Right Livelihood Award 2006: Magda Havas and Olle Johansson to be nominated

Back in 2003 I was approached by someone else –also a long term anti-EMF campaigner, making me aware of the Right Livelihood Awards (RLHA), having then in mind Olle Johansson to be nominated. When finding out that at that time the deadline for nomination just passed (April 10 every year) this topic died for a while until just recently last December, when RLHA was brought up again. So far we very few came to the agreement to also have Magda nominated besides Olle, and my info request with the RLHA Association was responded that Awards might be shared, as happened last year (Maude Barlow & Tony Clarke).

We have known Olle Johansson since the start of our EMF involvement (about 1996). Olle has been working tiredless and always expressing the full truth without siding an quarter of an inch with the industry but supporting his concern about the health and well being of us humans, if not animals and plants as welI. His research is not quite easy, because of the problem that lately his work is kind of “censored” and he has a hard time to get sufficient research funding, which…as we know… most of the time are directly/indirectly coming from the industry.

Magda as well deserved this livelihood, since we/I have known her first over the EMF-L list thanks to guru’s subscription side. I never expected, hence I was very surprised, when Magda agreed to come to West Canada to testify on our behalf in the SumasEnergy2/Abbotssford 230kV line upon my request via e-mail….and this with very short notice and all at her cost, since the National Energy Board did/usually does not provide participation cost compensation. In our recent Osoyoos TL application –again despite the very short notice- she made herself available again,…and as we all know, shortly before our hearing here in Osoyoos, Magda testified in a Vancouver 230 kV TL application case. We all know Magda too well, and there is no need to explain any further why she should be nominated!

A problem will arise, and I am sure some individuals of our EMF campaign community around the globe might feel left out or discriminated by the Magda & Olle nomination, which is true….. we have many who worked on this issue tiredless and on a volunteer basis. But that will mean a list of many to be included as well…however, I am sure all of us will agree that in case Magda and Olle would get the Award, that would mean a recognition for all of us! I myself would just be very very happy in case Magda and Olle jointly would win the award!

I kindly ask you maybe get familiar with the nomination process and share some input, please go to the home site

http://www.rightlivelihood.org/index.htm

and then to the nomination site: http://www.rightlivelihood.org/nominate.htm

and I kindly would like some feedback from you all.

So far I feel a more qualified individual (from one of our EMF citizen group) should submit both nominations.

Magda and Olle have agreed to accept being nominated, once we have progressed with our work, we can then also ASAP inform Magda and Olle what they have to submit from their site, as this is required according to the nomination rules.

I am sorry, I could not approach you a bit earlier with this issue, I was so much occupied in our nearby TL CPCN application/hearing, the written argument stage now approaching.

Please don’t delay your response too long, April 10th is deadline.

Also: please share with others I have not yet included in this list in my hurry.

Thanks,

Cheers and Best,

Hans Karow.

I received a letter in the post today from the Right Livelihood Award Foundation today saying unfortunately we cannot nominate Olle Johansson for the award as you are not allowed to re-nominate a candidate until after three years of the first nomination, Olle was put up for the award in 2004 ‘he should have won then’ which means he can’t be put up again until 2007.

However you may nominate Magda Havas for this year or any one else you think worthwhile and I know there are many people who should receive this award. This is an opportunity to get the emf issue firmly recognised and the work of some of our most brilliant forward thinking and open minded scientists recognised.

REMOVE MAST OR WE'LL CHOP IT DOWN

http://tinyurl.com/ldma2

10:30 - 25 March 2006

Villagers in Beckford took to the streets armed with chainsaws and axes after a telegraph pole appeared on their village green.

Bt didn't need planning permission to put the 23ft pole slap bang in the middle of the green. But it didn't bank on the fury of the residents. The pole appeared on Tuesday, ruining views of the ninth century church and dwarfing an oak planted in 1990 to mark the Queen Mother's 90th birthday.

Villagers started a petition and kicked up such a fuss that by Thursday, BT caved in and removed the mast.

Sally Stringer, who runs Beckford Stores, said residents would be keeping a close eye on the situation.

She said workmen told her the pole had been put in the wrong place and that it would have to go elsewhere.

"We got 36 names on a petition in half a day before they came and took the pole away," she said.

"I understand cables have to be replaced but they can put them underground. This area is so special.

"It's a beautiful village green. What they did was a legalised form of vandalism. The village was spitting about it.

"It spoiled an outstanding view of the church. It was totally out of order."

BT did not need planning permission for the pole because the village green is common land.

County councillor Adrian Hardman (Con, Bredon) said: "It's one of the prettiest views around Bredon Hill.

"The tree was completely dwarfed by the giant pole. It was quite extraordinary."

BT spokeswoman Anna Steven said: "The installation of a new pole was necessary to raise overhead cable.

"BT has statutory powers to site equipment on public land but we always consider a range of factors such as best possible position in terms of the service to be provided, visual amenity and local circumstances.

"On occasions the balance between cost effectiveness, aesthetics and safety can be difficult to achieve.

"In this case, given local objections, the pole has been removed in the interim while we seek an alternative solution."

"It spoiled an outstanding view of the church. It was totally out of order."

Handymasten lassen viele kränkeln

25.03.2006 22:56

Lakehead University forbids wireless networks on campus

Technology in Government, March/April 2006, Vol. 13, No. 2

3/24/2006 5:00:00 PM
by Kathleen Sibley

There are many benefits to studying at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ont. Ubiquitous wireless Internet access, however, isn't one of them. That's because president Fred Gilbert won't allow it until he's satisfied EMF (electric and magnetic fields) exposure doesn't pose a health risk, particularly to young people.

Gilbert says he based his decision on scientific literature that indicates the potential for “some fairly significant” health consequences.

“These are particularly relevant in younger people (who have) fast-growing tissues, and most of our student body are late teenagers and still growing, so it’s just a matter of taking precautions and providing an environment that doesn’t have a potential risk associated risk,” he said.

Gilbert cited studies done by scientists for the California Public Utilities Commission, whose findings boil down to the fact that while there is no proven link between EMFs exposure and diseases such as leukemia and brain tumours, the possible risk warrants further investigation. He also said Canadian regulation allows for a higher minimum degree of exposure to EMFs than do some other countries.

“All I’m saying is while the jury’s out on this one, I’m not going to put in place what is potential chronic exposure for our students,” he said. Gilbert added he believes there are many environmental impacts that are not manifest for 30 to 40 years after exposure. “Second-hand tobacco exposure is a case in point,” he said. “We’re just finding out now what some of those impacts are. Asbestos is another example.”

Lakehead has some wireless access, but only where the university’s fibre optic network doesn’t reach. There are plenty of computers around campus where students can access the Internet 24 hours a day, so it’s not like they’re cut off, Gilbert said.

Phone-mast rules are 'a disgrace'

[March 25, 2006]

(Leicester Mercury Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)

A city MP has urged the Government to reconsider its rules on mobile phone masts.

Leicester South Labour MP Sir Peter Soulsby spoke out after a Government inspector backed phone firm O2's bid to put six antennae on Elizabeth House, in Leicester, which already has 16.

The city council refused planning permission last summer, due to concerns about a cumulative health risk for residents.

O2 won permission on appeal after the inspector ruled that "the planning system is not the place for determining health safeguards".

Sir Peter said: "It's an absolute disgrace - I bet the inspector doesn't have to live with a jumble of electrical equipment over his flat.

"I think there's a case for a dramatic change in the law, to switch the balance of power away from the phone companies and towards local councils." He said that, although they were essential, masts could sited be away from residential buildings.

New York City may restrict cell phone towers placement due to health worries

An anyonymous source sent this to me earlier today.

I think we should pass it on.

James River Martin

The story was originally published in the Park Slope Courier, of Brooklyn, N.Y.

It was an important bit of news, but with no legs to carry it through "official channels" to the larger world. The story basically got nailed down to Brooklyn, its feet taken from it. The powers that be, it would seem, don't like stories of this kind getting legs.

The headline: "Critics Fight to Restrict Cell Towers". The upshot: New York City may restrict cell phone towers placement due to health worries..., that's all. No big deal, right? Not news with legs.

".... The bill would prohibit the erection of cellular towers and antennas within 500 feet of schools throughout New York City. ..." Schools! Children!

A foot in the door. That's all.

Critics Fight to Restrict Cell Towers http://www.parkslopecourier.com/site/index.cfm?newsid=16324536&brd=2384&pag=461&dept_id=552853

A couple of blogs picked it up.

http://www.emfacts.com/weblog/?p=414
http://wireless-action.blogspot.com/2006/03/news-from-new-york-city.html

But Google and Yahoo news searches including its various terms pulled up essentially nothing. It is not news with legs. Officially.

One wonders about the..., what? millions or is it billions (?) in advertising which cascades into the advertising departments of the media. Those same ad departments which are officially "separated by a firewall" from the news rooms.

Some anonymous writer sends an e-mail to a news underground. (This will happen momentarily.) The story gets e-mailed around. The bloggers pick up the story. This hasn't happened yet. The story needs refinement, editing, a bit of research, some underground investigations and interviews.... The real story is that the story isn't told, but lay in various ways hidden, nailed down in Brooklyn.

It did. Until the people began taking the news into their own hands.

And THAT is a story!

It will be.

Hey thanks - this is now on my blog too!

Cheers,

Japanese Specialist Develops New Electromagnetic Radiation Shielding Material

I am an Electro Hyper Sensitive living in Japan. I have some interesting news for EHS patients.

A landmark EMR shielding material “The Living Polymer-Coated Alminum-Honeycomb Type” was developed by Mr. Teruyuki Tsunabuchi, a Japanese shielding technology specialist and the president of the Tsunabuchi Consultant Office. He has a patent in the U.S.A. (2004) and in Australia (2005), and received a Japanese patent on March 17th, 2006.

This shielding material can cut electromagnetic waves (frequency range 10MHz-100GHz) to less than one ten-millionth while allowing light and air to pass through it. Hence, it can be used as an inner window in houses to protect human beings from the negative effects of electromagnetic radiation coming in from outside. It can also be used as a shielding material added in the manufacture of an appliance's heat ventilation system in order to decrease the leakage of EMFs.

Mr. Teruyuki Tsunabuchi has been successful in developing this new technology, but he hasn't been able to commence with technological mass production as of yet since he hasn't been able to find any sponsors in Japan. Unfortunately, there is little awareness among the Japanese people of the dangers caused by microwave technology (cell phones) and other EMFs. Mr. Teruyuki Tsunabuchi has said that “ If I can get a enough money (JPN Yenn300 million?about US $3.5 million ), the technology for mass production would be developed in one year.”

I believe this material, if it were mass produced, should be able aid many people with EHS.

If you have an interest, please contact to him.

Finally, I would like to introduce an abstract in his paper:

“The Living Polymer Coated Aluminum-Honeycomb Type” Electromagnetic Wave Shielding Material

Abstract We have developed a new electromagnetic shielding material which has honeycomb structure coated by mixture of ultra-high molecular polymer (Living polymer) and Cu micro powder. Each cell of the honeycomb structure has an inclination of other than 90 degrees to the surface. As thus sheet allows the air to pass through and is transport to light, it can be used in layers as one sheet or two with only 1mm/th (-1.8mm/th) thick. This technology can product electromagnetic shielding material which has high shielding effect of 70dB-120dB on frequency range of 10MHz to 100GHz.

Ballygunner mobile mast decision kicked for touch

Friday, March 24, 2006

By Jennifer Long

A DECISION on planning permission for a controversial mobile phone mast on Ballygunner Hurling Club’s grounds has been put back, it’s been confirmed.

Residents of the Ballygunner area and also parents of children attending St. Mary’s National School were waiting with bated breath yesterday (Tuesday) for the decision which was due from Waterford City Council.

But it was confirmed in the afternoon that further information was being requested from the club and also telecommunications company Meteor, which can be submitted over the next six months.

When it is received, the Council has a further month to make their decision.

A total of 23 objections have been received by the local authority against the application for retention which was submitted at the end of January in the name of the hurling club.

The mast has been operational on their lands since last August but only came to the attention of many locals a few weeks ago.

There’s huge disgruntlement in the Ballygunner areas as a result with many concerns specifically over possible health risks.

Among the objectors are the Parents’ Association at St. Mary’s National School which is right beside the club’s grounds, as well as its’ principal Michael White. A number of concerned parents met last Thursday night in the Woodlands Hotel to discuss the situation. It’s understood that as a result, a group met with Council planning officials on Friday to hammer home their views.

When the controversy first erupted, hurling club chairman Pat O’Sullivan, told the Waterford News & Star that the club could not go back on the deal as contracts had been signed with Meteor.

The week after, in a statement, the club said they’d been assured by Meteor that no health risks existed. They added that they would make a representative of the company available to talk to a delegation of residents/parents if they so wished.

PROTEST BRINGS DOWN MAST PLAN

WORRIED parents are celebrating after Orange withdrew its bid to site a mobile phone mast 150 metres from their children's school. But they warned the mobile phone operators that any attempt to find another site near Balcombe School will incur their wrath again.

Mum Nancy Towers said: "We know we have got to have these masts but not in built-up areas and next to children's schools. "It's fantastic that Orange has withdrawn this application but if they try to site another mast within 500m of the school or any residents we will oppose them." About 135 children attend Balcombe School in classrooms overlooking the London to Brighton railway line.

Orange applied to put a 12 metre high mast beside the line, 150 metres from the school's boundary and 250 metres from the buildings. On Monday it unexpectedly said it was withdrawing the application because of a "land ownership issue" but would be looking for another site in the "general vicinity". Mrs Towers, who collected signatures of 250 angry parents and residents, claimed children would be guinea pigs for the new technology. She highlighted evidence showing ill health in people living within 400 metres of masts. Balcombe Parish Council also opposed the mast, which adds to more than 10 already thought to be in the Balcombe area.

Orange insists the "radio frequency" technology used by its masts as well as phone handsets, is safe and similar to that used in others ways in the environment including in televisions.

Omega this is not true. See under:
http://omega.twoday.net/topics/Wissenschaft+zu+Mobilfunk/
http://omega.twoday.net/search?q=Cancer+Cluster
http://www.buergerwelle.de/body_science.html

Orange spokesperson Rebecca D'Arcy said Orange's existing masts in Balcombe did not cover the railway tunnel that the latest mast would serve due to tree density. The school was above the railway and unlikely to be affected. "We have to appreciate that in order to use mobile phone services there.
