on public ignorance, which is why President Bush is so confident of turning the British bomb plot to his partisan purposes.

Snake eyes

New Yorker
by Hendrik Hertzberg

08/16/06

It is in the nature of gambling that the gambler may lose. The dice have now been well and truly rolled, and they have come up snake eyes. The war's sole real gain -- the overthrow of the murderous Saddam Hussein regime -- is mocked by the chaos and suffering that have overwhelmed millions of Iraqis, whose country is again a republic of fear. The concrete losses are horrific: nearly three thousand American and 'coalition' troops killed; thousands more maimed; scores of thousands of Iraqi civilians dead; a third of a trillion dollars burned through. So are the less tangible ones: the unprecedented levels of anti-Americanism throughout the Muslim world and Europe; the self-inflicted loss of America's moral prestige; the neglect of real nuclear dangers, in Iran and North Korea, while chimeras were chased in Iraq. The neoconservative project of a friendly, democratic Middle East, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace, is worse than a charred ruin -- it is a flaming inferno...

Comment on my blog on Lt. Ehren Watada -- his position clarified

This may need clarification: Lt. Ehren Watada is IN NO SENSE A "CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTOR". That is a valid position to have; but it is NOT the position of Lt. Watada, and has NOTHING to do with the stance he has taken. Lt. Watada, unlike a Conscientious Objector, has NOT taken a religious or philosophical stance against War in general. At least, not in this instance. HE IS, RATHER, REFUSING AS AN OFFICER AND AS A SOLDIER, TO OBEY ILLEGAL ORDERS -- which is the DUTY of EVERY SINGLE OFFICER AND SOLDIER. HE IS NOT MAKING AN EXCEPTION OF HIMSELF OR ASKING FOR SPECIAL TREATMENT BECAUSE OF HIS "PHILOSOPHY". Rather, Lt. Watada is REFUSING TO LEAD MEN IN BATTLE OR INTO HARM'S WAY, AS AN OFFICER IN A COMMAND POSITION, because THE ORDERS ARE ILLEGAL; THE WAR IS ILLEGAL. If the war were a "just war" such as WWII is regarded to be, then Lt. Watada might have no problem with it.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO MAKE THIS DISTINCTION. Lt. Watada's case APPLIES TO EVERY SINGLE SOLDIER, no matter their philosophy, religion, or personal beliefs of any kind. AN ILLEGAL ORDER IS ALWAYS AND FOREVER AN ILLEGAL ORDER, no matter what your beliefs or feelings. ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL for EVERYONE. Lt. Watada is HOLDING HIMSELF ACCOUNTABLE -- as should we ALL.

Gene-Altered Crops Denounced

Environmental Groups Seek Moratorium on Open-Air Tests

By Rick Weiss
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 16, 2006; A03

Environmental groups yesterday called for a moratorium on open-air tests of crops genetically engineered to produce medicines and vaccines, citing a federal court's conclusion last week that the Agriculture Department repeatedly broke the law by allowing companies to plant such crops on hundred of acres in Hawaii.

In a toughly worded 52-page decision released without fanfare late last week, a U.S. District judge in Hawaii concluded that USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), which grants permits for the planting of genetically engineered crops, should have first investigated whether the plants posed a threat to any of that state's hundreds of endangered species.

The corn and sugar cane plants, already harvested because the experiments involving them were completed before the case was decided, had been modified to produce human hormones, drugs and ingredients for vaccines against AIDS and hepatitis B.

"APHIS's utter disregard for this simple investigation requirement, especially given the extraordinary number of endangered and threatened plants and animals in Hawaii, constitutes an unequivocal violation of a clear congressional mandate," wrote Judge J. Michael Seabright in his Aug. 10 decision.

The ruling is the first by a federal court on the controversial practice of "bio-pharming," in which crops are engineered to produce potentially therapeutic human proteins. But it is not the first damning federal critique of APHIS's oversight. A December 2005 audit by the Agriculture Department's Office of Inspector General found multiple failings in the agency's enforcement of research rules for gene-altered plants.

APHIS spokeswoman Rachel Iadicicco said yesterday that the agency had already corrected the major problems cited in the 2005 report and had recently made policy changes to satisfy the court's concerns, as well. In addition, she said, APHIS is crafting a sweeping "programmatic" environmental impact statement addressing larger, long-standing concerns about its oversight of biotech crops.

But opponents said they have heard such assurances before.

"We are asking the judge to enjoin the issuance of any biopharma permits anywhere in the country unless and until APHIS completes a programmatic analysis of their regulatory program," said Paul H. Achitoff, managing attorney for Earthjustice in Honolulu, which litigated the case with the Washington-based Center for Food Safety.

The judge has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday to decide what remedies to impose.

The court ruling is the latest in a decade-long struggle that has pitted biotech companies against an uneasy coalition of environmentalists and conventional food producers and distributors.

Advocates believe that some drugs and vaccines may be produced more economically in crops than in the laboratory cultures that are commonly used today. Some even envision "edible vaccines," such as bananas laden with proteins that would boost blood levels of protective antibodies -- an attractive strategy for developing countries, where the refrigeration needed for many conventional vaccines is often not available.

But opponents fear that ordinary crops may become contaminated with drug-spiked versions grown in open fields, and that unwanted drug exposures from foods could trigger allergic reactions or other problems in people or animals.

Fears of admixture gained credence in 2002 when a Texas company was found to have broken rules in its cultivation of corn plants engineered to make a pig diarrhea vaccine. The error necessitated the destruction of 500,000 bushels of potentially contaminated soybeans, and left the now defunct company, ProdiGene, stuck with millions of dollars in cleanup costs.

"The use of food crops to produce materials not intended to be in the food supply must only proceed under systems proven to prevent any contamination or adulteration of the food supply," said Jeffrey Barach of the Food Products Association in Washington. "To date, effective control programs have not been demonstrated to our satisfaction."

The federal court decision responds to a 2003 lawsuit filed by several public interest groups. Taking a novel tack, the groups charged that APHIS failed to consider the potential impacts on endangered species when it approved four Hawaii field studies in the previous three years. The plants were produced by ProdiGene, Monsanto, the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center and Garst Seed of Slater, Iowa.

The plaintiffs -- including Friends of the Earth, Pesticide Action Network North America and Kahea, a Hawaiian environmental alliance -- noted that Hawaii is home to 329 endangered or threatened species, more than any other state, including many birds with easy access to test plots.

Seabright agreed with the groups that, although proof of harm is lacking, APHIS's issuance of the permits for 800 acres on four Hawaiian islands without consideration of those potential impacts was "arbitrary and capricious."

"This is probably the strongest message yet to USDA that they need to do a much better job at regulating all genetically engineered crop field trials," said Bill Freese of the Center for Food Safety, noting that about a dozen pharma permits are approved in a typical year. "They've been rubber-stamping for too long, and they need to get serious about these crops."

But the judge rejected the groups' broader claim that APHIS had broken its promise to improve its overall system of oversight.

"Although the Plaintiffs are understandably upset by the fact that this process has taken over three years, the court accepts APHIS's representations" that the delay is justified and progress is under way.

Stephanie A. Whalen, president of the Hawaii Agriculture Research Center, which ran the studies involving sugar cane engineered to make a human blood protein, said the ruling "looks backward" at problems already corrected.

"The idea that this has got the potential for harm has been all blown out of proportion," she said. "We're really proud of the work we do, and we know how important it is to safeguard the environment."

Mast campaigners want mass march

By Robert Fisk

The anti-mast campaigners have been protesting since February BR3768

ANTI-MAST campaigners are mobilising to march on Downing Street.

The protestors have been fighting with T-Mobile over the mast site at the corner of St Paul's Wood Hill and Beddington Road, St Paul's Cray, since February.

They have also got a petition together against Orange's plans to put a mast up in the same area.

The group now wants to link up with anti-mast campaigners from across the country for a mass protest in central London which will include a visit to 10 Downing Street.

One of the protestors, mother-of-three Sam Anderson, is in talks with the Met Police about a potential route for the march, which she hopes will take place by the end of September.

She is also in contact with Mast Sanity, an organisation which has links with other protest groups across the country, to try to get the highest number of people possible involved.

The 35-year-old said: "I'm doing it because I care. A lot of masts are disguised to look like trees so there is not even a warning there is one there.

"In our opinion it has escalated out of control and it needs to be addressed.

"It is happening all over the country.

"We want people to volunteer in their own organisations and groups and do massive leaflet drops."

Mrs Anderson, of Thorndon Close, St Paul's Cray, added: "We want to get it en masse and we want to get letters going to MPs.

"If more and more people bombard their MPs by sending them letters they will have to start to listen.

"They should not put masts up near homes or schools until there is more scientific evidence. We want to get this sorted as soon as possible.

"If everyone pulls together it could be massive."

Call Mrs Anderson on 020 8302 4043 to get involved with the campaign.

TOWN CENTRE PHONE MAST PLAN

THE possibility of a new mobile phone mast being erected on the Caledonian Hotel in Leven was due to be debated on Tuesday.

Councillors have been advised to grant planning permission to Orange for the installation of three antennae and a satellite dish, despite strong local objection.

Residents of nearby Forth Street are concerned at the site's proximity to houses and a local nursery school.

One objector pointed out: "The health risks associated with exposure to mobile phone technology are well documented and continue to be monitored."

Another stated: "It is not a suitable development in a mixed residential/business area."

However, local planning chiefs believe the application is an appropriate one and have recommended it for approval, subject to some minor conditions.

They don't consider health concerns to be "material in assessment of this application" and stressed the mast would have no affect on Leven's appearance.

The decision was due to be taken at Tuesday's meeting of Fife Council's central area development committee in Kirkcaldy.

Police called to calm anti-mast protest

Police were called in after the protest turned angry

POLICE are currently at the scene of an anti-mast protest which is threatening to turn nasty.

Officers have been called in after protesters attempted to tear down barricades at the site of the controversial building work.

Speaking from the scene, News Shopper reporter Robert Fisk says about 15 campaigners are claiming mobile phone giant T-Mobile has broken its word.

They say a meeting was due to be held tonight between them, T-Mobile and police before any work began.

He said: "The mood here has changed and the protestors are very angry, saying work was only suppose to start after tonight's meeting."

Workmen have erected the barricades around themselves to stop the protestors getting anywhere near the work.

St Paul Cray residents have fought a six-month battle to stop mobile phone giant T-Mobile erecting the mast on the corner of St Paul's Wood Hill and Bedington Road.

This morning, workmen arrived at the scene to attempt to erect the mast for a third time.

Campaigners, who say they are worried about the health effects of the mast, gathered and were being kept away from the workmen by barricades.

Last month, an attempt to erect the mast turned nasty when campaigners argued with security guards brought in to keep them away.

"Everything old becomes new again. "A Clean Break" was written ten years ago to advocate for an Israeli attack on Lebanon, and by proxy Syria and Iran. It was cast aside then, but appears to have been revived for this current disaster. The lessons Israel is learning in Lebanon have been vividly available in Iraq these last years, as the basis for that invasion was essentially premised upon a slightly edited version of the same paper. Those lessons have not achieved purchase with the neo-conservatives, and "A Clean Break" may come again to serve as the basis for an attack on Iran. There is little hope that such an attack will meet with any more success than the last two conflicts inspired by this dangerous document and the men who wrote it...

The aggressions are unfounded as defensive measures and are accordingly resulting in great anger against America and within America. Alzheimers: Prevention doesn't require a billion dollars

THE FORWARDED PORTION OF THIS EMAIL WAS ADDRESSED TO MEDIA FOR THE ALZHEIMERS ASSOCIATION (U.S.).

I previously located information that our National Institute of Health has set a very high priority on research involving protein folding problems (heat shock protein also known as "environmental stress protein"). I was "very excited" thinking, finally, the issue re amyloid formation will be taken very seriously.

WRONG!!! What is being taken seriously is the work that is being put into developing new drugs to "supposedly treat" Alzheimers and other diseases (many including Type II Diabetes, M.S., and even some Leukemias) that involve the formation of amyloid.

In other words, what I mistakenly believed might open-the-door to "prudent avoidance" is just a major effort to "keep-the-lid-on" the "whys and wherefores" of amyloid formation so that BIG PHARMA can make lots of money and continue paying off charities and organizations that purport to want to help people!!!!

Take care everyone and "keep on fighting for the innocent victims" as best you/we can in spite of all the greed!!! Joanne

Hellooo!!! Is anyone out there? Is anyone listening?

All we see is the need for more MONEY.....more STUDIES....more DRUGS!!! http://www.alz.org/News/06Q3/081506.asp

Does anyone CARE that epidemiological studies were done many years ago that linked Alzheimers to nuns who frequently used sewing machines? That epidemiological studies were done years ago that linked industrial sewing machine workers to Alzheimers? And more........

Does anyone CARE that in 1994, The American Cancer Society used to send out an article from "USA Today" recommending persons MOVE electric appliances away from the heads of beds?

Does anyone CARE that the electrical utilities' communications' experts prepared a publication in 2001 that states "....you may want to replace your electric clock with a battery-operated or wind-up clock?

Does anyone CARE that my husband's profound and unusual memory loss which was later diagnosed as Alzeimers IMPROVED -- his neuropsych test -- after we moved his electric clock?

Does anyone CARE that the 1999 EMF Interagency Committee Report has never been presented to Congress that classifies low level EMF's (electromagnetic fields) as Class 2B carcinogens?

Does anyone CARE that the 2002 California EMF Report links EMF's as low as 4.0 milligauss to brain cancer, Leukemia, Lou Gehrig's Disease and miscarriage?

WHEN will the Alzheimers Association inform the public that amyloid forms as result of chronic, prolonged exposure to low levels of EMF/EMR so our country and countries around-the-world will begin to once again inform their citizens of the need to practice "prudent avoidance?"

Two of our grandsons suffered rare immune deficiencies from sleeping close to electric meters (mounted on bedroom walls)!!! They GOT WELL after their beds were moved!!! We were told they may develop Leukemia. Their immune deficiency was RARE because these two toddlers' (cousins in different homes) cells were AGING!!!"

My guinea pig studies after exposing to "powerwall" in my home yielded pre-Leukemic blood changes including "hypersegmented neutrophils" (slowed DNA synthesis) which are "markers for irradiation!!!" One out of each set of two died within 30 days of exposure to the electric meter. One died several years later due to REACTIVE Renal AMYLOIDOSIS!!! This is a TSE-like problem -- the "mad cow family of diseases!"

Deliberate "non-action" by the World Health Organization (WHO) re withholding of "prudent avoidance information" to the public is not helping. Dr. Michael Repacholi -- former head of WHO's Radiation Section is a paid-off representative with funds coming from industry that chooses to let people get sick and die rather than inform the public about simple, precautionary measures such as moving electric items from bedrooms, turning off circuits to bedrooms at night, checking electrical wiring for possible errors, dealing with grounding problems that may eliminate electrical currents on waterpipes and more.

About 51% of all health problems all the way from poor sleep to cancer might be greatly reduced if organizations such as yours begin to pay attention to what I call "an avoidable healthcare crisis!!!"

The public more than realizes that drugs are not the answer -- that most drugs cause as many problems as they purport to help. Imagine the funding that could come to the Alzheimers' Association IF announcements are made to affected persons and their caregivers that may actually help! Even for those most severely afflicted who reside in nursing home facilities might sleep better and have less delusions and hallucinations if information regarding Melatonin is provided. Melatonin is greatly reduced by chronic, prolonged EMF/EMR exposure also.

Isn't it time to let the public in on this well-kept secret? Thanks and take care - Joanne

Corporate war machine gathers speed

By Ismael Hossein-zadeh

There is strong evidence that as the Bush administration is mulling over plans to bomb Iran, the simmering conflict between high-ranking military professionals and militaristic civilian leaders is bursting into the open.

Either you take down Iran, Mr. Bush, or you are a failed president

Bush is on notice from the neocons and War Party that have all but destroyed his presidency: Either you take down Iran, Mr. Bush, or you are a failed president. If the president is still listening to these people, Lord help the republic.

Group campaigns against masts

FOLLOWING an article in this newspaper last month regarding opposition to a mast at Coolock Garda Station, members of a campaign group have spoken out on the contentious issue. The Irish Electromagnetic Radiation Victims' Network (IERVN) campaigns on behalf of those who say they are affected by harmful emissions from masts.

The group's aim is to help “victims” and create public awareness of the issue.

Raheny resident, Con Colbert, a dedicated member of IERVN for a number of years, said that everyone in the group has “suffered ill health due to the presence of masts”.

“They have experienced a wide range of symptoms - burning in the skin, poor sleep quality, stress and a depletion of energy,” he said.

Mr Colbert became involved as a result of his own personal experience. He lives in close proximity to three masts in Raheny, including one at the local Garda station.

He said he tends to notice when “levels of radiation are high”.

“It is not too bad here at the present time,” he said. “But when I go into the village in Raheny, I feel uncomfortable and experience some disorientation and sudden fatigue.”

Mr Colbert said he has spoken to doctors but they are unable to form a diagnosis.

“Sensitivity to radiation is something that will not show up in a medical test,” Mr Colbert stated. “There are biological effects and they have been well documented by a group of scientists in Europe who have carried out extensive research in the area.”

Fellow IERVN member, Helen McCrory, from Clontarf, said she had to move out of her city centre apartment when a phone mast was erected outside her home.

“I can suffer to varying degrees, depending on the level of radiation,” she said.

“Different frequencies affect me in different ways, causing loss of voice and pain in my arms and shoulders,” she said.

She believes that masts are extremely dangerous and cause a great deal of distress for those who are susceptible to their effects.

Fellow campaigner, Enda Dalton, from Raheny, noticed that he suddenly became ill, couldn't sleep and didn't have any energy when he came into close contact with masts.

He said he received numerous letters and phone calls from people who had similar ailments. He lives about 200 yards from the nearest mast and 250 yards from the next one and has built a screened room in his house, which allows him to benefit from a “radioactive-free environment”.

Mr Dalton feels that there is a general lack of commitment to tackling the problem.

“Groups are campaigning, but there has been no real outcome,” he said.
A spokesman for the Office of Public Works (OPW) said the mast at Raheny Garda Station meets and complies with all health and safety regulations.
“Under the terms of our licence agreements, mobile phone operators are required to install and operate all equipment in accordance with all relevant legislation, health and safety, and planning,” he said.

“They must also operate within current standards and EU regulations and adhere to guidelines on exposure limits to emissions, issued by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP).”
The OPW spokesman said he doesn't believe the presence of a number of masts in the same area represents a health hazard.

“In our opinion, the greater number of masts allows for less emissions and strength,” he said.

The spokesman added that progress is being made on the issue.

“I understand that a joint Oireachtas Committee has been set up and an inter-departmental group formed, under the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources, who will be reporting to this committee shortly,” he said.

Officials Cut Corners With Biotech Crop Permits in Hawaii

Citing possible harm to Hawaii's 329 endangered and threatened species, a federal district judge has ruled that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) violated the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in permitting the cultivation of drug-producing, genetically engineered crops throughout Hawaii.

Beyond Propaganda

John Kenney helped to design BP's "beyond petroleum" ad campaign and believed for awhile that this oil company was different: "I guess, looking at it now, 'beyond petroleum' is just advertising. It's become mere marketing - perhaps it always was - instead of a genuine attempt to engage the public in the debate or a corporate rallying cry to change the paradigm."

Lt. Watada's Mother: My Son Needs Your Support

Carolyn Ho, mother of conscientious objector Lt. Ehren Watada, asks for support during her son's pre-trial hearing on Aug 17 and 18. "Whether or not he is permitted to submit evidence supporting his refusal to deploy and his first amendment rights remains to be seen," she says. "Nevertheless, the military must know that the world is watching and that justice must be served."
