This is government

The Liberty Papers
by tarran

She is being called Neda. The person who uploaded the video to Youtube claims that he was nearly half a mile away from the demonstrations when a sharpshooter shot a teenage girl standing nearby with her father. Within a few seconds, she was dead, her eyes turn to the camera before being obscured by the pools blood that pour out of her mouth and nose. Many people are arguing that this is the sort of thing that democracy is supposed to prevent. Of course, democracies also shoot people opposed to the government’s policies. Why? because government, at its heart, is an organization that uses force to get its way...

Silence isn’t golden

The American Spectator
by Philip Klein

06/19/09

Since a wave of protests broke out in Iran last weekend following its presidential election, the American media has promoted the Obama administration’s view that it could do more to help demonstrators by staying on the sidelines than actively offering rhetorical support. The theory is that if President Obama publicly encourages those taking to the streets in Iran, it will only backfire by allowing the Islamic regime to paint protesters as tools of America. As Obama himself put it, ’sometimes the United States can be a handy political football …’ But Amir Fakhravar says this approach is dead wrong. And he speaks with authority...

Iran: The Supreme Leader's Fatal Mistake

The grave error Khamenei committed was that he allowed himself to become a "part" in a moment of collective anger, especially when he said, "Some men are more capable of serving the country than others."

Mousavi Calls for Purge of "Lies"

Parisa Hafezi, Reuters: "Opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi said the Islamic Republic must be purged of what he called lies and dishonesty, sending out a direct challenge to conservative rulers after a day of unrest across Tehran. Helicopters criss-crossed the city and ambulance sirens wailed into the night after streets emptied of protesters who had defied Friday's stern warning from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei against further demonstrations."

Are You Ready For War With Demonized Iran?

By Paul Craig Roberts

How much attention do elections in Japan, India, Argentina, or any other country, get from the US media? How many Americans and American journalists even know who is in political office in other countries besides England, France, and Germany? Who can name the political leaders of Switzerland, Holland, Brazil, Japan, or even China? Yet, many know of Iran's President Ahmadinejad. The reason is obvious. He is daily demonized in the US media.

The Larger Context of the 2009 Iranian Elections

By Reza Fiyouzat

The presidential elections of June 12 were held within a theocratic system. In this system, in order to run for a political office, candidates must swear allegiance to the theocratic setup. From its inception, therefore, the theocracy has divided the entire population into two major political groups.

The Great, International, Demonic, Truly Frightening Iranian Threat

By William Blum

The fact that Obama says he's willing to "talk" to some of the "enemies" like Iran more than the Bush administration did sounds good: But one doesn't have to be too cynical to believe that it will not amount to more than a public relations gimmick.

War with Iran: Has it already begun?

AntiWar.Com
by Justin Raimondo

In public, when it comes to the Iranian question, President Obama is all sweet reason and kissy-face. His recent video message to the Iranian people was just what the doctor ordered. However, this public performance is severely undercut by an ongoing covert program aimed at regime-change in Tehran — or, at least, at undermining the Iranian regime to such an extent that it must respond in some way. This covert action program, reported by Seymour Hersh last year, was started by the Bush administration and funded to the tune of $400 million. The U.S. is, in effect, conducting a secret war against Tehran, a covert campaign aimed at recruiting Iran’s ethnic and religious minorities — who make up the majority of the population in certain regions, such as in the southeast borderlands near Pakistan — into a movement to topple the government in Tehran, or, at least, to create so much instability that U.S. intervention to ‘keep order’ in the region is justified...

Timeline Of a War Foretold

Bringing Iran In From the Cold

By Nader Mousavizadeh

A fateful consensus is forming around the proposition that war with Iran is inevitable. The failure of the past eight years' non-diplomacy has resulted in a worst-case scenario whereby Iran, most experts agree, has passed the point of no return in terms of technical nuclear weapons capability without violating its legal obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
